Of all my years and miles of traveling, this place is, without a doubt, my favorite local find. On a recent trip to Amsterdam, my friend and I arrived pretty late to the city. We stayed at a great apartment I found on AirBnB. Tired, jet lagged, but excited, we decided to get one beer before we called it a night. I noticed a little sign about 50 meters from the apartment. We popped in for a drink. Wow. What a place. Small, simple, inviting, and tons of old world charm that was authentic! They didn’t remodel the place to look charming; it was oozing with charm from its bones. It’s a pretty small place, which forced conversation with everyone inside. We got our first beer. Something I had never heard of before, and don’t know now what it was called. It was delightful. We started chatting with some of the other patrons, all locals, and we were quickly off to a late night out. The locals gave us some amazing recommendations for other bars and restaurants they insisted we be sure to check out. One beer turned into five, and before we knew it, we had been there for a couple of hours. We were in Amsterdam for 5 days total, and went in here every night for one last drink(or three). Honestly, this bar is a place I will never forget, and next time I am in Amsterdam, I am coming here!

I am reluctant to review this pub as it is a gem and I don’t want it to be overcrowded, but here it goes. It is such a great find! Really lovely patron, extremely knowleageable of wine. We all had a different kind of red and it was sublime. We met for our weekly bookgroup and it was lovely and cozy. Like a pub should be. They have a very limited card, which is fine. We had the cheese blocks and it melted in your mouth. My new favourite go to place to snuggle in the corner with a good glas of merlot and a book.

This is the café we popped into to celebrate our engagement to be married mainly because it was close and open. As local a bar as you will find in Amsterdam. We enjoyed the jenever, beer and atmosphere. Typically Dutch in that initially our reception was cold and indifferent. However, don’t take this personally. It’s just the way they are. If you are looking for a place to chill in the centrum check it out. It ain’t fancy but it does have character.

I have such a hard time figuring out what a café where you can get a cup of coffee is, what a café you can get a beer at is and what a café where you can buy a joint is. Where I’m from, the distinctions are much more clear haha. Anyways, I went here looking for a place to go for a coffee on a cold, rainy afternoon and I think I might have chosen somewhere a little better suited to a biertje. They did serve coffee, but I think I was breaking the Dutch rule of nothing non-alcoholic after 4pm… felt a bit out of place and it also seemed like the sort of place that get’s busy later in the day. It’s an old, «dive» bar tucked away and I imagine it is mostly a local crowd. I will be sure to go back when I’m in the mood for something stronger than a coffee. ALSO, they have a live-in cat, which I think is great(very Dutch). It was having a nap on the window sill right by us while we were enjoying our coffees.
