Love this salon! I have been going here for about a year now and honestly my hair has never looked so good. Yes it can be a bit nerve wracking not having a mirror in front of you but it’s a nice surprise to see the final product. I personally always go to Lee. He moved at the same time as me from tony and guy to bubble kid. He is great and always makes you feel beautiful. I highly suggest this hair salon!

After reading reviews, I tried to make an appointment with Simon but it didn’t work out so I had my haircut by Lee. Lee was really nice and funny. The salon does not have mirrors at each chair, which I would have preferred a mirror. My hair isn’t exactly what I had in mind and shorter than we discussed. It is also uneven. One chunk of hair on the left side is 1″ longer. Not sure how I didn’t see it while I was there.

Laura is a great! She understood exactly what I wanted to do with my hair color, and was very realistic with the outcome(I had half brunette half turquoise hair, with natural, bleached and coloured bits, and wanted to go back to copper/auburn). I loved the result! But unfortunately my experience with the other hairdressers, responsible for the haircut itself, wasn’t nearly as good. I was scheduled to cut my hair with Janelle; before we started with the color she asked me what I wanted, and already chopped off a chunk of the hair to make Laura’s work easier(and avoid product waste as well). So far, so good. But then the colour took longer then expected so I had to be transferred to Anton, and everything went downhill from there. He basically just asked Janelle what he was supposed to do with my hair, instead of talking to me directly and trying to understand what I expected. He didn’t listen to my instructions at all, so I ended up with a completely straight-cut hair(which increases the volume of my hair by a million times), shorter than I asked for, and with no layering whatsoever(again: all things I had asked for). I thought it would get better after I went home and styled it my way or gave it a week to grow on me, but it just got worse. This haircut would turn out just fine for a dutch lady with thin hair that has no volume, but that’s not my case — although my hair is thin, it’s basically a mane when it comes to texture and volume. In the end, I went back to Mel Kane at Wild Romance so she could fix this mess up — and she did an AMAZING job with such limited options. And that’s why I’m only giving Bubblekid 2 stars: although Laura’s job was great(btw it was complimented twice while I was at Wild Romance, so kudos for that!), the overall experience wasn’t satisfactory. I honestly don’t even think I could go back to redo my colour with Laura because of it all, which is a pity. Also the no-mirrors thing is quite unsettling. It was exciting at first, but when it came down to the haircut I kinda wished I could see what was going on to give the guy some directions. After all, it doesn’t matter how good a hairdresser you are: nobody knows our hair better than ourselves, right? I’m aware rating hairdressers is a very very subjective matter(and I bet a lot of people had better outcomes) but I wanted to share my experience as well.

A great hairdressing friend of mine(who has sadly left this city) recommended this store to me. She specifically recommended Simon to cut my hair and his other half, Laura to colour it. Best. Recommendation. Ever. The pair of them know what they’re doing! They’re great with suggestions AND they listen to you! But it’s not just these guys, whilst I was in my chair getting my hair did, I saw many customers walk in and out happily– the hairdressers here know what they’re doing. Bubblekid currently have two stores, but my local is the one in De Pijp(next door to Omelegg, yum). These guys also stock Kevin Murphy products, which whilst pricey are definitely worth the splurge! The service isn’t always 100% when you’re in store without an appointment(the shop is huge, great for browsing the ‘Things I Like, Things I Love’ clothing line and other wares on display), you’ll need to book so you’re not wondering around aimlessly when they’re busy busy busy or expect to be a little bit patient! It’s definitely worth it!

I found Bubblekid couple years ago when living down the street in De Pijp. I now live the other side of Amsterdam but make the long trip anyway. It’s a great vibe, friendly people and of course most importantly the best cut I’ve gotten in Amsterdam.
