I miss this place. Good pints of Guiness, good music, laid back vibe when it wasn’t too crowded. Friendly people for the most part(apart from the the one time i saw a guy violently kick the bathroom door in). Played a big role in how I met my girlfriend.

Clearly this place has closed & the other dreadful place that took its place has also closed w/in about 30 days of opening. Honestly, I’m not sure what the hoo-haw was about this place? Every time we went here, it was SO packed & we could never sit(even on a Sun/Mon night) & all filled w/regulars. I guess the gaelic name stands for«locals living room» in english? How they couldn’t stay open w/the amount of traffic is beyond me. Inclusive of increased rent, prices can go up, but perhaps they didn’t want to go w/it anymore or people who frequented here were too frugal to deal. Stay away from the chinese place next door btw, it’s never busy for a reason… atrocious. Sounds like this place has been reborn where«Toast» is(something like Sun-Thu), «Toast of the Nog» is the name apparently. I’ve renamed it «Toast of the Nob Job». I have a hunch they put a Starbucks in this place, you know — because there are clearly not enough places to hang out & not pay anything in Union w/free wifi? Besides, if you actually have to cross the street to pay $ 5 for a cup of «burnt-ass» tasting coffee, then you have to walk too far & there’s is most definitely a market for a Schtarbucks. Man that place is so annoying — I guess I just don’t get it? Now GETOUTTAMYVENTIYARD!!!

The nOg is closing at the end of this month, be sure to stop in while you still can. This pub will certainly be missed! On edit — the nOg has been given a stay of execution until February 28th, so get over there and get your pints on before it’s too late!

All throughout the literatures of all peoples are stories of places where one may live young for all time, blissfully removed from the rest of the world and free from care or want. Tir na nOg — literally«Land of Youth» — is just such a place. But as happens in all of those stories, its denizens must face the brutal truth that no one may forever elude time’s ravages. The nOg, you see, will close at the end of March, 2007. The nOg is loud, it is crowded, and everybody’s had one too many. No one makes any claims to the contrary, and they welcome you to join in with open arms. The music, like the crowd, is usually boisterous, with lots of regular acts who know the customers by name and have everyone raising a glass. You will probably find yourself making some friends over a pint or three if you stay for any length of time. The nOg is the heart and the soul of Union Square. Like the square it is seemingly unassuming but not so at all, much friendlier than most, and quite happy to be what it is. And while everything I usually eat there is liquid, the food is top-notch pub fare, occasionally cooked by special guest chefs. Perhaps it is necessary that this, the soul of the old, be excised in order that the new may proceed, as it inevitably will. Without it, though, this new Union Square will be a little bit colder, a lot more sober, and sadly, missing its fountain of youth. Godspeed, old friend.

Some of the worst food I’ve had anywhere. I ordered the fish and chips and my husband ordered steak tips, rare. After waiting for ages, everything came out burnt. Burnt fish, burnt chips, well-done(burnt) steak tips. I picked at the fish and chips anyway, because we had been waiting so long already and I was very hungry, but my husband asked for a do-over on the steak tips. 15 minutes later, he had to tell them to take them off the grill, and they were a solid medium well at that point. Maybe the food is better when the guest chefs are there, but we aren’t about to go back to find out. Nothing wrong with the beer, and the atmosphere is fine. But if you’re hungry, go to Sally O’Brians across the street for actual pub food.

I love the Nog! It’s pretty small, though, so if you want to have a seat while watching the fantastic Eilen Jewell Band, better get there before they start playing, as there are few good places to stand once the seating fills up. The Nog is my favorite place to hang out on a lazy Saturday afternoon/evening. The atmosphere is friendly, warm, and authentic.

This place and The Plough & Stars are the two best bars in the Boston area to catch good live music for little to no cost. I believe Tir Na Nog is one of the last places you’ll find no cover at all. They play your jazz, blues and other traditional types of music here and the bands are all your seasoned professionals who know how to entertain. As an added bonus you have above average beers and food here too. What more could you ask for? A pool table? Not in Boston. But you do have the chance to order a fried Milky Way. Yes. Now I haven’t actually had one of these but I did get to watch it be made. They take a frozen Milky Way, dip it in a batter that has booze added to it, and drop in in the fryer. The batter smelled like a nectar of the gods and I also noted that it was highly praised upon consumption. I can vouch for the greatness of they’re burgers and beer though. Highest honors!

Tir Na Nog was recommended to me late on a Sunday night… I think I will have a slightly skewed impression of it seen as how it was quite dead. The patrons and bartender were super nice, though, and I found myself to be comfortable enough to stay there for at least a couple of hours by myself! And I give the bartender 5 stars(forgotten his name, unfortunately). Drink prices seemed to be about average. I’d probably hang out here if I lived nearby.

One of the very few authentic Irish bars in the Boston area. Great beer on tap, no bs, just good people and good times. The live music on Sundays has one of the best fiddlers I have ever seen. One of the places to be on the night of St. Patty’s.

When, oh when, is Union Square going to catch up with the rest of the burgeoning Somerville squares? Hopefully this little joint will help it out a little. Great place to hear live music. There are often babies and children in there, and almost always a dog or two. That kind of thing.

Super fun but small Irish pub in Union Square. Live music keeps you tapping your foot. One of my favorite pubs.
