This is the worst BTH I’ve ever been to. I’ve been to about 5 Big Town Hero locations in Oregon. They are very slow, it is very dirty on the inside and staff is incredibly rude. I went in on November 9, 2012 with my club card all stamped for a free 12″ sub. The person behind the counter said it was not good for this location. Yes, each BTH has their own stamp card good for that location only. Stupid, isn’t it? The store address was stamped on the back, which confused me as to why it wouldn’t be good at this location. I asked for a manager who said my punches were used at a different location. After explaining that I know the concept behind each card is different for each location he said their punch is smaller than the ones on my card. I finally left without eating an overpriced Subway sandwich and went a block over to Jimmy Johns. NEVERVISITTHISLOCATION. WORSTBIGTOWNHEROEVER. EDIT: This BTH is now closed. Serves them right.

If you are familiar and like Big Town Hero sandwiches, you might be disappointed in this place. This location is disappointing, compared to other locations. Mainly because it’s so run down. It makes you wonder about the food. It’s too bad because it would make a convenient lunch location for many.

If you’re going to Big Town Hero, go for one of the traditional sandwiches– the BLT is my favorite for the surplus of mayo and bacon(a perfect combination of unhealthy fats to keep you at your best). Unfortunately, I tried the reuben panini when I was there last– with turkey instead of the pastrami, due to my aversion to beef– and ended up with a nasty mess of tastelessness heated to melting. There was no 1000 island dressing, braised cabbage instead of the tasty sauerkraut, and I ended up throwing it away rather than abuse my tastbuds any further. I will be back for the artery-clogging masterpieces of old, but *shiver* I need to have a real Reuben first.

If you do a direct comparison with BTH and Subway, Hero will win. It’s definitely better, but it isn’t exactly on par with Jersey Mike’s, which is the sandwich chain I judge all others by. I would probably give them a higher star rating is the sandwiches were a little cheaper, I just don’t think you get a whole lot for your dollar here. This location seems a tad dingier than others, but the service was fine and the sandwich I had was consistent with other BTH locations. I would definitely recommend coming in over eating at Subway, but you can expect to spend more.

I hadn’t eaten at Big Town Hero for a couple of years so I thought I’d stop in and see how it was doing. Well, it hasn’t changed a whole lot. Most of their sandwiches are overpriced, at least compared to what you get at similar eateries like Subway. They have some panini options that I don’t recall from before(though maybe they’ve always had them and I never noticed it before, who knows…) so I decided to try their Reuben panini which was only $ 6.25. The bread was ‘ok’, kind of flavorless but it definitely did what bread is meant to do… provide a vehicle for options. The pastrami was actually not too bad, kind of mid-grade grocery store meat. The cheese was pretty standard swiss. The kraut though was not right… it was way sweet and not what I expected and I could hardly taste their thousand dressing that they put on it. Essentially, I doubt I’ll come back here as there are both way better Reubens in PDX(obviously) and there are cheaper and tastier sandwich shops around. Period.

came in to kill time before the library opened… the gentleman working there was friendly and talkative which was cool… I got a simple 8inch egg and chipotle mayo sandwhich… man was it good… the bread was the best I’ve had in a long time… egg and mayo was a great combo… I’d totally come here again since I was happy with both the food and the cost…

Big town hero is the worst chain sandwich shop I have ever experienced. I live half a block away and feel sorry for all the people I see eating here. First the sandwiches are not cheap and for the price the ingredients should be fresh. Nope. It reminded me of school lunch food. The pre-made sandwich plastic wrapped. Of all the other great eateries on this block your far better off choosing one of them. And if not there’s a subway 3 blocks away that is much cheaper.

Let’s say you went to Subway so frequently that you eventually got to know the staff. And that by knowing the staff so well and being buddy-buddy with them, they always put on extra helpings onto your sandwich. That’s what Big Town Hero is. Except their sandwiches cost $ 10 in a combo, their staff provide quite possibly the most neutral treatment you’ll ever get, and their only saving grace above Subway is it’s not just the sauce that makes each sandwich taste different… and their bread isn’t flavorless. I can’t be enthusiastic about a visit to Big Town Hero, but I also can’t say it’s a bad eatery. All I can honestly say is that you have to be damn sure you want a $ 10 sub sandwich when there’s $ 4 – 8 competition in their 3 block radius, including Subway.

With all the Moms and all the Pops in Portland, why would you eat at a place like this? Cause its cheap and you are a college student? Cause you like MAYONNAISE? do you know what mayo is made out of? oh, you don’t care? okay. The only thing that is sensible about hippies is their food choices. Have you ever eaten Ital? Have you ever listened to Bob Marley? Turn off Legend and seek out some Ital food. I think there is an Ital cart in downtown Portland, but I could be mistaken. see hippies sometimes have recipes to share(they call it a POTLUCK): this long haired knucklehead makes far better bread than quiznos and big town hero combined:
