I couldn’t be more excited to have Hoplandia open in the Marvel 29 building. I live upstairs and love having great beer just a couple steps away. The layout feels a bit tight but no worse than most places. I love the look of the countertops. St. John’s is changing and Hoplandia is on the leading edge.

The owner is one of the most knowledgeable beer proprietors in the city, and this bar reflects it. They have 10 rotating taps of some of the tastiest, sometimes harder-to-find beers(and ciders) around town. Last time I was in they even had Bourbon County Rye on tap, along with super-fresh IPAs, and a sour or two thrown in to boot. Their fridges are stocked with some pretty impressive options, too. The staff is super nice and very helpful, happy to explain and suggest anything. The space doesn’t feel very lived-in yet but they did just open. Three ginormous televisions give you plenty of viewing options(including hockey!). A pizza place is going in next door, plus there’s a great taqueria nearby, and the food can be brought in. All in all you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better source of quality beer in St. Johns.

I was not too impressed. It felt very cramped and uncomfortable. They just opened so I hope they can still make some adjustments. It just felt so sterile to me, no character at all. The beer was good, but I think they would benefit from hiring an interior designer.

Decent place but docked a star for the ugly flat screen menus. Chalk, bro. Chalk.

Unique and rare stuff in the cooler, nice new fun place to watch Timbers games! Nice feel, smart staff, friendly environment. It’s crowded because it’s awesome! Well done!

I was blown away by the kindness of these folks. The staff had a great recommendation and they were right on the money! They surprised us by opening a bottle to sample and asking US what we liked. You can tell they care about their customers. You will like this place if you prefer rare, hard to find beers, beertenders that know their beer/cider(and also wine… try the Malbec, it’s great!) and if you’re a sports fan. Timbers/blazers/seahawks games on the large TVs behind the bar. What really matters to me though? This place is CLEAN with an upscale interior. It was a packed house when I came and these guys were still cleaning tables. I brought in my own food and thoroughly enjoyed myself. In St. Johns, it’s a welcomed addition. Excited for things to come and bravo!

Small little beer store with about 10 unique microbrews on tap. The layout inside felt a little uncomfortable and didn’t really flow. Then, one my biggest small complaints, lighting. The harsh white fluorescent lighting was not conducive to just hanging out & chilling, but the staff seemed friendly and intelligent so we stayed for one. Hope they can incorporate a little more ‘st. John’s feel’ into the mix & get some local artists to increase the homeliness feel.

They had a chance and they blew it. They had a fresh chance to create a dry, warm pub to relax in and, instead, they created something that is cold with marble surfaces and walls that make the place look like a public restroom. This place is like a bar in an airport that is designed to make you want to drink and move on. What is the point of the harsh over-head halogen lamps? They feel like interrogation lamps. As for the beer — sure, great beer. But great beer is easy to find in this town. I want to drink beer in a COMFORTABLE place. This place has the charm of a public urinal. They goofed on this one. Better things are to come for the new St. Johns.

Chill new neighborhood bar! Super friendly owners and bartenders, as well as a small but interesting list of beer and wine. It really felt so personal and like they would remember me as a patron, and this is only after one night! Everyone should come check them out, as they more than deserve to thrive in St Johns!
