The sterling silver ring I bought turned black in the pool but it came off after a few days.

1st time to Amsterdam and this was one of the things we did — pre-arranged with our tour guide. Interesting to see and hear about the diamonds but not the way I wanted to spend my time in Amsterdam — unless you are there to buy they want to sell!

Coster Diamonds is one of the oldest still operating diamond polishing factories in Amsterdam, found in 1840. Free guided tour and you can see craftsmen at work. But it may not end up to be free if you purchase some of their diamond jewellery in the showroom at the end of the tour. That pair of Diamond tulips does look good on me!

Wait, this is where the free guided tours are, right? Total tourist trap! A guide takes you to the«museum,» or 3 or 4 stations that are interesting but not worth a whole visit. When it seems like you’re entering some diamond cutting world you’re guided into the extensive diamond selling area.

The Diamond Museum is located between the Van Gough and Rijksmuseum. We didn’t realize that this museum was one of the centers of diamond production and trade back to 17th century. It is so small that should be considered as an exhibit rather than a museum. It is a self guided tour, they charge 6 Euros for adults, 4 Euros for over 65 and teenagers, and no charge for children under 12. They play a low profile selling the tickets to the Van Gough and Rijksmuseum. Unfortunately, we have already visited the Van Gough and waited over an hour to get in; but we were able to purchase the tickets for the Rijksmuseum and benefited by passing everyone who was waiting in line and went directly to the museum, showed our tickets and we were in, what a blessing.

I’m eternally grateful to this place since it is where I purchased my tickets for the Rijksmuseum so it saved me a lot of time. But when I returned to do a self-guided tour of the museum, it didn’t overly impress me. It is pretty hard for anything to follow the Rijksmuseum. There are a few fun museum pieces and of course one level dedicated to shopping if you are in the market for diamonds(watches, jewelry, etc.). Would I put this on the top of my tourist list in Amsterdam? No. But it is free and located between the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum, so not a bad diversion if you are in the area. I’m not really a diamond girl anyway. I preferred shopping at the smaller boutiques and markets when I was in Amsterdam.
