Takes me back to my year in Japan. Kimonoed waitress, polite and gentle serving delicate, delicious flavours. Cosy and quite dining room shuts out the world beyond. Lunch is a bargain at $ 20 for casual and $ 28 for deluxe lunch. Great place to catch up with a good friend, traditional but excellent Japanese food… Possibly Aucklands best!

Tatsumi is a modern and chic Japanese restaurant found in the heart of Newmarket. I would have to say its one of the nicer Japanese restaurants in the Auckland precinct with a modern, upmarket interior. Ordering tapas style as per usual we were surprised to an amuse bouche before our meal was served; A small selection of Japanese bites that were all full of flavour. The sushi was rolled beautifully, maybe not as creatively displayed as other Japanese restaurants, but extremely fresh, which is what you are always looking for in sushi. I’m a sucker for soft shell crab, we agreed the tempura was perfectly balanced, with a light and crispy texture — also on the veges too. We love sashimi, but we love salmon more, I would recommend ordering it as its cut to perfection and again very fresh. At the end of the meal we were served a complimentary dessert — mango pudding. Not my cup of tea personally but im not a fan of Asian desserts to be fair. Overall the service was friendly and they go out of their way with personal touches that are unexpected. Several years on and this is still my favourite Japanese restaurant either here in Auckland or in the US. Not only is the food of the highest calibre and the service way above par, but they continue to be inventive and daring with their combinations and never fail to deliver on their promise of an incredible dining experience. It is a monthly visit for me and my family and always is our go to place for special occasions. And it also helps that the owners are some of the nicest people you will ever meet.

Tatsumi is definitely one of the best Japanese restaurants around Auckland. It’s barely visible from the outside so it was a little tricky to find the first two times. Food is great, but portions are small, so be prepared to get spendy with ordering sides to make sure you are well-fed. Their desserts are a MUST! The décor is great, I loved the atmosphere. The staff are amazing, last time I went, the waiter was japanese and spoke fluent mandarin which impressed me.

I love this Japanese restaurant, everything about Tatsumi is wonderful. The owners Yoko and Koichi moved to Auckland from Christchurch after the earthquake bringing a unique dining experience to Newmarket, this is one of my favourite restaurants in Auckland, I think also the best dining experience in Newmarket. The food is a fusion of European and Japanese flavours creating incredible dishes, the result of Koichi ‘s 17 years of being a chef in top restaurants in both Japan and New Zealand. Even if someone is not a big fan of Japanese food there would be something on the menu for them. The service is beyond reproach, the staff are so lovely and are really accommodating. As a vegan ordering is often problematic but here I am able to order off the menu. They remember you too and even the complementary dish that comes before your main, they bring me a vegan one, usually the sesame beans with crushed peanuts. One of the unique things about Tatsumi is their original cocktails which are based on the Chinese zodiac. A wonderful selection of wines, Japanese sake, beers and other spirits are also available. Additionally there is a great non alcoholic drinks menu, I highly recommend the Heron’s Flight grape juice. The food here is fabulous and earth element themed interiors add to the tranquility. Tatsumi really is one of the best dining experiences you can have in Auckland, one you’ll keep going back to.
