Café de Jaren

My favorite spot in Amsterdam for years! Go here! Get the salad bar, soup, sandwiches, the lasagna was great as well.

One of those places that I keep being drawn to for it’s ambiance and ‘loose fit’. Don’t expect the best of food or drinks, yet a great place to enjoy each others company while having a lovely meal for a reasonable price. Staff is nice and the place is vibrant.
I find their lasagna very jummy!

I too found this place in a guidebook. The interior is nice, the patio is super big the views are spectacular! Service is a little slow, but the folks working were nice. Great beer selection. Come of the beer, get food elsewhere.

Overheated, poor service, overpriced mediocre food. Found this place in a guidebook, checked it out on Unilocal,read the menus head of time, and very disappointed.

There is lots of seating here and seems to be a popular place for locals rather than tourists. The food is decent but the waitress I had was very scatter-​brained. The interior is well kept and allows plenty of natural light (which I love). However, the patio on the water is definitely the highlight of this place.

The place is located perfectly in the center, but slightly hidden from the main crowd, making it accessible only for those who know or read about it.
It has a great terrace by the water and actually you can even cone to that terrace by the boat and park it there:)
It’s nice atmosphere inside. There id’s a café on the first floor and restaurant on the second.

If you are up for beers by the water — great location. Go for it!
If you want to accompany it with some taste — café won’t cut it:(couple of years ago they used to have a different menu, better:(

Lovely view of the Amstel river and is part of a hotel as well. Nice looking both inside and out and they have patios on the ground floor as well as the first for you to sit outside. I would recommend the outside space for the views. We had salads and the orange smoothie– made with the sour milk– all delicious and very fresh food. Service is a little slow but on a warm summer day time doesnt really matter :) they also have a salad bar which is self service for parties that would like to wrap up quicker.

No better location for The King’s Day lunch than Café de Jaren’s terrace! Such a lovely place with the canals.

We had a dinner for 36 in the private upstairs dining room. Execution, taste and service was excellent, typical good Dutch hospitality. Über-​spacious, attractive first floor, great for business meeting or tea with a friend.

Awesome terrace with a beautiful view on the Amsterdam cannels. I had a nice prosecco and a delicious home made humus ciabatta.

Friendly staff who accommodated my large party, two terraces overlooking the canal, indoor tables where you can read the newspaper. Definitely going back!

We just had coffee, so I can’t say much on the food.
Service was inefficient and absent at best, but also, it’s fair to say, very friendly. Sadly, as in many places in Amsterdam, the servers are more preoccupied with trying to understand their fancy electronic order pads than with actually doing their job (waiting tables). Another anonymous member of staff then brings your order, which in our case led to another table getting our drinks because of a human error. Ridiculous!
The interior is very nice, the tables by the water are a perfect place to have a drink: 3 stars for the location, they’ll get 2 extra stars when they hire actual waiters.

Lors de mon court séjours à Amsterdam, j’ai eu la chance de tomber par hasard sur ce lieu stylisé et très abordable. En bas, on retrouve le fameux Café de Jaren, qui propose des petits plats simples mais tout de même très bons (j’ai testé le toast au chèvre et au miel, un petit délice à 7 euros), à manger à l’intérieur ou en terrasse au bord du canal. A tester la nuit de préférence, l’ambiance avec les lumières est vraiment top !
A l’étage, il y a également un vrai restaurant, avec des plats un peu plus élaborés et du coup un peu plus chers… Mais je n’ai pas malheuresement pas eu l’occasion de l’essayer. Ce sera pour la prochaine fois !

Apparently everybody’s favourite place to take a first date or out-​of-​town guests. You won’t be original, but you won’t regret it either — great views and a distinctive space.

So much space OMG !! Great to be in a place where no one is ease dropping ! That’s how spacious it is !!
The service was amazingly good considering the place was full!!! Now that does not happen often in Amsterdam!!!

Das Highlight ist sicherlich der Steg auf der anderen Seite des Eingangs, man sitzt direkt am Wasser und kann sich abkühlen. Der Preis für das Witbier (3,75 Eur /​0,33l) ist jedoch sehr teuer, dafür hat mich das Café nicht wirklich umgehauen. Da gibts andere

Tolle Location, aufmerksamer Service und gutes Speisen-​/​Essensangebot.

Sehr schönes Kaffee ungewöhnlich großzügig für Amsterdamer Verhältnisse.

I don’t get the hype about this place at all. The views are great, if the weather is good, otherwise you’re confined to the indoor area, which is just terrible. There is not enough sound proofing and the tables are very close together, even for a place this huge.
Service is your typical Dutch, which equates to getting served at the server’s whim.
In terms of dining, they have a better than average salad bar. There are also your staple snacks on the menu.
The area downstairs has a longish table where you can typically see people reading stuff or working on laptops, which is a feat in itself considering how sound just seems to reverberate inside.
There are many great spots in Amsterdam to get drinks and enjoy company, and this is just not one on the top list. It’s great for a once in a while hangout with a large group, though.

Though it tends to be overcrowded and a bit loud with families with kids etc, it’s a good spot for a coffee-​cake break, right in the centre of the city. I love the terrace by the water on a sunny day, it’s just very very difficult to get a table there though.
Try the apple pie.

Big spacious café that is very classy but still low-​key. Many seats inside (also upstairs!) and all kinds of drinks and bites. Come here for coffee, lunch, dinner or just drinks. I usually come here to have drinks and hangout after/​before watching a movie at Pathe. Also a nice spot for having drinks after shopping.
If it is nice weather you should definitely sit on there beautiful canal side terrace with amazing view.

Een heel leuk café met een gezellige sfeer, WLAN beschikbaar. In de zomer is het op het terras direct aan de Amstel een droom.

I came here for the canal views in the back, and was not disappointed. You can sit right up against the water, watching small canal boats drift by against the backdrop of some pretty amazing buildings. There’s also a fairly large interior too if the weather isn’t cooperative — I was surprised actually with how much seating there was.
The food isn’t too shabby either. I ordered kind of an omelet-​like thing with eggs, ham, and cheese, and while it was on the salty side it was still really good.

You’re looking for something somewhat upper-​scale (read: not a gezellig dive). You want lots of seating options, a view of some water and you want the staff to be not only well put together and lovely, but also with personality and kindness.
Where do you go? Here. Done. End of story.
Tonight I ordered the Irish coffee and man… where on earth did they get the whipped cream from? It was thick, smooth, delicious.
I have yet to have a nibble here, but the atmosphere is clean, hustling and spacious. Comfortable. I’d return — especially during the warmer months when the outdoor seating on the water is available.

I’ve had lunch here twice, soup each time, and the food was decent both times. Nothing spectacular, and don’t expect the environment to be gezellig/​cozy, ’cause it’s not. What’s great about this stop is the easy, central location and the outdoor seating (at the back of the restaurant). I can imagine that sitting on the canal on a warm summer evening and having a witte wijn is nice. So… maybe next year!
Also, they have a few communal tables in the center of the restaurant that are nice for a group meeting — in case you’re looking for a place to have drinks and food while working.

mein lieblingscafe hier in amsterdam. vor etlichen jahren per zufall entdeckt und heute wiedergefunden. wiedersehen macht freude und dieses wohlige gefühl stellte sich ein. service sind studenten. aber schnell und freundlich. preise fair. atmosphäre durch die hohen decken und vor allem den gekachelten boden etwas kühl. aber abends wird das licht gedimmt und irgendwie wirds dann sehr gemütlich. es gibt eine lesebank. gross und genug platz um in ruhe zeitung zu lesen oder am notebook was zu arbeiten. publikum angenehm. viele lokale und eher weniger touris. bei schönem wetter auch super zum draussensitzen. zu einem fünften stern reichts noch nicht. dafür ist die karte etwas zu klein (ok ist halt nur ein café). aber sehr sehr gute 4 sterne. leute hingehen und selber testen!

Come for the canal-​side outdoor seating and spectacular view. Stay for the delightful sandwiches and reinvigorating coffee.
The biggest draw here is definitely the back patio with ample seating, relaxed and casual ambiance, and an unobstructed view across the Amstel canal. Well, to be fair, our view was partially blocked by a boat tied up to the dock literally next to our table, until the owners of the craft untied and sped off across the water halfway through our meal.
I’m reasonably certain the breads on the menu are all fail-​proof. We had a ham, egg, and cheese (somewhat like an omelette) with multigrain on the side, as well as a meatball sandwich on brown bread with a side of tasty house sweet chilli sauce. We weren’t quite sure how to make best use of the sauce — does one pour it over the sandwich? I ended up deconstructing the whole thing, dipping the meatballs into the sauce, then having bites of buttered bread in between nibbles of protein. It got the job done!
Between the convenient location, lovely outdoor atmosphere, and affordable snacks, Café de Jaren is a welcome getaway from the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam’s city centre.

eigentlich mein lieblingsladen in amsterdam, misch aus museumscafe, großzügigem studententreff, touricafe und zum abhängen für durchaus nicht uncoole eingeborene 25 – 45. bei schönem wetter coole terrase draussen direkt am wasser.
das einzige was ich mr noch wünschen würde: mehr internationale presse, vlcht sogar mal né süddeutsche? ;) das fänd ich sexxy!

Sehr nettes Café, in dem ich zu Studentenzeiten sehr oft war. Groß, hell, direkt am Fleet mit toller Aussicht. Sobald die Sonne rauskommt, wird auch draußen die Terrasse genutzt. Es gibt sehr viele Zeitschriften zum Lesen und zu Stoßzeiten wird er hier sehr voll. Die Decken sind hoch und es gibt viele Sitzmöglichkeiten, oben gibt es noch ein Restaurant. Das De Jaren ist fast direkt am Muntplein gelegen und damit recht zentral vom Dam zu erreichen. Zu essen gibt es Hollandtypische Speisen. Broodjes (belegte Brote warum oder kalt), Suppen, Kuchen (vor allem die Appeltart ist sehr zu empfehlen!). Ich trinke immer frischen Minztee. Die Preise sind im Vergleich zu Deutschland recht ordentlich. Das Stück Apfelkuchen für 4,50 Euro ist etwas überteuert, aber hier zahlt man es gerne für die Aussicht und die Atmosphäre.

Mitten im Zentrum von Amsterdam liegt dieses große Café, welches sowohl eine Terrasse unten am Wasser, wie aber auch einen großen Balkon mit Sicht aufs Wasser hat. Die Karte biete eine große Auswahl (Salat, Kuchen, Smoothies, etc). Da die Terrasse und der Balkon nach hinten rausgehen zum Wasser, hat man hier eine kleine, ruhige Oase, in der man sich am liebsten stundenlang aufhalten würde!

Hier sind viele Amsterdamer anzutreffen — immer ein gutes Zeichen. Man kann wunderbar dort zeitungslesend den Sonntagnachmittag verbringen oder den Stadtbummel mit einer Pause unterbrechen.
Leckere kleine Snacks, Kaffee oder Weinschorle… was das Herz begehrt. Dazu wunderschönes Ambiente und eine schöné Aussicht auf die Amstel.

Die warme Apfeltaart (siehe Foto) ist der Ober-​Hammer. Das Stück kostet 5,50EUR, ist aber sehr groß!
Der Koffee verkeerd dort ist wohl von Illy und wird in sehr kleinen Gläsern serviert. Könnte also besser sein.
Unbedingt versuchen, ein Platz oben am Fenster zu bekommen. Schöné Aussicht auf die Stadt!

Modern, light, amazing and central location. Lovely place to go and choose if you want to meet new people, talkt to your own friends or read the papers of the day on your own, sipping some coffee or tea…

Um es vorweg zu nehmen: Wer in Amsterdam war und nicht das Café de Jaren besucht hat, der hat etwas verpasst.
Hier kann man sowohl Frühstück als auch Abendbrot zu recht guten Preisen (zumindest für Amsterdam) genießen. Die Terrasse direkt am Wasser bietet einen malerischen Blick, die Kellner sind durchweg freundlich und zuvorkommend, die Portionen sind ordentlich. Es gibt schlichtweg kaum etwas auszusetzen.
Einziger Kritikpunkt is die geringe Auswahl an Hauptspeisen. Auf der Terrasse kann man abends nur zwischen 4 warmen Haupgerichten wählen, was aber nicht so schlimm ist, weil es erstens auch noch genug wohlschmeckende Snacks gibt und zweitens diese 4 Gerichte durchweg empfehlenswert sind. Außerdem gibt es zu jedem Hauptgericht einen Salad vom Buffet und einen Teller mit Brot und Butter sodass man garantiert nicht hungrig das Café de Jaren verlässt.
Alles in allem uneingeschränkt empfelenswert, zumindest wenn man auf der Terrasse sitzt. Zum Rest kann ich nichts sagen, weil wir immer draussen saßen.

Man sitzt schön und hat viel zu schauen, alles ist sehr entspannt! Das Baguette mit Humus war göttlich!

Wie schon im englischen Beitrag geschrieben — das Café ist eines der sehr bekannten in Amsterdam. Daher auch immer sehr gut besucht. Man kann hier wunderbar seine Zeit verbringen, im Sommer — wenn Platz ist (leider eher selten der Fall) — auch auf der Terrasse direkt an der Amstel.
Das modern eingerichtete Café verteilt sich auf zwei Ebenen, wobei die untere Ebene Café und Bar ist, die obere Restaurant. Das Essen, sowohl im Restaurant, als auch die Sandwiches im Café, ist ausgesprochen lecker. Die zwei einzigen Minuspünktchen sind, dass die Bedienung ihre Servicezeiten manchmal etwas arg genau nimmt, sowie der recht hohe Geräuschpegel im Café.

On se sent dépaysé, voire transporté dans une autre époque, c’est un café qui a une âme et une histoire. Je conseillerais à tous ceux qui cherchent à voir autre chose que les bars modernes et finalement assez impersonnels.

Bar sympa, la musique est bonne. Les prix sont très attractifs quand on vient de France c’est de la folie, de quoi passer une soirée bien arrosée. Point faible, en début de soirée l’ambiance est un froid, si vous voulez dancer allez y a partir de 00h ! mais attention toutefois, à cette heure ci les places assises se font rares !

Y aller d’urgence
Je recommande chaudement ce restaurant-​bar. La déco est magnifique. Elle est faite pas Onno de Vries, le Philippe Starck national. C’est très épuré. Il y a beaucoup de place. Le café possède une magnifique terrasse donnant sur l’Amstel. C’est très agréable. Contrairement à ce que l’on pourrait penser en rentrant dans l’établissement, les prix sont très très doux. Et en plus c’est délicieux !

Un jardin à la Hollandaise
De Jaren c’est un peu comme le Beaubourg ou le Marly, mais en plus open. Clientèle internationale et branchitude locale se mêlent joyeusement autour d’un verre. Dès que le soleil pointe son nez, c’est la ruée vers la terrasse extérieure avec vue sur l’Amstel, un vrai bonheur!
