Excellent pork chop and lettuce wraps! Had a great Valentine’s Day eve dinner here! Champagne was awesome

Great seafood, elevated and incredible dishes! We started with the Chargrilled Octopus and Crab Cakes, the scallops and Cobia for entrees, and the chocolate mousse to finish. The octopus was amazing, spiced well, and the cook on them was perfect. The crab cake was not the high note of the meal, more corn meal than crab in the dish, but still had a good flavor. The scallops were absolutely the best scallops we’ve had in Texas. The forbidden rice was a little more saucy than necessary but was a great compliment to the sweetness of the scallops. The cobia plate was well seasoned and balanced perfectly, leaving me on the brink of stuffed. I highly recommend the Starfish to anyone in South Town looking for a great seafood meal.

Beautiful and romantic atmosphere. Excellent and lovable server, she was very kind, and polite, not as informative as we hoped but she was so nice to gather all the answers we were searching for. We sat right in front of the cooking line and what a delightful experience… FOOD was amazing followed by beautiful presentation, like a firecracker of flavor bursting in your mouth with each bit… we will be back !

Amazing food! Little gem in Southtown. From the appetizers to desert it was all great. We have dined from Austin, New York and Rome if you read any bad reviews specifically about the food it is probably from guests who are not use to a certain kind of cuisine the ingredients to the preparation and execution were impeccable. All the servers where so helpful and you could tell they where happy to be there which says a lot about the management. It was a wonderful, small intimate setting but with a little vibe to it. Rachel our server made our night. Definitely worth it!

Came here last night with my gf for a special anniversary dinner and we wanted somewhere new and exquisite, and we were not disappointed. The atmosphere is lovely, the art is interesting, the décor is on point, and the mood is jubilant. We started of with some champagne for the occasion and our server was most helpful with us in selecting one, letting us try a couple before we decided. We also started with a couple apps, the octopus carpaccio and a beet salad. While we waited we enjoyed some of their house bread. The crust was a little burnt, but the bread that wasn’t was delicious, seasoned simply with salt and olive oil and maybe a little butter. Very good. The appetizers came out, beautifully presented and plated setting the bar high for expectations, and they both meet and exceeded them. The octopus was amazing, not rubbery, very citrusy, with olive oil, chives and some squid ink potatoes for substance. All worked well together. The beets as well were amazing cooked and seasoned perfectly wth other players on the plate that I can’t remember. Delicious, fantastic, and very refreshing. Our entrees came out shortly after. She had the butternut squash tortellini with a lobster bisque, while I had the snapper and a broth of some sorts, again I cant remember the details of what it was. They pour it for you tableside so the main aspects of the course dont get too soggy. The tortellini was very good, the bisque as well, I just dont think I would order it again, my gf liked it tho, but I believe she had the same thoughts after we tried tge snapper. The snappers skin was perfectly crisp, veggies we al dente and the broth was a wonderful addition. Again both plates were beautifully plated and excecuted. We sat and pondered desserts for a second, and I decided on the smores. Amazing! Is all I can really say, everything was delcious and we literally scraped the plate clean! They also sent out a little taster of the mexican cookie. Which was good, but I highly recommend the smores. You will not be disappointed. Only things that I could think of for building on and making it better would be better server knowledge of menu, but she was still very helpful. We’ll definitely be back!

I had eaten here once before when they first opened. They served me pretty rubbery scallops, so I wasn’t too impressed, but I figured they were just working out the kinks since they were new. Last weekend, I decided to give these folks another try. Me and my friends all ended up regretting it because we all spent the night huddled next to our toilets. We’re not sure what dish did it since we shared everything we ordered, but it was not a pretty sight. Needless to say, I’ll have to get my seafood fix elsewhere.

We were treated to an overpriced dinner that was fair at best. I ordered a calamari appetizer and after one bite told the server it tasted bad and we did not want to eat it. When I looked over the bill later that evening I was surprised to see a $ 14.00 charge on my bill for this terrible appetizer. The scallops entrée I had for dinner was good but it consisted of 3 scallops and some rice for $ 28.00. I should have known when the three of us walked in for dinner at 7:00 pm on a Tuesday night the restaurant was completely empty.

The entire restaurant is so well put together. Big windows, amazing lights fixtures, hard wood floors, and an open kitchen! They have a beautiful indoor and outdoor space. I enjoyed myself so much here. I started with the Soil and Beets salad and it was amazing. The«soil» looked exactly like soil but had great semi sweet flavor to compliment the perfect roasted beets. Then I had the Barely Cooked Salmon and was very impressed. There was little potato-less and flourless gnocchi on the side along with crispy julienned leeks on top. It was so much flavor and texture. I loved it all. This place is a MUSTGO. Perfect place to go on a date or for a birthday dinner; beautiful atmosphere. The chefs in the open kitchen are friendly and hardworking, and their food is incredible!

I thought this was a nice place, unique. I really enjoyed the décor. Both our server and the owner worked very hard to please us, especially when somebody in our group was unhappy. I must admit, I had only salad and a drink with some dessert. I am a vegetarian and I don’t care for seafood. I was just along for the ride with a group of friends who wanted to give this place try. They kindly accommodated me and I appreciated that. The servings are not large, that is better for me but not everybody enjoys smaller portions as I do. I would definitely expect this place to grow and evolve over time, based on the owner’s explanation of future plans, and would be willing to come back.

Had such a great experience there on Friday night! Still can’t believe i hadn’t heard of this place. The food so so amazing! Everything was delicious, so creative and complex flavors that were so amazing! I have been telling everyone since going. Can’t wait to go back next weekend with more friends.

Fresh! Creative cocktails, thorough but not pretentious wine list, eclectic selection of beers all complement perfectly prepared and presented food(particularly the seafood). Start with the Sangria. And take your time perusing the menu for today’s specials, locally sourced when possible. Don’t skip the hand-crafted desserts. YOLO.

I loved it. I had no expectations walking in(my friend picked it and I don’t live in San Antonio). It’s beautiful inside. The ambience is great and the artwork works. Our server was amazing. Each staff member looks smart and unique and our server was beautiful inside and out. She made a custom drink for me at the bar, and her recommendations for foods to eat were right on point. I’m a super picky eater but she made sure that I would like what I ended up getting. We had three courses and a drink. She made me a virgin mango mojito, which I loved. We had the crab in the hole appetizer — divine! For my entrée, I had the snapper — loved it. For dessert, we had the upside down lemon tart. It wasn’t my favorite but it grew on me and looked amazing. I recommend!

I’m not a big seafood person. Maybe it’s because I never find it filling(true). Maybe it’s because I have a shellfish allergy(very true). I think it’s because I’m from Texas(not true). But looking at the menu, this place sounded too awesome to pass up. Sadly for us, it fell a little short, with one service error that kind of ruined the meal. There is a dedicated parking lot right in front of the restaurant, so don’t struggle with street parking. It’s a cool ambiance, with big artwork painted on reclaimed wood planks and jellyfish light fixtures. It’s small and quaint, with open views to the kitchen, which I love(and helpful to see if they spit my food after I sent it back. Haha, just kidding, this place is very classy). Here’s what we ordered: Crab In A Hole($ 13) — rye blini, cantaloupe, warm crab, head cheese Lettuce Wrap($ 12) — Hawaiian prawns, macadamia curry cream, mango froth Seafood Ravioli($ 21) — lobster essence, rutabaga, braised fennel, liquorice Salt Baked Branzino($ 20) — Red quinoa, green apple and fennel jam, mustard aioli I mean, that’s pretty awesome, right? The waitstaff is very helpful and enthusiastic about the menu, as well as the wine selection. The apps(Crab and Lettuce Wrap) were good. It was definitely a unique flavor combination, especially the crab. The crab meat was fresh and exploded with flavor, so much sho thwat my wips shwelled up. Oh yeah, I have a shellfish allergy. Damn it, where’s the epi pen? For some odd reason, they brought out my Branzino, without bringing my partner’s Seafood Ravioli. So I waited for her dish, before eating. Right? That’s proper table etiquette. My mom would be so proud! And so we waited, for about at 7 – 10 minutes. Now, waiting 7 – 10 minutes for a cab or bus, goes by in a flash. 7 – 10 minutes with food in your face, to me, is an eternity. At this point,(Mom, stop reading), I said f* it, and dug into the Branzino. And it was cold. Sigh. So we sent it back to get refired. Then, after they took back my Branzino to get fired, they brought the Seafood Ravioli! So we waited another few minutes, while the Seafood Ravioli got cold to get the Branzino back! Madness. They did try to explain the mix up, and I wasn’t entirely clear nor did we care at this point. Even worse, the entrees weren’t that great. The pasta on the ravioli was terrible. Maybe it’s how it is supposed to be, but I was envisioning soft, fluffy, doughy pasta, and instead, it was tough and chewy. The broth had a bite to it, which overrode the seafood flavor. The Branzino was okay and the skin had a nice crispness to it, though not the *crunch* of a potato chip. It was also still cold despite the refire. They did offer to comp our next drinks, which was nice, but we declined. At this point, with the waiting and okay entrees, we passed on desert. Shocking! I never pass on dessert! I did not get to a BMI of 30 by passing on dessert! But I did. So worth trying? I suppose. Although, if you want seafood, my recommendation would be The Sandbar.

This is a review from March 20th, just now getting around to it… Sorry, lol. Was very excited to take my better half on our 2 year Anniversary to Starfish, I had always heard such great things and I also had a friend who worked in the kitchen and was dying to try his new food. I made a reservation for 6:30 but when we got there the hosted said they had no reservation under my name. The chef i knew saw that we were about to leave and found us room at the bar(which btw is very uncomfortable, if you have ever sat at their bar you would know what im talking about). Not gonna lie, i was super upset that our res was lost but none the less i was super excited to finally try some great food! And the staff definitely made up for it. We ordered so much food. The Caesar salad was great, the raw Oysters were Amazing, the Scallops flavor combinations were definitely perfect! Candied carrots, pears, prosciutto, and Scallops are heaven! I love that you get a harty amont of food on your plate as opposed to other restaurants that put a dot or paint brush of sauce with 3 haricot verts. This place fills you up, leaving you satisfied. My only issue with the food was that the plating was very messy. The bartenders/servers are warm and conversational. Chef Diego came up and offered us the Grilled Bread(YUM) and talked us up. Chef Gilbert made us a nice sorbet, very refreshing. Everyone around us seemed so happy and really were enjoying their dining experience. :D

My wife and I went out for a romantic dinner and decided to try a new restaurant, Starfish. To quickly summarize the service and move onto the food, it was sub-par. Actually, my wife just mentioned that«everything was sub-par», but lets get down to brass tacks. We started with some cocktails — The«Rhum Daquiri» was pretty good, but does not match the description. It’s served in a martini glass, not frozen like traditional Daquiri’s, and was luke warm. My wife ordered the«Perfect Storm» which she said was amazing! One of the best cocktails she’s had in awhile — I also tried it and can confirm, pretty solid. She ordered another. We ordered two appetizers and one salad. The first appetizer was the«Scallop», which consisted of 6 very thinly sliced silver dollar sized portions. They were spiced and covered with different types of peppers, but didn’t quite taste like scallops. The wifey enjoyed them but, not for me. The second appetizer was the«Satchel» which consisted of gulf shrimp, fish cheeks, wild rice and anduille — but also came with bacon pieces and green peas in the mix(not on the description) Actually, I’ll stop here and point out that nothing on the menu was exactly as described, which is the point of a menu. I eat green peas every day for my diet, and I didn’t want to accidentally order them for my dinner. To continue, the dish was covered in fish sauce and was more of a broth, but couldn’t be eaten very well with forks, no spoons provided. It only had two shrimp(not cooked that well), and one fish cheek. It also had brussels sprouts in it, also not in the description. They were the best part of the dish. The third and final item we ordered was the«Caesar Salad» which is described on the menu as «Baguette, White Anchovies, Brown Butter Tahini» but didn’t describe how the lettuce was wilted, charred, luke warm(not crisp and cold like a nice Caesar), and was dressed heavily. The anchovies were huge. The best part was the parmesan crisps, which were fabulous! We barely ate half of the dish before letting the waitress take it away. To finalize my review, they also served us their house bread, which was charred(in our opinion burnt), which was pretty good but we didn’t want to eat it due to the burnt taste. The waitress tried to accommodate, but its hard to make up for sub-par food. My wife pointed out that the look on the chef’s faces had changed from concentration, to that of frustration and defeat. We left the restaurant after several others were complaining around us, and decided to save the rest of our appetite for a better dinner course. We headed over to one of our favorite places, Bliss. Actually, after finishing this review I’m going to leave a 5⁄5 star review on Unilocal for Bliss, it was fantastic! I hope others have a better experience than we did at Starfish, and maybe we just ordered the wrong things or got unlucky on the service that night, but we will try it again in the future, if only for more cocktails. The most disappointing thing by far was the failure to describe the dishes correctly on the menu ~ It’s not fun receiving a plate that barely resembles the description. Goodluck Starfish. Summary: 1 star for the parmesan crisps, 1 star for the cocktails. –3 stars for the rest.

We went to date nigh here last night. It was our first time. A few of the highlights from last night. We lived the appetizers. Great portion size too. It was seriously the best octopus appetizer I have ever had. And it was done in a new way that we’ve never tried before. I will come back just for this as it stole the show! Also tasty were the oysters on the half shell. We could’ve ordered more… so so good. The duck pot pie was awesome and so delicious. So savory. Not something you would think to order at a seafood restaurant, but I’m so glad we did. We will be back! Also the tables in the front near the street and the cool light fixtures were perfect. Really made for great ambiance.

This newly opened seafood restaurant is the best seafood in Southtown! The place is beautiful, with lots of wonderful local art and handmade glass jellyfish lights(awesome!) I had the salmon which was served with fall veggies and a piece of pork belly. It was a bit weird having a piece of pork about a cubic inch worth thrown in with the seafood, but it was welcomed. The food was delicious. The veggies were prepared to perfection, and it came with a lavender sauce that was absolutely delicious. The service was spot on– they explained everything on the menu, and once we received our dishes, they walked us through what they were making. I was really impressed by their attention to detail. The place was clean, and well lit. Parking was a bit of an issue, but it’s in Southtown, so whaddya expect. I will certainly be back!

Admittedly, my first impression of Starfish was partly my fault. I’m a chronic early bird and walked in at 5:15, unaware that they weren’t open yet. When I asked to sit at the bar and looked around to sadly see they don’t have a bar, the waiter told me to take a seat by the open kitchen. Then, the chef tells me they aren’t open but I can sit if I wanted. Very awkward/off-putting but again, kinda my fault. Walked down the street for a few beers to kill time. Came back closer to 7ish, ready to destroy some crab cakes and was seated at the open kitchen again. First real gripe, their«open kitchen» seating is more like seating 3 feet below where the actual cooking is going on while you scoot your seat in constantly for people/waiters walking behind you. Ordered a cocktail and crab cakes. Drinks came out half empty(there is no half full when it comes to alcohol) and were delish but for $ 9 — $ 12, I expected, you know, a full size drink. App arrived and it was gorgeously plated. Like, Picasso-level sh*t. I would tell you it was almost too pretty to eat but let’s be honest, I’d eat a Monet painting if it was drizzled with chocolate. Plating? Check. Taste? Well. my crab cakes were not crab cakes. More like minced crab meat underneath a chalupa shell. So. upside down crab chalupas? I think that they meant you to scoop the crab onto the chips? Either way after removing the chalupa shell, I could see the crab meat was bleached white and in a perfect circle shape. like the shape of a can. and looked eerily similar to something that has the word«feast» and«fancy.» Scooted the thought outta my mind and took a bite. Crazy bland. Tried dipping it in one of the many sauces drizzled on my plate and nope, nada, nothing. This was a sad, expensive plate. My favorite parts of this Starfish experience were the jelly pendant lights and the bread basket.

Starfish is a great addition to Southtown… it’s not easy to find seafood there! We went on a Friday night about 7pm & were immediately asked if we had reservations(we did not). It’s a very small, probably too cozy table arrangement and it was full(which, isn’t accommodating many people). The manager was a very nice, easygoing guy who explained to us that they were featured in the San Antonio Express News & had been getting«slammed» ever since. He kindly set us up on a small bar to the right as you walk in… BEST seat in the house! Great people watching on S. Alamo, right by the hostess/kitchen entrance… we felt very VIP/lucky to not be crammed amongst the masses. Anyway, Starfish is owned by the same folks as Azuca & you see a lot of running back & forth of staff between the two restaurants. The décor is fun & modern — I especially loved the jellyfish lights along the bar! There’s a patio in the back that the manager told us they’ll open soon & it will accommodate 70 people(seemed a bit small so expect to be sardines inside & out!). The food was all quite good. The menu is quite small, but has plenty of selection & intrigue. We started with the Hawaiian poke(I liked it, but, I’ve never had a poke before… the tuna was very fresh & had a nice texture… the salt of the soy sauce & tart/chew from the seaweed was nice), panzanella salad(mmm, chunks of toasted bread in a salad, fresh mozzerella… need I say more?!), & croquettes(I was hesitant… but VERY good & moist with a nice smoky flavor). My friend got the salmon entrée… we noticed the entrée portion was quite smaller than the appetizers so I’d say if you’re hungry, order mostly from the starters menu for sizable portions. The Lighthouse cocktails was delicious & refreshing: Deep Eddy red ruby vodka, champagne, & grapefruit juice. I could drink ‘em for days… Between the great, accommodating staff & pretty decent food, I’d return!
