I coincidentally sat in a seat that gave me a view of the cooks. One of them had the young PDX look going on, and I thought to myself that he should prob wear a hair net to keep his hair out of the food. I got the waffle with the ginger butter and hey, guess what? There was a hair in the butter(see pic)! Yuk.

This was great! The bacon was the best I’ve ever had at a restaurant and that is what I always get. Everything was amazing. The atmosphere was quaint mixing modern with nostalgic & great background music. The prices were a bit high but overall fabulous.

Super groovy café. Went on Sunday after church and it wasn’t packed. Got right in and service was quick. The hot tea choices were great. Self service coffee and water station. Food was yummy. I had the French toast it was again yummy. Staff was very friendly and on top of refilling my tea pot and what not.

This place is kind of a giant meh. The menu is pretty limited, and although I liked my Belgian waffle, it tasted just like the Belgian waffles I make at home. No veggie/vegan meat options, and the bacon was super salty to the point of being inedible. Coffee and mimosa, as well as service were excellent. I like a few more unique options for brunch food and this place just didn’t fit the bill. If, however, you hate waiting for brunch and want a solid meal I would definitely recommend this place.

J and M is a perfect place to go for breakfast if you don’t want to wait in line. Everything on the menu is super fresh and delicious. Service is usually OK. Great coffee that’s all self-serve which is actually kind of welcome once in a while. You get to pick your own mug off a coffee tree full of unique mugs. The jam here is super good as is the breakfast plate.

Really, an incredible breakfast. My boyfriend and I shared the chorizo scramble and the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were fresh and flavorful, the gravy had chunks of sausage, the potatoes had a crispy layer all around them! Such a good dish. The chorizo scramble was a big helping of fluffy eggs with bits of yumminess folded in. Very good, definitely recommend for breakfast/brunch. Oh God how could I have forgotten about the Irish coffee and bloody Mary??? They were both tremendous. The Irish coffee was strong for me, with an excellent cream on top. I loved the bloody Mary though, perfectly balanced and great spices made it an especially flavorful and delicious drink.

Service was great, choose your own mug for coffee and refill your own water. I had the breakfast burrito was delicious. Bf had the scrapple and eggs, was a little weird with the polenta pork mix. Jam on toast is amazing here freshly made. If you’re not feeling comfortable with some of the more original options here, go with basic options.

One of my favorite breakfast cafes! I’ve been coming here for over ten years but sporadically. Every time I come I remember that I need to come more often. Best garden scramble around! Love it being a little off the beaten path… you have to know to go and so worth it! Extracto coffee while you wait. Great for dining solo… diner style seats at a bar if you not feeling for a traditional table. So glad this café has stayed in business through the years.

This place is pretty dull. In a city full of great breakfast places, there are not many reasons to go to the J and M. There is never a line. If you happen to be with people who refuse to wait for breakfast, take them here. They will soon learn why most ‘no line’ places can’t draw a crowd. The coffee cup tree seems to be super popular but they still charge you $ 2.60 for pouring your own coffee. The food is very average. I haven’t had anything I liked. There are only a few meatless options and they are so boring. The J and M will not blow your mind. It will just be food and self serve coffee without a line.

The staff can be a bit edgie— serving the public isn’t easy— maybe they could try a teenie bit harder– having gotten the negative out of the way– the food here is amazing– the ambiance is nice– and the eggs are cooked just right very consistently– keep up the quality food!!! And I’ll forgive a small attitudes because I have sympathy for people who serve the American public– which can be overly demanding and down right demeaning…

The coffee mugs, the servers, the scrapple. Oh my! So good. Thanks for being there! I recommend getting a side of scrapple regardless of what you order. If you love pork and sweet and salty things, you’ll love it. I am always wanting more regardless of how much I eat.

Great little spot. Relaxing, but quick service. Delicious Bloody Mary. Might have even seen an important politician there. Very Portland, in the right way.

We came here on a Friday morning around 8. The food is really lovely, and I love the atmosphere. The menu selections for breakfast are ever so slightly limited, but the quality is definitely there. My eggs were cooked to perfection and the raspberry jam was insanely good. The breakfast potatoes were not bad, though the only super flavorful parts were the crispy bits. The bacon was tasty, but very very salty. The price was okay for the quality, if perhaps a little on the high side. We enjoyed sitting outside with our little dog.

A beautiful, breezy slice of Sunday solitude. It’s sunny and the wind weaves in and out of the windows. A red brick café, not too crowded, a friendly host as you glide to your table and join some old friends. Take a deep breath of the cool, summery day, grab a dark, deep cup of coffee from one of the cups hung on the wall. Conversation, musings, interesting people. A plate of potatoes with gooey cheese, red salsa and sour cream appears. Delicious! To your left, a beautiful bowl of fruit with yogurt. In front of you, a delectable Mediterranean scramble with potatoes and toast. Amble out later to a scene filled with people, dogs, community, trees waving in the wind… Was it all a dream? No, it was J and M.

This is the best place ever. My ex and I used to go there almost every weekend, although these days I only get there once a month. The place is very unpretentious, and the staff are friendly. This is a perfect place to eat, relax, read the paper, converse, for hours. The bacon is thick and delicious. The seasonal scrambles are always amazing, as are the special waffle toppings. I’ve never had the burrito, but people say it is good. The scrapple is awesome. Secret: You can order a half waffle!

I’ve been here twice now and have gotten the same thing both times, the brunch salad; the second time I added a side of grilled crispy polenta. The brunch salad is fantastic! It’s light and has a lot of flavor, especially because of the thick bacon bits. The polenta is great, too — lots of flavor and crispy :) What I really love about this place is that I’ve never waited to be seated and both times I was able to sit outside. I like the self-serve coffee and the very friendly staff. Parking is super easy, too. Good place for brunch! Enjoy!

My wife and I went here on our way out of Portland. We were traveling on bikes, so asked if we could sit outside(table was dirty) so we could keep our eyes on them. No problem, they said! Quickly went and cleaned the table for us, and out we were in the lovely sun! Ordered some cocktails! Bloody Mary was awesome, said my wife, and my Stockholm Syndrome was amazing(which sounds weird writing… but it was Applejack, coffee, demerara syrup and Chartreuse with some obviously home whipped cream, which was the best because it wasn’t sweet… just creamy!) They made a mistake in which they had to seat us inside(which ruined the point of sitting outside for our bikes — delicate, precarious packing we didn’t want to un-do). But man, I’ll tell you… wonderful customer service in them doing everything they could to make it up to us. Seriously, they went well out of their way to make things right, which is worth a 5-star review alone. Oh, and their food? Amazing. Two Eggs and bacon with como-toast(haha!) and homefries. Totally filling. Nice thick bacon, too. My wife got the breakfast burrito to make up for an awful burrito we had the night before. The artfully crafted deliciousness more than washed away the night of burrito mediocrity. I believe our server’s name was Sydney. She was nice. Didn’t catch the gentleman’s name who was so helpful with our bikes, but he was rad, too. Coffee mug tree is also great. Lovely lighting inside. Will keep coming back!

Helloooooo, convenient bacon breakfast pickup! Just imagine my «Sunday morning gettin’ it done» dance as we collected orders from our conference support staff, placed the order, and pranced on over for the take-out order. A snap from the convention center(~12min walk). Egg/tofu scramble — good! The special(scramble with brussel sprouts, bacon, fontina, hashbrowns, and toast) — quite good! Breakfast burrito(ok with corn toritias rather than flour — no problem!). Fruit bowl with yogurt — yumalicious. The only calamity with our breakfast experience: inconsistent bacon doling(three side orders of bacon one day = 7, while 1 order = 4 the next day… that’s not right, man). Friendly staff, opens at 8am for brunch(SUPER popular spot on Saturdays), and pretty dang darn good breakfast… WINWINWIN. Recommend calling ahead, but certainly a great choice for those working the convention center on those early mornings.

Let’s start with the negative: chilled pats of butter. Ok, that’s enough. This is my kind of place: bottomless cups of good coffee, airy, music you can barely hear, and great french toast. Real syrup? It tasted like it. My friend and I were able to sit for over an hour and enjoy our late breakfast over conversation. The baquette french toast had a certain spicy flavor that I loved & was cooked perfectly. Terrific meal.

In a town where breakfast/brunch seems to involve planning and preparation, J & M made it easy for us to walk up and find a table. If you sit outside you may need to wait a good ten minutes before anyone notices you or get their attention. I had the J&M plate and fresh squeezed OJ. Hubs had the French toast and serve-yourself coffee(same goes for water). My favorite was the local thick and crispy bacon. I asked for a side of salsa and it was aight. Fresh but not very spicy. A few things I noticed at the bottom of their menu: cash only, 18% grat for parties of six or more, «please disable your cell phone’s ring and refrain from wearing strong fragrances». Lololol Portland, you crack me up!
