Calling a pub«Stout» seems a little too meta for me. Especially this place, which is a proper pub, and doesn’t seem to have an goals loftier than getting people drunk in friendly surroundings. Still, if you get the drunk part right, you can your bar whatever you want! Stout is also a good spot for lunch. The carvery is meat-and-potatoes stuff(literally), but it’s cheap and it hits the spot. The beer garden/smoking area is great in the summer, but a little bit too exposed in the winter. But they make up for it by having a big open fireplace in the back!

Whilst the majority of the city were out in the city centre for the Pride festivities I was consumed with non fun stuff and when I got free from the non fun stuff the drunken phone calls from the city centre began, ‘Come parrrtttyyyy b*tch’ The idea of binge drinking never really appeals to me because I am old. So I popped in here to watch the football and have a sandwich and a pint of Guinness. I saddled up on the bar stool beside the others which were old men and boy did we parrrrttttyyyy — indeed. The cool thing they are running there at the moment is if you guess the score of the game correctly you get 2 free drinks — nice.

Hanging out in bars in Rathmines is something I have not done for quiet some time so on a Sunday afternoon when a group of friends suggested The Stout I jumped at the chance. I didn’t really have any expectation for the bar choice as I was just happy to be hanging out in the area. I did however enjoy it there. It has a nice layout with a beer garden which would be a welcome on a sunny, summer’s day. It serves pub grub, which I didn’t have, but it looks edible and people in the bar who were eating did seem to enjoy it. My big plus for this place is the very friendly and attentive bar staff and the free wi-fi.

This would not be my favourite drinking venue in Rathmines, but I do like to come here to watch the match. It’s a spacious and neutral football-friendly bar with a large and fairly priced bistro menu, enough tables for everyone and TVs on the walls for sports enthusiasts. Attracting a very mixed crowd, expect to see drunken Arsenal fans sitting next to elderly ladies enjoying their Sunday tea. I’ll give them an extra star for the heated beer-garden.

I still remember this as the Rathmines Inn, but now after its facelift it’s the Stout Bar. Well, they still have the nice beer garden and even more big screens. The Munster Supporters Club used the Stout Bar as their official pub in Dublin for a while but we won’t hold that against the pub. It’s a nice, regular pub where the bartenders draw a good pint and the staff are very friendly in general. One big drawing point was always the beer garden during the summer but it’s equally nice for a few quiet ones to start off a night out. It’s a nice local but nothing special.

The now extremely oddly named Stout Bar used to be my Monday afternoon hang out as dewy eyed freshmen of the DIT. If we put the unusual name aside the rest of the bar is also quite odd a mixture of contemporary bar and traditional pub. I suppose they were trying to hit all corners of the market. I can’t say it doesn’t work. I like the neon down-lighting on the old hardwood counters and the other odd little non sequiturs of design are a lot of fun. Generally, the atmosphere is fun and relaxed, so far as I remember the pints are good, and it’s a great place to hang out for an afternoon. I can’t say that I would trek here from afar but I would definitely drop in if were in the area.

Previously the Rathmines Inn, the Stout Bar is the result of this pub’s make-over. It’s had a lick of paint outside, a bit of a once over inside and they’ve got new plans and lots of things happening. I used to go here anyway when it was the Rathmines Inn for lunch every now and then — I thought it was good. It’s still good, just a little different. The bar staff are still very friendly and recognise the regulars. They’ve added more plasma screens just in time for the beginning of the soccer season so I guess they’re hoping to pull the crowds. They also have an after-work barbecue(also on Sundays) for € 10 which is great. This will definitely work to try to keep summer alive. Match on a Wednesday evening and a burger on the side. Good call.
