West End Bikes

I could not be happier with the service I received from Billy at West End. I am not an avid bike rider, and had a lot of questions when I first came in. He answered every single question, even though I interrupted him in the middle of working on something else (oops). This guy definitely knows his bikes, and helped me find the perfect one! The whole team here seems really wonderful, but Billy was awesome.
So happy to have found a bike shop that cares about their product so much :)

I dropped in during lunch since my back tire popped during my bike ride in to work. They were incredibly nice, and took my bike in to get fixed ASAP. Within 10 minutes, they’d replaced my tube and filled up my other tire for $ 18. Kinda pricey, but they were fast, nice, and located conveniently in downtown, where there aren’t many bike places.

We were looking for a bike for my 11 year old daughter. They were amazing. they were super friendly, helpful and generous with their time. It was clear that their knowledge of bikes was much stronger than other places we visited. Very happy to have found them.

These guys (and ladies) are fantastic. First of all the store is immaculate, modern and well stocked. The staff is super friendly and they really helped me out. I’m in town on business and wanted to get in a couple of rides. They rented me a Wilier Triestina carbon road bike and got it all fitted out for me. They also spent the time to write out their favorite routes and basically did everything possible to make sure I had a good experience. Thank you Aaron (hopefully I’m not butchering that spelling) and Billy! I will most definitely hit you guys up next time I’m in town.
Guys I’m coming back and I can’t wait to rent another sweet ride from you. I’m going to remember to bring my kit this time though :) and pedals. See you this weekend!

My brother came to visit me from New York this weekend. I’m so happy. He picked the best weekend ever to escape the city. Today I had to work so he wandered about the city and in to your store. He HAS NOT SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT IT. As I am writing this review he is constantly checking if I’m saying something nice. He loves your store. I’ll check it out.

–This review is for an incident that happened about 4 months ago–
Customer service is weird here. I came in asking if they sold frame saver and the bike mechanic said «bring your bike in and I’ll do it for $ 5. Why buy a bottle of frame saver for $ 20 that you’ll use once?» Wow! Seems like it makes sense. He went on to explain that I’d have to disassemble the bike completely or else the price will go up dramatically.
A few months later, I finally found the time to disassemble the bike and bring it in. I explained to the mechanic working that day about the deal the guy quoted me and asked her what price she’d charge me since 1) he wasn’t there and 2) I couldn’t remove the bottom bracket because I didn’t have the right tool. She said, «if you were quoted $ 5 that’s what I’ll charge no problem». Nice, right? She didn’t hesitate, she didn’t ask the manager first, she gave me the second quote of $ 5.
I left the shop and got a call about an hour later from another guy (the manager or owner?) explaining he would not let her do it for $ 5, that he fired the guy who quoted me that price and that it would cost me about $ 37 for labor and the price of the can of frame saver they’re going to open because supposedly «once you open it it isn’t going to be good forever». Seemed odd so I asked him if I’d be able to keep the leftover frame saver since I’m paying for it and he said yes. I was a bit annoyed but I agreed because, hey, I’m happy to support a local business and this is a sentimental project for me.
Once I got back to the shop and got my frame back, I told the mechanic that I am taking the left over frame saver since I paid for the whole bottle (as previously agreed). She stated there «was barely any left» but I insisted on it. She handed me the bottle which was ¾ full! I was shocked. Shocked that they charged me for the whole bottle, shocked that she lied about how much was left in that bottle, reeling from the whole ordeal and just wanting to leave without shedding a tear after the way I’d been treated.
Moral of the story is that apparently these folks do not take you seriously unless you’re getting some pro tune ups done here. $ 5 was seemingly the honest price that two of their own mechanics quoted to me before the boss up’d it 7x that and then asked me to pay for an entire can of frame saver that they weren’t even intending to give to me after the fact.
Yikes, guys. I know I’m small time business for them, but I built this bike and it means a lot to me. Enough to have it frame saved before I take it home to de-​rust and lacquer it /​build it back up. Sorry to waste your time, but at least I paid way more than I was quoted right? Man, nothing like getting extremely let down by what seemed like a small neighborhood business that you want to support. Heartbreaking.
I don’t pretend to know how much the price should have been and that’s why I asked them TWICE and it’s my opinion that they should have honored those quotes. The worst part is, I was planning to buy the frame saver and do it myself originally and was reeled in by what ended up being either shady business tactics or just plain bad training.

What a great place! My two friends and I had only one day in Portland while passing through on a bike tour and these guys really helped us out when we needed a tune up. Friendly people, cool store, great repairs. 100% recommend.

Came to West End Bikes in February to pick out a bike as a birthday present from my partner. This was the 5^th bike shop we went to and the place we finally purchased a bike. They just had a better selection and a lot more bikes that were not strictly for the biking elite (much higher price range at most of the shops we went to). Bill helped us out and he was really helpful. He quickly fit me for a nice bike in our price range. Even though some of the bikes were really expensive, he was more than willing to help with our lower price range and understood what would be good for my biking needs. I am definitely not a seasoned biker, but I didn’t feel out of place there or like I was being «judged» as I did in some other bike shops we visited that day. We purchased our bike, the guys in the shop gave it a solid check to make sure everything was good to go and I was able to take it home that day. The only issue I had was that I ordered a helmet and it took about a month and a half for it to finally come into the store. No one contacted me to let me know there was a delay, I had to finally contact them and I did multiple times to keep checking on my helmet. Was definitely frustrating since I bought the helmet the day I ordered it and didn’t even get it for a long time. Stacey was very helpful though and did respond to all my emails pretty quickly, and at the end offered me a $ 20 gift card which I really did appreciate. Now I am looking forward to enjoying my new bike and riding it safely now that my helmet is in my possession!

I recently needed a bearing replaced on my bike. I work downtown, so it ended up being easiest for me to drop it by West End Bikes. Didn’t know what to expect from a downtown bike shop, but I was more than impressed. Both times I dropped in to have the bike looked at, the mechanic stopped what he was doing to diagnose my issues. He did a great job of showing me what needed to be fixed, and why. I also received a phone call during the repair to ask me about additional things I could have done while they had the bike. I didn’t end up doing it, but it was nice to be informed.
Choosing a downtown location, I was already prepared to pay a bit extra. I did end up dropping a good amount of money, but I was comfortable that all repairs were made, and the parts used were high quality. Beyond cost, they were also pretty backed up. Luckily, I was leaving town, as my repairs & tune up ended up taking almost a week to complete.
My bike is my primary means of transportation, so it means a lot to me to keep it running smoothly. Convenience might cost a little extra, but the customer service and thorough repairs are worth it.

I immediately got the impression that this was a store geared for professionals or at least for those with plenty of cash. The give away was the wall of bikes at the door that were in the thousands of dollars range. I can’t think of any actual cycling professionals that I may even be aware of so I can only conclude this store is full Portland Hipster. If you want to dress up like a circus clown and ride in front of me on the street at 5Mph on your $ 10,000 bike I feel like you’d be at home here. If you’re just an average dude looking for some bike stuff I don’t think this is the place.

I guess I’m not hip enough. Got poor response to my detailed, online service request – well, no response at all, so I stopped by the shop.
The service manager just grabbed a service slip. I stopped him to do his job for him. How much is a tune up here? When can you do this work? I wanted it done within a few days. Didn’t look good, so I said I’d think it over, but as I left, the service manager tried to tell me I was probably ruining my internal hub, since it was skipping.
Went to Seven Corners instead. They said there was no such danger to the hub. They fixed a loose cable that was making the hub skip and threw on some new brake pads to get me riding for the week. Only charged me eight bucks! I scheduled a full tune up and hub cleaning at the end of the week.
Oh, yeah, I finally got a response to my original online service request – long after Seven Corners already fixed it.
Forget West End. Who needs the attitude?

I’m interested in replacing my old Specialized bike with a new more comfortable model. I looked for places on the Specialized website and located West End Bikes within walking distance from where I live. The store wasn’t real busy during my 10 minute visit and I was never greeted or offered service. It was difficult to tell who worked there, but I think some of the staff walked right by me without any acknowledgement. Therefore, I simply left and will find a new bike somewhere else.
However, all is not lost from this experience, I often give presentations to large groups of retailers on the importance of exceptional customer service, especially focused on greeting the customer.

Don’t bother coming here if you don’t fit their «preferred» customer look. I spent 10 minutes with a friend looking at bikes and wondering aloud about the differences between some models and their price (since nothing is marked), but personnel were much more interested in talking to each other. Finally, one asked if I had any questions but surprise! he was actually talking THROUGH me to the nanohipster with full sleeves and gauged ears behind me.
To hell with this place.

Cramped and spooky. Really not worth my time to travel from the east side. Their clientele must only be of the affluent in the area. Pearl district. Their vibes kinda make me want to take my bike (specialized), and throw it into the water from the Broadway bridge. Self indulgence comes to mind. Just can’t draw me in.

In a clearly higher end skewed bike shop, I was really pleased and grateful for their friendliness and accessibility, quickly seeing me when i got a flat downtown and needing it fixed. On a quite busy day, they saw me right away, and even let me know the cause of recent frequent flats — the wrong size tube, swapping it out. I didn’t have my wallet on me, and they graciously allowed me to phone it in later. Whether you’re in the market for a new bike, some accessories or a repair/​tune up, I’d definitely recommend this place.

West End is a real deal, all encompassing and extremely well crafted bike shop. If you’re an avid commuter their hardgoods alone will leave you smiling but what really attracted me was their variety of functional and attractive commuter clothing. We’re talking button up shirts and slacks that have so many hidden cycle-​friendly features that you’ll feel like you’re Bruce Wayne.
Awesome selection of road, mountain and urban bikes with a strong emphasis on Specialized and Cinelli. Mark, the owner, knows what he’s talking about and has followed cycling (his passion) his whole life. He steps aside of trends and goes with what works. I will definitely be returning.

Came here to get some visors for my wife, left with a pair of Tifosi photochromic for a good price. No complaints, no fuss. There was a very impressive bike being serviced while I was there, so they must be doing something right.

I am a total bike newbie who recently got a fold-​up bike to run errands around downtown with. Needless to say, I wasn’t expecting to do much maintenance for my bike, not knowing how often to check out stuff like tires or gears.
Pretty soon I pinched the tube in my front tire and ended up at West End. They were incredibly friendly and explained some of the most basic tenants of bike maintenance to me, for which I was grateful. They also replaced my tube and within 10 minutes I was ready to bike back home.
I would definitely recommend West End Bikes if you’re downtown and need a quick repair or spare part.
They also have a cute looking coffee shop, but it was closed by the time I showed up.

West End Bikes is a dream! I popped in there this weekend when I was in town on vacation. They have amazing customer service, and are very attentive. They even offered my dog a bowl of water, which was so thoughtful and sweet.
They had reasonable prices, and were really eager to help and offer suggestions.

Awesome store and solid selection featuring but not limited to the Specialized brand. They have bikes for all price levels, from $ 300 up to $ 10,000. They have all the accessories you can ever want. Customer service is good and friendly and they have a coffee bar inside.
