Ignore the Overlook Hotel vibe, the food is outstanding. Got the chorizo hash and my wife got the eggs benedict and we both couldn’t have been happier: the sauces were light and well made and the portions were spot on.

Same seat at the bar but different bartender. Same result: great cocktail, good food, happy hour price, and excellent service. This place has a fantastic list of whiskey! Close to the Marriott which works for me.

We stumbled upon this place while doing some shopping downtown. The happy hour is fantastic, which was great because unless it’s date night we cannot afford to come here. We had the taco, jalapeño pooper and the poutine. ALL were delicious and reasonably priced. I had an aperol spritzer, delightfully tasty and refreshing. The place was not busy at all which we really enjoyed.

We stayed at the Hotel Monaco recently and really loved it, except for one bad experience with room service through the Red Star Tavern. We had explored the hotel during the day and were surprised that such a quirky and unique themed hotel had such a basic and generic looking restaurant. One evening during our stay we found ourselves too exhausted to venture out for dinner, and decided to give the Red Star Tavern a shot, since they deliver room service throughout the hotel! Having eaten spicy foods our entire trip, we decided to play it safe(I ordered chicken noodle soup; my beau ordered chicken strips with French fries). It arrived very promptly! The chicken chunks in my soup were perfectly cube shaped(oddly unappetizing) and the basic mirepoix was undercooked to the point of crunchy. The celery still had a raw, stringy texture. My boyfriend’s chicken looked good(clearly not frozen or canned as I suspected mine to be) and was served on a bed of crispy thin cut French fries! Unfortunately the chicken strips lacked any flavor, and their accompanying fries were salted to the point of sodium overdose. The chocolate mousse was not bad, but wasn’t anything to write home about. I noticed that it seemed like everything was homemade, but without gusto. Like something you would whip up half heartedly for dinner after working all day for sustenance, but not for enjoyment. Oh, well! It was our one bad meal in all of our explorations of Portland. Unfortunate that such a fun, fabulous hotel doesn’t have food to match.

My husband & I ventured on a spontaneous trip to Portland recently. It seems we had a better experience than others. Red star was right downstairs in our hotel. We went here twice. The first was be side our room was not ready when we arrived, so we sat at the bar and caught up on emails & work. We had drinks & an order of fries. They were so delicious! Crunchy & not oily. The second time was when we came back here for dinner! The service was great. Our server was prompt to bring us water & bread, took our orders, & food came out quickly. We ordered the Brussels sprouts, the mussels, & brisket. Everything tasted delicious. The brisket melted in our mouth. Will definitely come back here when we are in town!

So disappointed in the service and the food. We ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and a burger. I had a glass of red wine and my son had a soda. The bill was $ 50 and the service was not good. Our seats were so close to the gentlemen sitting behind us that we were literally in their conversation. When the food arrived it looked like it was from a backyard bbq where they overcooked everything. The burger was 1⁄3 the size of the bun and charred. I would of sent it back but my son was ready to go and didn’t want to deal with the already disappointing service. I was so excited to bring my son here. He is 16 and when I was pregnant with him I had worked here on the line and as a pastry chef. It was nice to reminisce and tell him stories but the experience is not worth returning for.

I’ve taken a few dates to Red Star and it’s become my go-to place for happy hour due to the price for quality and the convenience of the location. I’ve never had a bad experience with any waitstaff and their drinks are made to my liking. I recommend the tacos — super tasty. While there’s nothing super exceptional to deserve a five-star rating, I also can’t think of a reason not to keep going back.

If you’re going to charge upwards of $ 13 for drinks they should hire a bartender that knows their way around a bar.

Casey was an amazing server. It was a very special event. Bill with tip was under $ 200 with a bottle and a few drinks. Would recommend the mussels and the waygu beef.

On Easter I had the pleasure of having the grilled chicken salad. OMG … Totally to die for. Additionally, there coffee is so good It does not need to be doctored. Oh yeah… Ask for Ben, he is wonderful.

I often forget about this place. It’s sorts not my typical haunt, as it’s not a nasty dive bar. It’s bright, polished and clean. The bar is sprawling, however if you get there early enough, you can camp out in the big comfy booth like seats in the way back. Service is hit miss, we had a decent server, but the bartender was SLOW! We had to wait quite a bit to get our drinks. Food was fast and good. Loved the citrus olives, and the peanuts. The avocado kale dip was different, we liked it however and I never say this it needed salt, but we couldn’t get any salt. I think if the house made chips had salt on them it would have been great. I will order it again. We split the burger, and it was pretty. The fries were those shoe string frozen numbers– gross. Really!!! The burger was flame cooked, which I don’t like, tasted charcolly. I think they need to step up their fry game. Oh! I also tried their popper — $ 2. It was the size of my pointer finger, tasty but to much money imo. Yes, I will return, and try the fish tacos, those looked amazing. I hope to add more stars to my review.

The ambience and staff are very casual, but attentive. The restaurant is clean and offers seating for large or small groups. The menu doesn’t offer many items. I had the brisket tacos with pickled cabbage and a tangy sauce. It was a party for my tastebuds!

Came here after a cousin’s wedding for ensuing shenanigans. Naturally after am abundance of drinking I get very hungry so I decided to try their chicken kielbasa. pls. I didn’t enjoy it at all. Their gin and tonic was lackluster. I’d probably try to find another place next time I come down to dt Portland.

It was our first time and it won’t be our last. There were 4 of us who have never been to the Red Star Tavern before and we couldn’t have been happier with the experience. The décor of this restaurant is very nice. Dark woods, beautiful lighting and very comfortable seating all worked well together. The food was outstanding. Everything we all ordered was excellent. The menu was smaller than I expected but what they choose to put on that menu is done very well. I had the celery root purée and ipa braised brisket served with bacon braised collard greens, crispy russet potatoes and vinegar BBQ. WOW! Fork tender meat and the collard greens were absolutely delicious. The drinks we choose were honestly some of the best I’ve ever had. You could tell our waiter, who I will get to in a moment, was proud of their mixologists and they have every reason to be. The«Red Star» signature drink and Lemon Drop were poured so perfectly you couldn’t detect alcohol in it at all… but believe me, it was in there! Amazing drinks. The desserts were good. I’m not going to gush over them because I want to try them again. The truth is we were so full I wasn’t really enjoying my dessert as much as I think I would have had I not gorged myself. They are, however, made very well and I’ll leave it at that. Lastly, the service. Evan was our server and he was an incredibly good server. I liken this server experience with something out of Vegas. Personable, knowledgeable, attentive and funny. He put this entire experience over the top for us. In addition, their support staff was very attentive. Our water glasses were never empty and I was impressed when I overheard a conversation between another customer and some other server when they requested they be seated in a different area. She couldn’t have been more accommodating. I’ve read some poor reviews about this place by other people and while I would never disagree with an opinion of a visit I didn’t experience myself, we couldn’t have had a better time. We’ll be back for sure.

9th time I have been here! Every time we are in Portland we come here. I had the brick chicken and the beet sauvie salad. Great flavored! I am not a whiskey fan but I had the curious Scotsman cocktail and I was very impressed. I really like the homemade honey wheat bread! We went to Higgins last night and it was just ok… Red Star Tavern is consistently wonderful food and great service. Don’t forget to ask for Evan as your server.

Food was cold and extremely overpriced. $ 4 for a horrible cup of brewed coffee??? Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. Won’t be back here.

Would have to say this place is mediocre. To start on a positive note… the interior is nice, classy, dark wood, meets bourbon and fireplace vibe, and decent dessert. On the contrary, our 1st drink took 15 minutes to get to us. Waiter did not check back in until we had to send a table buser to find him. Drinks were mixed with little to no care, flavorless, and entirely too strong in a bad way. Food order took over an hour to get to us, where half our table was served, then 10 minutes later the other half. Our dinner was over cooked dry chicken, with undercooked veges and squash, soaked in a broth that was oversalted. Salt also seemed to be the theme of the night… salads, dishes, and even the desserts were over salted. We might return for a bourbon, but not dinner again.

I really like this place, the service was excellent the place was clean and didn’t disappoint. I had a nice time here they took care of us at all times. The lavatories were well maintained I couldn’t complain. I didn’t eat here so I can’t comment on the food but everyone was pleasant and the environment was perfect. Probably my favorite place in PDX so far, that might change…

Red Star is a good place to get out of the weather and relax and refuel/warm up and it surprisingly kid-friendly. The bathrooms are pretty fancy schmancy with a nice changing table. This is a plus. We caught up with an old friend over a big pot of tea($ 4) and the server was very kind. We would return!

I liked this place, less for the food and more for the ambiance. Take the food comment with a grain of salt because I ordered the buckwheat pancakes and I have not had these in a long time and my memory could just not be what I thought. for pancakes, they were fine. For buckwheat pancakes, they didn’t taste like a heavier grain(versus ordinary buttermilk-type pancakes) and didn’t have an ‘oomph’ of flavor like I expected. As a side note, I am not disparaging their food in any way, it was good — just not what I expected. I also had a warm mocha and they were kind enough to add a twist of lemon at my request.(It works better on iced drinks in my experience but is still a a great flavor combo.) I went around 630am on a Friday morning. There was someone who beat me in somehow but the restaurant was pretty quiet although it did pick up considerably the closer it got to 730am. As a first, I actually took some notes on the restaurant because I wanted to tell you why you should go at least once. For me, it was reminiscent of the W hotel experience, a full sensory delight that quite surprised me. It started with the Cole Porter-ish, bluesy jazz playing overhead — fantastic breakfast music for that long luxurious and leisurely dining event. From there, I just kept noticing the little things: Impeccably dressed waiters Soft, glowy mood lighting yet bright enough to read by Glowing wood floors Rich wooden table set with an array of opposing yet complimentary dish and serviceware like pewter creamers, heavy silverware, crisp starched linens, deep green bottle glass glassware, leather seats with nubby upholstery and linen-like curtains, mirrors everywhere, meticulously laid out settings for things like orange juice pitchers and other serviceware, and dishes that somehow matched but weren’t a matching set. It was all very sensory — tactile, visual and auditory… the only thing that was missing was smell and I found that appealing in that I don’t like too many smells when I am eating. Everything was clean and the tables are spacious. The waiter took my cue and left me to my work while I was eating which made me very happy.

Meh, this place was okay. I had the tavern burger, which was very good but like many of the reviews I’ve seen the service was lacking. Our Waiter was nice enough but he seemed to favor parts or tables in the restaurant and was barely around. I’m Not very hard to please — keep my glass full and just make sure things are alright. I probably won’t come here agin. Also I noticed every table was given bread and he couldn’t be bothered to drop some off for us. This whole encounter was a little more annoying because it was my wife and mines anniversary and so I hoped it’d go a little smoother and be a special evening. It was just another day at a restaurant.

Great place to grab a bite. I always stay in the Hotel that is attached to this restaurant so it is natural to want to come to a close restaurant that is convenient to my hotel. The food here is always pretty good and the bar area is set up to be a social place to grab a drink. I always get the brick chicken. It is very moist and flavorful. Typically it comes with squash, but I think they just changed the side to something new. I am sure it is equally delicious. I have also had the cauliflower soup. It has a very warm flavor. Good for rainy days or fall nights. It is pureed so if you like your soup thick and with more texture, you may want to go with something else. I have also had the date bread dessert, which is also delicious. I have eaten here several times for breakfast, lunch, dinner and just to have some drinks while I relax by the bar. The Red Star Tavern fits all of these needs.

This was the most convenient place for Sunday brunch because we were staying at the Monaco, right upstairs. There was no wait. Actually, we stood a while before being seated because no one was at the front to seat us. We weren’t acknowledged until about 10 minutes later when a waiter noticed us and went to the kitchen to get the hostess. The restaurant is spacious and has a bar, so it would be a good place to come if you don’t want to wait anywhere else. We ordered the brioche french toast, house made granola, chorizo hash, and a side of potatoes. The french toast had a lemon taste that’s different and very good. The chorizo hash was also good. I would recommend those 2 plates. The greek yogurt for the house made granola was too warm. The fruits that came with it were refreshing though. Not bad for an on-the-whim brunch, worth a try!
