Umpqua Bank

I seriously love my bank. I have been with Umpqua for over 5 years and have been nothing but pleased. The quality of people and service is consistent (I have used both Bend and Portland branches), letters/​process is easy, solid security and there is always a smile! I believe that behind that smile must be good management, because the employees genuinely seem content, which makes for solid customer service.
A perk today was when I had mentioned that I liked the coffee they were serving in the lobby (yes, you get cookies, tea and coffee). The gentleman at the counter then offered me a free bag of Umpqua coffee beans!

We had our first and second mortgage with Umpqua. The second was set up as a line of credit. Although the line of credit was partially used it constantly was having bank charges on it that could not be explained to me. Additionally there is a yearly charge for the account whether you have a balance on it or not, really the interest isn’t enough you are adding additional charges? We have finally refinanced with another bank to remove ourself from this nonsense. Although we paid closing costs through our new bank when we went in to make sure every thing was closed properly at Umpqua they are charging us over $ 100 to close the line of credit account which has had a zero balance on it for over a year. Wow look out for additional unexpected costs on the line of credit. Original loan was supposed to be set up with auto payment for reduced interest rate, that never got fixed correctly and oh so many other issues… If there was something lower than 1 star I would pick that.

Horrible web site, horrible (non-​existant) customer service. Their web banking is offline more often than it isn available. their ATM’s are painfully slow. Entirely the worst banking experience I have ever had, they *were* awesome… but I am honestly tempted to go back to one of the big evil banks where at least someone can answer the phone.

SO happy to have finished moving my business over from Wells Fargo earlier this year. I’ve been a personal account customer of Umpqua’s for about 2 – 3 years now, and Matt Dake and Heather Berebitsky at this branch have just provided me with absolutely stellar service. The peace of mind in knowing I can email or call them and get an immediate response to any questions is worth a slightly lower interest rate than you might be able to get at an online bank or elsewhere. And, they’re open on Saturdays which is huge for me since I’m basically at my office when banks are open during the week.

Why I bank at Umpqua bank: Friendly tellers know my name and I know theirs. Umpqua likes to connect with the Pearl community. They always are open on First Thursday’s with finger foods and a guest, i.e. like and artist, writer, or business owner. You may stop during bank hours and use one of their computers to surf the web, grab a cup of coffee, relax in an easy chair, read the newspaper and watch the stock market «whip saw» up and down on a TV.
But the best reason to bank here is that independent bank monitor
gives Umpqua a maximum 5 FIVE STAR rating for financial stability. I researched a number of banks before deciding – my bucks $$ stop here!
If you have extra bucks $$$, Umpqua can help you invest in CD or refer you to an Mr. M&M, a licensed FINRA advisor– that is a Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Inc., who can show ways to invest in Oregon municipal, corporate, any bonds and other finacncial market segments, like mutual funds.
Could it be any sweeter? Yes! With each transaction comes a smile and a chocolate!

I have had good to great experiences at other Umpqua banks in Portland but this particular branch is really bad. The reps are very stuffy and uptight and clearly will treat you better if you are wearing a business suit versus jeans. They always seem very condescending in their responses and I always feel unwelcome at this particular branch. Stay away from this branch if you value friendly bank reps.

I really enjoy my relationship with Umpqua, but really, I’m just writing to give kudos to Kevin who works at this branch. I absent-​mindedly left my debit card there, and he literally ran blocks after me to ensure that it was safely back in my possession. Awesome.

My partner and I opened a join checking account, savings account, and credit card with Umpqua. One week later we closed all 3 and stopped discussions regarding our brokerage account and returned to Wells Fargo. I’ve never had such bad service, inaccurate information, and lack of interest in understanding clients’ needs as I experienced at Umpqua bank.
Even after going up 2 levels of management I was still unable to get satisfaction. My credit is excellent (750+ credit score). My bank balance and brokerage account would be in 6 figures. They were not interested in understanding or keeping my business.
If you want a coffee shop and free computers… go to Umpqua. If you want a BANK… go elsewhere.

If you choose a bank by how hip the branches are, or whether they give you a cookie when you step in, read no further. Umpqua is the bank for you.
If you choose a bank because it makes banking easy, look elsewhere. I’ve had both Business and a Personal account with Umpqua for 2 years. It was my first experience with a bank, and not a credit union, and am looking forward to move back to credit unions. Here are some of the reasons that I can recall at the moment:
— Umpqua has made it exceptionally hard to apply for Business & Personal loans. They’ve imposed document requirements and bounced me around the organization in ways I’ve never experienced in prior banking, to the point that my credit line is with another bank.
— They’ve repeatedly snuck in fees without warning that I had to discover and report.
— They’ve change my credit card numbers twice which is a huge hassle as anyone who does many online payments would know.
— Their phone customer support has quite limited hours, which I’ve found inconvenient on many occasions.
— I’ve been repeatedly treated with an attitude by their phone support staff (although to their credit, their phone staff is usually very knowledgeable)
— Their online banking interface leaves *much* to be desired
— They are late-​comers when it comes to mobile banking. Even when they introduced «mobile baking» they only targeted iPhones. To date Android users still have to use a laughable WAP interface.
— I transferred my Mortgage from BoA to Umpqua in an attempt to consolidate. Since the transfer I have not received a single monthly statement, nor there is a web site where I can check my mortgage.
— I have my checking & savings accounts connected (overdraft protection), yet Umpqua will charge $ 10 every time it needs to transfer from savings to checking (have not seen this before in my prior banks)
— They open at 9 or 10 am depending on location, so forget about taking care of something before work.
I could keep on going… My recommendation is: choose a credit union. There are plenty of great ones in Portland.

I’m an Umpqua customer and trying to figure out on your website the cost of a Wire transfer. Most banks have a fee schedule online where they list all their fees. Do you have a sheet like that online? If not, could you email one to me? Thanks in advance and happy new year!

Not only they don’t post their fee schedule online like most banks, but the only way to get it is via snail mail. This is 2011, come on!

I run a small business, and switched to Umpqua about six years ago, after years of putting up with mistakes from Wells Fargo. Boy, do I love these guys. Great service, common sense, and they support the community. They have never made a mistake on my accounts yet

When I moved to Portland, I had to find an alternative to my excellent southern California credit union. I did my homework, and chose Umpqua based on their «hip checking» account. In exchange for jumping through a few hoops every month (paperless statements, 10 debit transactions, and one online billpay), you earn a modest interest rate — 2% when I signed up, 1.5% currently — and get a refund on fees at all ATMs.
Umpqua is the Jet Blue of banking: slick modern design and free snacks distract you from the fact that their services are virtually no different from their staid, ordinary competitors. Free coffee and tea? Cookies on Fridays? Chocolate when you make a deposit? Commence Pavlovian drooling.
When I walked into the Pearl location to open my account, I was greeted by a friendly associate and taken into an office to fill out the necessary paperwork. After about 15 minutes of entering the info from my forms into the computer, the associate called for backup. Another banker appeared, and they scrutinized my forms, then the computer as if they’d uncovered the Rosetta Stone. Minutes passed. The employees faced me, one smiling, one not.
«I’m sorry,» says smiley.
« – but you will NEVER be able to open an account with Umpqua Bank,» pronounces the other.
(N.B. My credit is stellar; my debts are non-​existent, and I am fiscally fit.)
I’m taken aback. I feebly demand answers, and the stern one tells me I have multiple credit accounts in collections in the state of Arizona. I have never lived in Arizona. I lean across the desk to see the screen myself.
Turns out they’d transposed two digits in my SSN when entering my info, which they quickly remedied. A hilarious, but temporarily heart-​stopping mistake! (and Ms. Arizona at xxx-​50-​xxxx, I hate you.)
Since that initial experience, I’ve had nothing but great service from Umpqua. Highly recommended, especially if you maintain a high enough balance in your account to benefit from the interest-​bearing checking options.

I like the branch, service, and they always have coffee and treats!

Started banking here when I first moved to Portland in ’08. Wanted to do business with a local bank and I haven’t been disappointed. My service at every branch I’ve been to (this one most) has never been short of exemplary. I have no complaints and am happy to use the services of a smaller bank, as opposed to B of A or Wells Fargo (they, specifically, can go to hell). They also have free web browsing available if you ever do have to wait. No complaints at all!

I dislike banks. I really do. In my entire, albeit short, banking history, I have come to hate walking inside of a bank. See, I know how to balance my checkbook and keep track of all my purchases, but some banks in this world just don’t post things online or let you know how much money is really in your accounts, giving you an idea of how much you can or can’t spend. So when I went into Umpqua to open up a new checking account and essentially leaving my old bank in the dust, I wasn’t expecting to actually find a bank I liked, but that was exactly what happened. The reasons are as such:
— The people were really nice. There were no fake smiles. They all seemed to genuinely want to help me out setting up my account and didn’t care that I’m a poor college student opening up my checking account with the absolute minimum needed.
— They had free (good) coffee and tea while you wait, as well as cookies on Friday.
— Their website is so cute! As I am a girl, I constantly fall into the black hole of loving anything that’s aesthetically pleasing, something I will not apologize for.
— The location is mighty convenient. It’s just a free blocks down from my apartment and it’s also right on the streetcar line.
— They have free internet that both patrons and non-​patrons alike can partake of, as well as computers that anyone can use to check their email or look something up.
— They gave me chocolate for making a deposit. Let me repeat this statement for the full effect … THEY GAVE ME CHOCOLATE! This basically sealed the deal for me. Yup, I’m fickle like that.
All in all, it was a good first day with my new bank. They haven’t given me a reason to dislike them, and I hope that they never do, because I’m ready to be faithful to such an awesome bank. That is, until they do wrong by me. Umpqua Bank, you rekindled my faith in banks once more.
