Ive had authentic vegan soul food & this was pretty mediocre. I wanted to love this place. I came excited to visit, all the way from Vegas. I ordered one of the burritos because it had almost everything in it. I was with 6 other vegans who between us all ordered everything off the menu… & none of us felt compelled to finish our food. It wasnt horrible, but everything just needed more seasoning, more sauce on the mac n cheese, all our sweet potato fries were burnt, hush puppies had a great crunch but inside wasn’t exciting… I liked the soy curls, but there wasn’t a lot of it in the burrito & if you like steamed greens my friend said they were good. Probably wouldn’t go back.

I absolutely love this vegan place. Can’t go wrong with anything here. Thanks for existing Homegrown Smoker.

Ask for fresh fries. These tested a day old and were inedible. Hush Puppies were hard and couldn’t eat those either.

You have to try the Carolina Chicken Sandwich. It was delicious! Right amount of spicy, and great blend of other seasonings making a very flavorful sandwich!

Amazing. The food is delicious here. I had the BBQ plate, with tempeh ribs and smokes tofu. Both delicious and well crafted. The coleslaw wasn’t my favorite, it seemed to be a bit bland compared to everything else, but was a nice crunchy addition to the rest of the meal. I also had the crown jewel, the Macnocheeto. A whopping 2lb burrito(maybe more) with Mac and Cheese, soy curls, beans, and BBQ sauce inside. Definitely the item to get if you’re going.

Really good vegan bbq and huge portions. I found it to be a tad pricey, but you do get a lot of food for your money.

I’m not from Portland so when I looked up vegan in my area and saw barbecue I got really excited to try this place. I got here about 10 minutes after they opened and there were already about 8 other people who had ordered before me, which speaks of their popularity. I was going to order the sides plate but I saw their special, spicy tofu melt and changed my mind… ANDBOYAM I GLAD. I’m sure the other meal would’ve been delicious too but this sandwich is by far my favorite vegan meal I’ve ever consumed EVER. I don’t really review places too often but I had to give these guys 5 stars. Amazing food, that does take a little while(about 20 minutes for mine) BUT the quality is more than enough of a reason to wait the time and eat this amazing food. This place makes me wish I lived in Portland.

Recently visited Portland and came across a vegan BBQ food truck. I had the Machooneto. Wow! It was by far the most amazing burrito I’ve ever had! Wish I could ring them to California with me. The owner was really cool, he even gave me an ice tea while I waited. Can’t wait to come back

So, so good. We made a trip out to NE just to check this place out and I’m very happy we did. I had the ribs platter which comes with six tempeh BBQ pieces smothered in BBQ sauce, hush puppies and a yummy sauce. For sides I ordered the mac nocheese and beans. My husband ordered the special which was a sausage with buns and lots of toppings, he also got a side of the chard. It was all amazing. The tempeh was probably my favourite out of everything. The beans had a great sweetness to them and the mac nocheese tasted like tons of noosh(yes!!!). The chard was awesome and perfectly cooked. I only had a few bites of the sausage in buns, but I enjoyed that as well. My only hesitation for giving them a solid five stars is the price. It felt a bit steep for me, but I will definitely be coming back to try more things on the menu. When I grabbed our food to bring to our table, heads turned. That’s some serious vegan grub. PDX needs more of this.

Fantastic food! Really great options and sides even if you are only a part time vegan. We had the ribs, beans and greens and they had great flavor, texture and spice to them. Seriously well done.

Drove 500 miles to vacation in Portland with this place being a high priority. Did not disappoint. I already want to go back. BBQ soy curls with vegan Mac no cheese are a must.

I had high expectations of this spot thanks to all the buzz. I enjoyed it but don’t think it quite lived up to it’s 4.5 stars buzz. My friend and I split the tempeh ribs, soy curls sandwich, sweet potato fries, hush puppies and mac and cheese here. Tempeh ribs: Tempeh is hard to work with. It’s usually very dry and this one wasn’t dry so points for that. It didn’t really remind my friend of ribs and the flavor was just alright though. Mac and cheese: We both liked this and thought they did a great job with it! Soy curls sandwich: Our favorite item and the texture did remind me of chicken. Good flavor! Sweet potato fries: Also good. Hush puppies: Good sauce. All in all, I’m glad we came. It was an unusual concept and we had to see it for ourselves. Woo!

Definitely a must try if you want some vegan comfort food. I stopped here multiple times when I was in Portland a few weeks ago. I got the combo plate so I could try everything. Had the tempeh ribs, chik’n strips, Mac n cheez, and alternated between the collard greens and coleslaw. Everything was really tasty and definitely satisfied my cravings. I’m always fearful that I’ll never get enough food at new places, but the portions were heaping and I was left completely satiated. My only request is for more spicy options. They have hot sauce on the condiment bar, but I’d love to have an option for some spicier bbq sauces. That’s just me, however. Aside from the food, the service was great and I appreciated the later hours. Five stars. This is my new Portland spot.

After reading a review from Eater, we decided to check out the hype. We got the Combo Platter with soy curls, tempeh ribs, collard greens, hush puppies and the mac and cheese. They were all amazing! The smokey tang of the soy curls, slightly sweetness of the ribs were awesome! Totally recommend getting the combo to try a bunch of things. We were a group of 3 and the amount of food was definitely enough.

It took me a while, but I finally made it to Homegrown Smoker when I was in town for the PDX Vegan Beer and Food festival. When I found out they weren’t going to be able to make the fest, I made a point to stop at their cart the day before. I really don’t think you can go wrong here. But if you’re unsure what to get, I recommend the platter so you can try a few different items. The BBQ tempeh ribs, mac and cheese, and hush puppies all blew me away. They also were soooo filling. The combo platter should really be shared by two, or eaten throughout the day at least. Though it’s not anywhere near healthy, homegrown smoker is just too good to resist.

We only had a few days in Portland but on our«must try» list was Homegrown Smoker. Even though we were still full from brunch we squeezed in a trip to the little BBQ cart before our flight home and I’m so glad we did. I shared the Rib Platter with my friend. It came with smoked tempeh«ribs», hushpuppies, remoulade, and the two sides we picked were mac-nocheese and stewed collard greens. I absolutely loved BBQ tempeh. It had a great smoky flavor and it was piping hot! I had to let it cool a bit to take a bite. As far as the mac-nocheese, I prefer a creamy sauce and this was a bit dry so it was just okay for me. Really enjoyed this cart and would definitely come back again!

When I decided to become a vegetarian four years ago, my tastebuds turned on me. «How dare you!?» I would often hear them screaming while frying up tofu scrambles. My animal-loving, healthnut wannabe morals were super stoked at the decision I had made, but I am from the South and in the South, we appreciate meat. When I discovered Homegrown Smoker on Postmates, I immediately began sobbing sweet, southern, Reese Witherspoon tears of joy. Not even a week ago I was explaining to a co-worker that if I were to say I missed one thing about eating meat, it would be baby back ribs. Today I learned that there really is a god. I ordered the Combo plate and had it delivered(thanks Postmates!) for an absolutely ridiculous price that I won’t share with you because it’s so embarrassing, but I will tell you that it was worth every single penny. To put the smoky flavor of cooking flesh back into the mouth of a vegetarian without actually force-feeding them meat is a wonderful, wonderful thing. For the Combo I chose the BBQ soy curls, the«ribs», cole slaw, and hush puppies. Yep, you read that right — hush puppies! Do you westerners even know what those are? They’re fried balls of happiness is what they are, and they are a staple of any obese southern folk’s diet. All of these things were crazy good. The soy curls had a really nice texture — which is the most difficult thing to deal with when trying different meat substitutes — and a really yummy sweet, smoky flavor. The«ribs» were equally delicious, smoky, and sweet. The cole slaw had a nice spice to it that paired well with the meal and the hush puppies were, well, hush puppies. They were perfect, sent me right back into pig-pickin’ nostalgia. It was served with some yellow, magic yum yum sauce that added a nice tang to anything that was dipped in it. I mean, I’m really running out of good things to say here but I can’t say enough! If you’re a vegetarian from the south, specifically, and you aren’t eating here regularly, then what are you doing with your life? Seriously, get it together. If you are in the general Portland area and aren’t eating here regularly, it’s time for a self-evaluation. Brilliant flavors, brilliant execution of what I would think is really hard to imitate, and they participate in local delivery services. These are the most well-deserved 5 stars I’ve ever handed out.

Holy Sh*! balls batman, did I just stumbled upon some super legit vegan bbq? Yes. Yes I did. Portland where have you been my whole life. There is a shit load of vegan variety in this city. I tried as many places as I could but still was unable to visit all the spots. Homegrown BBQ was one of the must try’s for me. So I ordered a combo plate. Plate consisted of mac & cheese, chipotle coleslaw, bbq soy curls & tempeh ribs with some hush puppies. Simply incredible concept this place has going on. I took this plate to go, ate it up later while I was at the beach. A few friends of mine meat eaters mind you tried out some of the grab & they almost ended up eating most my food! They said the food was extremely tasty too. Food was not over powering or salty by any means, perfectly seasoned BBQ. The stand is in a food stand central area. Not exactly sure the name of the lot. Lot consisted of multiple food stands, all different varieties of food. There are plenty of tables around, most tables are covered. Service was quick & staff was friendly. Food was incredible. Now since I live in Texas, or BBQ central I need a vegan BBQ joint in my life. Or maybe ill just move to Portland. Well check this place out for some good BBQ. Vegan or not, food will not disappoint.

OHYEAH! Hush puppies! You didn’t have to say much more to get me to eat here. It was a beautiful day. I found a vegan food cart. And, I was ordering hush puppies! Could life POSSIBLY be any better? Oh, yes, it could — I was in Portland, Oregon(put a bird on it!). This area had about 10 food carts. I ordered non-meat(vegan) BBQ ribs and the hush puppies. The ribs were really good and kinda of sweet/sour. The hush puppies were OUTSTANDING. It was a lot of food for a small price. There are plenty of tables all around in a covered area. The food carts are pretty-much in a parking lot, and it was clean, and friendly and the people were all pleasant. There were a lot of recycle bins there next to the food carts, and I like seeing that. Coming from a non-eco-friendly town, I SOMUCH appreciate Portland and its dedication to being eco-friendly. All good. No complaints. If I had to say one thing negative, the hush puppies were just a tad on the spicy side. I don’t like any spice at all, so what I considered spicy may not be to someone else. And, let me tell you, it didn’t stop me from devouring them!

Really impressive vegan BBQ food truck. I come here every time I am in Portland and have never been disappointed. The variety plate is a good value-for $ 14 you get two choices of protein and two sides, plus 2 hush puppies. You MUST try the seitan ham, chipotle slaw, and BBQ soy curls. Excellent flavors without being overly salty. I found the hush puppies to be really bland, and the Mac n cheese was a little bit too nutritional yeasty for my taste. The food here is VERY heavy-definitely not something I could eat everyday. Service was very friendly and helpful with suggestions. You must try this place if you are in Portland.
