So I live right around the block from this place. I get my haircut in the plaza biweekly. I run miles around the neighborhood and every time I get water or see the tailor right next door my curiosity grew. Maybe my imagination ran wild like it normally does, maybe I expected too much or maybe I should’ve took a note that with the store name QUAN that it wasn’t meant to be for people that don’t speak the language. I’ve never been to a vietnamese coffee shop/restaurant. I know of them from my vietnamese friends. I already knew it wasn’t a strip club and if I wanted to go to a strip club I could easily go. It was going to be my first time and I invited my cousin who had also never gone. We were charmed by the exotic idea that this would be a slice of life from another culture. And like the old saying goes, «When in rome, do as the romans do»! From the outside on approach you see black windows and a neon lit open sign blinking in the dark. It peaked my interest. I was excited, what type of entertainment have I been missing out on? I open the doors, my cousin and I walk in, we feel the bass, hear the chatter and karaōke… It sounds like a good time! I stop, turn my head from every end of this restaurant, and wait for some sort of host or greeter. An older lady boss looking type without any proper etiquette comes up to us, «HOWMANY»!!! «Two»! I said. As she leads us to the furthest table away from the party, from the corner I can see that there’s about five booths, three taken with groups and two available. We’re so close to the exit I feel like I’m seated first row in a movie theater… The middle of the room there’s two other parties going on but behind them there is one booth just being cleaned up, «Can we sit over there»?? I ask. «Okay one minute» she replied. While we’re waiting for this ten minute minute to be over another server comes over and asks, «Heineken, Corona»?? Sure, we both get a beer each and by the time I’m halfway through boss lady returns to escort us to the booth. Now I feel a little bit better, more integrated in the atmosphere of LoveQuan. I don’t understand the songs being sung but I dig the vibe. A cute girl with a born and bred cali accent comes and considerately gives us the heads up, «The menus aren’t in english but we have meals with chicken or steak and fries»? And just as I’m about to answer boss lady returns, «YOUWANNAEATTT»!!! «YES, She’s Telling Me»! I said. The nice cali girl says something in vietnamese and the boss lady goes away. We order and ms california leaves. From the time I and my cousin wait for our food till I’m ready to ask for the bill. We’re only greeted by another server who’s quickly yelled at by boss lady. While so much time had been passing our beers were replaced once, and even though my cousin thinks the only english music that was played was meant to make us a bit more comfortable, every other table was being entertained while I kept contemplating why the other tables got more attention than ours. I ask cali girl mary for the bill and bounce. I couldn’t understand if my experience was typical but then I come to Unilocal and see the other review about getting their bill cheated. It made me rethink my whole visit. Replaying the night in reverse, our bill was forty five bucks, it was for four beers and a steak and fry platter, neglected the whole night and briefly visited by mary and soft spoken lisa who got yelled at, possibly for hanging out with us. We were originally seated outside the fun zone and for first timers felt pretty unloved by love quan. Was it racism? Was it because we were just a party of two? We came on a thursday which Unilocal says is one of their best days, but if that was true why were we so bored? It was our first time so I dont have anything to compare it too but was also not given a reason to come back.

2nd Vietnamese coffee shop I’ve been to so far. good place, I honestly can’t say anything about the waitresses since I’m not a dude nor am I lesbian, BUT some of the waitresses here are I’m guessing older whereas cho nhot2 on Alvin ave behind jack in the box, the women are in their 20s. and of course, I definitely feel like a man, but the music played here made up for the long work week few rave, hiphop and Vietnamese rave music wee played. the food here is VERY expensive! service was very good and so was the restroom. much better than cho nhot2. restrooms are in the back right. I’m no expert on places like these, but feel free to try out cho nhot2. btw there is NO card machines or cards to use when your group is bored. Hardly any english on the menu so bring a friend who knows vietnamese or just ask the waitress.
