It seems like it would be hard to mess up pie, but they manage it. I have tried to like this place several times but it never works out. Often times the pie filling will be completely tasteless and without salt while the crust is so salty that it burns my lips. Other times all I can taste is burnt butter. I don’t think I have any more tries left in me.

Mississippi mud pie of the month enticed me into the shop. And then when I saw the peach had just come out of the oven, well, I took it as a sign. Generally not a fan of fruit or berry pies, I thought the hot peach pie was perfect. Mississippi mud pie disappeared after 3 hours in the fridge, with no terrorist organization claiming responsibility. However, a sheepish housemate assured me that the cat who«probably ate it» thought it was incredible. Last time I was in town, I had the Shoofly peanut butter pie, which was pretty incredible. Hope to be back in the area on a Friday, so I can see if the coconut cream pie stacks up to Dahlia’s.

As a pie enthusiast I was obligated to try out Shoofly Pie Co. while I was in town. I tried a piece of their namesake Shoofly pie. It was good, but a bit too sweet for my taste. Their fruit pies looked amazing — though I didn’t get to try any. I also had a piece of their broccoli cheese quiche, which was excellent. Finally I took one of their caramelized onion galettes, which was quite good as well. All in all it was definitely worth a visit.

My husband and I have eaten at Shoofly off and on for several years(even before moving permanently to West Seattle) and unfortunately the quality has deteriorated. The pies are still decent, but the ratio of filling to whipped cream has become ridiculous. I recently ordered a piece of coconut cream, and at its *deepest* point the coconut filling was less than one inch thick(yes, I measured.) There was over two inches of whipped cream… yuck. His chocolate cream slice was similar. Sadly, this was not an isolated experience; over the past eight months or so, we’ve tried again several times, and each time, we had the same problem. It’s a real shame. Their pies used to be the very good.

The pies are good, don’t get me wrong. I’m not going to go all pie snob on this place and criticize the granularity of an ingredient or what not, they were solid pies. Pies make me feel good and they succeeded in that department. What makes this place stand out was the staff. There was a positive atmosphere here and they had a good vibe going. I guess, how could you not, you have pies around you all day! Hell, they even gave me a little extra pie. No complaints here.

We ordered 4 pies($ 92 and change) for a party last weekend and they were really disappointing. I’ve been in before for slices and was happy so I’m not sure what happened this time. The coconut cream pie was grainy rather than smooth, the key lime pie wasn’t creamy enough and had a weird metallic aftertaste, and the Shoofly pie tasted oddly eggy. We also ordered a blackberry pie but I didn’t taste that one. At the end of the night, the pies were barely touched because word got around that they weren’t good. Totally embarrassing and so sad for the birthday girl!!!

The husband and I shared two pieces: black raspberry and chocolate cream. The chocolate cream was SO disappointing!!! This is the one we wanted the most, but it was very sad. There was about 3 inches of whipped cream, and half an inch of chocolate cream — no joke. When we dug out the chocolate cream on its own, it was very tasty, but we only had a few bites of chocolate, the rest was whipped cream(good, but boring). And, the crust had gone soggy under the chocolate cream. The black raspberry was good, and partially made up for our disappointment with the other one. The black raspberry filling was really good — sweet with just a little tart. The crust okay, but nothing to write home about. The girl working was friendly enough. The shop itself was kind of cute, but freezing inside. It wasn’t awful, but we probably won’t go back when there are other pie and pastry shops that are much better.

I suggested meeting a date here(she loves pie) and when she told me she really wanted to check it out, I knew I had made a great choice. The shop itself is cute, small but adorably so. It got really hot inside though, I found myself starting to sweat just from sitting there. The service wasn’t bad, fairly welcoming and friendly. On to the pie. We ordered 4 slices. Yes, 4 slices. I opted for the shoofly(how could I not get the signature?) and the chocolate cream. I was really disappointed that they didn’t have banana cream(she said it’s a special order). Date ordered the apple crumble and black raspberry. The shoofly wasn’t bad, it’s not something I would order again. It was rich and had a browned molasses taste to it. I had it warmed but without ice cream, maybe that would have made it better? I didn’t like it that much. I also didn’t like how the crust was so thin, puff pastry like. Date liked the shoofly though. The chocolate cream was rich and ever the chocolate experience. That whipped cream on top was delicious, a little more dense than a regular whipped cream. The crust on this was also very thin. I had a bite of the black raspberry and it was really tart, I’m not a fan of tart. The crust looked really tough on it too(it was a nice color). The apple crumble was probably the best pie I had tried today, the apples totally made it– they were soft and just sweet enough. However, the crumble on top was a little soggy, you could tell it’d been out for awhile. All in all it wasn’t terrible but I don’t think it was worth it. I’d come back to try the banana cream.

WE stopped by during the SummerFest this past weekend. They only had a few selections, so we decided on the good old apple pie. Crust was pretty good. I didn’t feel like the filling was sweet enough for my liking. Also, it was served cold. They didn’t offer to warm it up, not sure if thats standard or if it was just because of the festival? $ 4 for a pretty small slice of mediocore tasting pie. Not sure if I would return. If I did I’d probably opt for another flavor.

Maybe I was there on an off day, but my mom and I stopped in after walking around California, and had their little tarts. I had a strawberry rhubarb, and she had a mixed berry. The crusts were dry and flavorless, and the fillings on both were chewy, relatively tasteless, and overpriced for the value. I bake, as a hobby, and so I expect when I buy something from a bakery that it’s the same or better quality than I could produce. Sadly, in this case, Shoofly Pie disappointed me.

PIESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! The pies are so delicious! The key lime pie is #1 for ever and ever. I also tried the coconut cream pie, which was delicious, but the filling to whip cream ratio was not desirable. After finishing my slice I understood why they did it that way(the filling is SO sweet and the whip cream balances that mess down). Even with those slight imperfections the coconut cream pie is very yummy. They also cater weddings… hm…*rubs hands together* try this place out, sit down, read a book, and enjoy a slice of delicious WS pie!

The decision on fine pies versus boutique cupcakes is a no brainer. With a $ 21 Shoofly pie, you are getting something unique, indulgent, that is time consuming if not difficult to make properly which realistically will probably feed 8 people. For the same dollar investment, you can get enough cupcakes down the street to feed(but not satiate) 6 adults with a product not unlike what can be whipped up in minutes at home. Shoofly almost never disappoints. The«almost» equates to a one star deduction driven by sometimes spotty availability. But if you want consistent availability you will likely sacrifice quality(i.e. buying pies at Safeway).

A friend brought me here when I was having a particularly rough week. Right off the bat, a sign on the wall reminded us that pie fixes everything — perfect! True to it’s sentiment, my visit to Shoofly Pie did make me feel infinitely better. The seating space is small, but it’s bright and sunny. They sell mini-pies, full sized pies, savory pies, whole pies, and pies by the slice. I’ve been to other pie places before, but this one is by far my favorite. Not only is it cute, with many options, but I love that they heat the pie up for you in a real oven so it almost tastes fresh baked; and I love that they serve slices, which(1) have a better filling/crust ratio, and(2) seem more home-made than the mini-pies a lot of pie places seem to have these days. My friend and I both got the ham & gruyère quiche, which arrived at our table fresh baked and amazing. Hot, crispy and buttery. We also got more pie for desert — I had the rhubarb, which was amazing — tart, hot, and the perfect consistency topped with vanilla icecream = heaven. A couple of things to note: if you’re eating there, and want your pie heated up, it can take a while since it’s a real oven — but it makes the pie soooo delicious. Also, prices are pretty reasonable — we got both dinner(quiche) & dessert(pie) for around $ 10. For a pie place, five stars.

Came here on a sunny Saturday afternoon and settled on a veggie pot pie after they had run out of the other pot pies. The crust was pretty tasty and flaky but the filling left something to be desired. While the taste was fine, it didn’t seem neither healthy nor decadent… the vegs just tumbled out in little puddles of watery cream sauce — thank goodness there were pats of melted cheddar in there to keep everything glued together. It just wasn’t the image of staunch/stout/solid pot pie goodness(a little disappointing) They do serve forzen custard made by Old School which is seriously delicious. If I come back I’d go for their sweet pies. possibly with custard on the side– it looks like they specialize in those more.

My first actual pie shop on Pie Day last year, I stopped in and picked up a slice of raspberry blackberry, apple crumble, and shepherd’s pie, at a cool $ 3.14 each. And better yet? They have a buy ten get one free stamp card program here! Shame I moved out of Seattle so soon after this, but that’s a separate issue. Overall though, reasonable to hefty servings of solid tasting pies, with good interiors, but lackluster crusts, and as such, does not really make Shoofly worth coming all the way out here for. And as per my usual advice with these things, I’d suggest taking them home and throwing them into a toaster oven for increased awesomeness. Oh, and throw on a scoop of ice cream too, while you’re at it.

I’ve been back several times and I’m STILL glad they are all the way in West Seattle. There are enough food temptations on our side of town. I’ve purchased several whole pies for my pie-lovin’ friend who has enjoyed each and every one. Full stop. Since my review, I have tried their galettes and found them the perfect amount of decadent and savoury. The caramelized onion was perfect with some tomato soup. And their pot pies are truly dangerous! The last time I was there, I learned that they do a Mac n’ cheese pie… WITHBACON. Whew! I cannot fathom how tasty that would be on a chilly day with a hot bowl of soup. The only pie that was a miss with one of my companions was their namesake pie, the Shoofly. I don’t think it is what he was looking for but I tried a bite and it was exactly as I remembered the pie to taste like. I know pies are the new cupcakes and there’s more choices for all your pie needs. I also know that Shoofly Pie Company easily gained that fifth star for their friendliness and quality of product.

Serving pecan pie chilled is wrong, so terribly wrong. A pie bakery should know better. I ordered a slice of the chocolate pecan pie($ 4.35) to be eaten there. Because the slice was ice cold(it came straight from the refrigerated display case), the pie’s flavor was not discernable, and the texture downright unpleasant. My suggestion would be for Shoofly to install a microwave and offer to heat pie slices on the premises. I’m sure if my pie had been served warm(hey, I’d settle for room temperature!) I likely could have added a couple more stars to this review, because the ingredients seemed very good(and they don’t stint on the pecans). Though I didn’t see a microwave(and looked around for one) in Shoofly, I received a friendly PM from Shoofly, and they told me that you can have your pie heated upon request. I wish the cashier had offered to do that for me, because like I said, serving pecan pie chilled is just not right.

Okay pie. Attending Mobile Chowdown VI in West Seattle Junction, it would have been easy to disregard the existing businesses there. Although the food trucks were the big draw, you can’t help but think an event like this is siphoning customers from these places. After downing some picadillo and fish tacos, the obvious next thing to do was to get some dessert. The Junction with Bakery Nouveau, Sugar Rush, Great Harvest, Cupcake Royale and Shoofly has no shortage of options. I decided to give Shoofly a try to see how their pies are. They had a good number of pies available to choose from. You can buy whole pies or just a slice. Also on the menu are galettes(kind of a hand pie/tart) and quiche. I tried a peach-raspeberry galette($ 3.50) and a slice of their signature pie, the shoofly($ 3.50). I reheated the galette and found it to be just fair. The crust is a bit on the thin side, but I like the fresh fruit filling. The shoofly which is a sugary dessert made with brown molasses was decent. The crust was okay. It was one of those crunchy type crusts. I actually left the pie in the fridge and didn’t reheat it, so the filling was a bit tough. The sweetness did come through though. Found Shoofly to be okay for pie. It did not wow me, but it is respectable and they do have a nice selection of fruit pies.

Oh Lord, I am so glad this place is in West Seattle because if it was convenient to my house, I would gain 100 pounds. They have real key lime pie. Delicious tasty scrumptious to-die-for key lime pie. And lots of other pies too(including savoury ones). Come give them a try and see for yourself!

LOVE Shoofly Pie! It’s awesome the crust is butter and not lard! They have so many flavors of pie, both savory and sweet, and for the size you get, it’s extremely worth it! Also, you can start a punchcard with them, and after 10 pie slices, you can get a free pie! A MUST when you’re in West Seattle!
