Yum isn’t a size. Regardless if you call something venti or sell it through a huge MegaCo, size really(at least this time) doesn’t matter when it comes to flavor. True beauty comes in all sizes and so does true yum. An Xuyen Bakery is teeny tiny selling a colossal collection of yummy fresh bread, pastries, French macarons, banh mi, cookies, tarts, Vietnamese dishes, cream puffs, meat pies, flan, and more. It’s the kind of place you could pass a 1000 times and never know the sweet goodness inside … except by the line of people waiting to order or the growing number of Unilocal reviews telling you to go … because the yum at An Xuyen is monumental. The small size and mystery of being a Vietnamese bakery may keep people away, but for my wife and me, our enormous love for An Xuyen has reached grande status. The French bread is fresh. The tarts are sweet. The lemongrass pork is luscious. Since An Xuyen Bakery is so small there is no place to eat except outside on two small picnic tables, get your yumminess to go … cause it’s not the size, mate, it’s how it tastes.

Probably one of my favorite spots in town. I was born in raised in Foster/Powell neighborhood, and am so glad this gem has thrived. I have ventured out a lot and ordered quite a few things, and have never complained about my item/order. All fresh, absolutely fantastic. I must confess, I always get a BBQ pork banh mi sandwich, because I think I’m addicted to them. No matter what I pick up, I also have one of those.

Definitely cute. I love small shops like this owned by Ma and Pa’s, ma and pa and uncles and or ma and pa’s that make their children work after school… or something like that. An Xuyen has a nice array of sugary sweets, breads and Vietnamese snacks. The lady behind the counter was absolutely a delight. She was very very happy. The vietnamese sandwich I would say could have been better. The meat to me was a bit wet so it made the sandwich a bit soggy. The flavor was alright. If you are looking for Vietnamese desserts and want a good sweet this is the place to be.

Wow, probably my favorite spot in Portland. I moved across the street from An Xuyen over a year ago, and have been visiting this place at least every other day since then. Their steam bao is incredible(especially the BBQ and red bean ones), fluffy dough and perfectly rich inside. I’ve never had a better bahn mi than here. My personal favorite is the pork lemongrass sandwich. Everything in the sandwich complements each flavor perfectly, and you won’t find better bread. Their iced coffee is off the chain, the sesame seed balls are incredible, who am I kidding everything the owners touch turns to gold. Hands down my favorite place in Portland, you won’t find better prices or quality. Authentic, delicious, and seriously addicting. Next Thanksgiving I know what I’m saying I’m grateful for at the dinner table… ITSTHATGOOD

If you are looking to try some good sandwiches check out this place! The sticky buns and sandwiches are really really good! I was visiting Portland and my friend told me to go check this place out. Very inexpensive($ 3) per sandwich and sticky buns are about $ 1.50! Worth every penny and more

Amazing sandwiches at ridiculously low prices. Lots of tasty looking sweets too, but I have not tried any yet. The service is counter service inly with just a couple picnic tables outside for warmer days but the point here is for take away. Have had 4 or 5 different sandwiches here, all are delicious.

11:30am @ 9Dec15. Good service. Take away. Very reasonable prices. Banh Mi — bbq pork and shredded pork. Both were good; crunchy and tasty. Samples of sponge cake a nice touch and good tasting. Will return.

The An Xuyen Bakery is a fantastic cultural experience. They have sandwiches, pastries, beverages and more. A few tables are on the outside, though the one on the inside is mainly meant for displaying a book which shows how they can make a cake. Going here was a treat. My barbeque pork banh mi was three dollars. The sandwich came out within three minutes after ordering. It was crispy and the ingredients bode well together. The mix of vegetables and the tenderness of the meat was apparent. It also had a crunch. For dessert, I had the savory not sweet treat of a meat pie, a meatball was at the center. Perhaps, this can be a thing to consume often.

For some reason I was really craving bao this morning, so we looked up «Best Bao» on Unilocal and ran across this place. We aren’t in SE Portland very often, but decided to give it a try since we had no plans for the day, and it sounded really good. Pretty easy to find at the corner of Foster and 53rd(next to Foster Burger and 2 doors down from Devil’s Point). I guess I pictured a much larger place in my head, but it was tiny. They have one small table for two in the corner so I wouldn’t plan on eating there if you have that in mind. The did have two picnic tables out front, but it was too cold to eat outside. We got the BBQ Pork Bao and a Shredded Pork Bahn Mi sandwich, and both were really good. The bao was so good, I ordered a second. The BBQ pork was slightly sweet and the bun was light and fluffy — just perfect. I don’t eat bao very often, but these were delicious. The sandwich was also really good — baguette was crunchy on the outside and filled with succulent shredded pork, pâté, fresh carrots, cilantro and a crunchy pickle. So, so good. The folks that work there were all really nice and we didn’t have to wait long at all. There was also a steady stream of customers, so it filled up fast. We will definitely be back the next time we are in that area, or I’m just craving a really good bao.

I love eating here! The sandwiches are . People say that the banh mi isn’t «authentic», but I don’t care! The flavors are great, jalapeños and vegetables are fresh, and they have an excellent meat to bread ratio. Plus the price is unbeatable. The last time I went in, I ordered 12 sandwiches and fruit tarts for my office. All 12 sandwiches were equal in terms of quality. Everyone loved them which was upsetting because I wanted some leftovers to take home!

So I have been back a couple of times and I am now a fan. Certainly, there are some issues with some of the sandwiches. But the #13, Lemongrass Pork Bahn Mi has been consistently awesome of late. Today they had a very nice man tending the place and so the whole experience has improved. Keep it up!

Soft, crispy bread, refreshing pickled vegetables, a solid slather of pâté, and vietnamese ham… This place has the best banh mi sandwhiches in portland! I usually get the combo — Sandwhich + Vietnamese coffee. You can’t go wrong with their sponge cakes! It’s super soft and moist — and tastes amazing every time. When I crave a savory snack that’s not a full sandwhich, I get the meat pie — puff pastry with a meatball inside. It always hits the spot.

It’s a small bakery tucked in far southeast which has great tasting and reasonably priced pastries, bahn mi, steam buns and boba shakes. We usually get at least 6 – 7 different kinds of pastries and they are all so good! On top of that they don’t put a hole in my wallet with $ 5-$ 6 price tags at other bakeries in the city! Plus if they say a blueberry muffin it means it is loaded with blueberries. no skimping here. The owners are super friendly and I love the sweet lady at the cash register. We even bought lots of bread for our at home bahn mi party with friends. The bread was so fresh and perfect crispy from outside but soft from the inside. In my heart I don’t want this place to become super popular because that’s when a lot of them go downhill. This will be my go to place for whenever I am craving pastries on a lazy Saturday morning.

Only a couple chairs for sitting inside but more outside. Not here for the baked goods that take up much of the space, from plain to very fancy. They have a good selection of sandwiches and I plan on coming back. Long time fan of best baguette, but this may change my mind. i like the shorter wider baguette, on the combination bahn mi the meat was fresh and ample, all worked together. also had a steamed pork bun that was very good, some heat in the pork. friendly service,

Thank to Unilocal for helping me discovered a whole new place to get Banh mi. First of all, it’s spelled B-A-N-H M-I, not bahn mi. You can say either sandwiches or say it right– Banh mi. The store seems very clean to me and has great decorations. I got a pork belly sandwich + add pâté. Gosh, it was soooooo good! The pickles were carrot and daikon, cilantro and 2 slices of belly pork were put into my banh mi. Just just awesome after first bite. Bought their mung bean moon cakes and haven’t tried them.

Went in for snacks and treats, and after eating a #13 sandwich and a BBQ bai. Freakin delish. I have 25 minutes to make it back for more treats. Two days later, we wake up with only one thing in mind. Well, one plan for starting the day anyway. Clothes on and down the street to get muffins and iced coffee,(described here by another reviewer appropriately as crack) and yes yes yes!!! Soft delicious blueberry muffins and now I can barely type on this little keyboard coffee. Good morning.

I have made trips to An Xuyen many times for their baguettes and cupcakes. I have been at An Xuyen during their busy hours with long line as well as during their non busy hour which is around 5 pm to closing. I have always had good experience and good customer service from them. Their baked goods are catered to a large based customers; there you find large quantity of Vietnamese and Chinese/Hong Kong baked goods such as banh cam, banh bao, cookies, cake rolls, moon cakes, raisin bread and… of course their famous banh mi., French baked goods such as French macarons, cream puffs, pâté chauds and baguettes. They also have many American baked goods such as blue berry muffins, variety of cupcakes and tarts. Normally, I came in during breakfast and lunch time; there were lines and many people were cramped into the little store front area. Today, I was at An Xuyen around 5 pm; I was the only customer there and also, there was not a lot of baked goods left. The owner was relaxed with only me; she was speaking Vietnamese to me and was being very Vietnamese. She said«beautiful person, buy all, there is not much left»; I replied«if I have money, I buy the whole store for her». Initially, I was there to get a baguette and a cupcake. I ended up with four baguettes, a French macaron and a cupcake. To sum up my review, An Xuyen’s customer service range from average to good, depending on how busy they are. An Xuyen’s baguette is one the best in Portland; the French macaron was one of the best I have eaten. It was very light, airy, crunchy and buttery tasting with a chewy meringue spread that was sweet but not too sweet. This is the second time I have their cupcakes. Their cupcakes are beautiful and delicious; I put them at the same level with other local bakeries that are known for their cupcakes. I have eaten cupcakes from St. Cupcakes on SE Belmont, cupcakes from Beaverton Bakery and many cupcakes from other well known American bakery.

What a gem of a spot! The food was delicious, unreasonably low prices and the counter service friendly and quick! What more could you ask for? Maybe a faaaat free sample of a delicious baked good! We tried the lemongrass chicken and BBQ pork bahn mi. Both were very flavorful, the veggies inside the sandwich were fresh and really, they were the perfect size. The pork bun was also dim sum grade delicious! If you’re looking for a great, cheap, fast, awesome, bomb ass lunch GONOW!

Lord all mighty, We have foundeth the Sandwith… ich. Some of you may well know that I am a sandwich hound. It’s true, sandos are bueno in my libro. That’s book in spanish –btw, look it up in the el diccionario… libro. So now that I’ve lost your attention, I will attempt to regain it WITH… A SANDWICH!!! Not any common peasant sandwich, but… wait, no, actually it is a common peasant sandwich. I am 0 for 0 with this review so far… Let me restart Bahn Mi !!! Yesssss! You take little french bread rolls, cut them longitudinally, and swab them with a sweet alioli then layer in sliced jalopeños and pickled julienned carrots & daikon radish along with fresh cilantro. Then add meats of choice –bbq pork, cold cuts(with patê), pork belly, lemongrass chicken, yadda, yadda, etc. Then eat. Most people know what the hell a Bahn Mí sandwich is but if you don’t then for Christ’s sake go get one and eat it then come back and finish reading this damn review. An Xuyen is also a bakery, as it is included in their business’s name –duh. So this means they have a lot of sweet pastries to choose from as well. Do us both a favor and try some out, they’re worth it. Also, the steamed buns are rock n rollin –get a bbq pork one. Enjoy eating these sandwiches. You’re welcome.

An Xuyen had been on my radar almost since I moved here. Yes, I love a good bahn mi and everyone I’ve met here(which really isn’t a whole lot of people thus far) have all made mention of the place. I believe my brother purchased some steamed buns from them once, but I hadn’t been in the place itself. I happen to be in the area by the post office and the bakery was open! I know that they provide pastries and breads for many of the Vietnamese grocery stores around PDX with many different choices. The place itself is rather small, but it seems like they cram a bunch of sweet treats in there. Gigantic cupcakes, pastry horns, cream puffs, cookies, cakes, steamed buns and a menu of sandwich options. I had the #1 bahn mi and got a bbq pork steamed bun. Both were very tasty, inexpensive and filling. I also got a double chocolate cream horn which I had to wait on, but it was worth it. Friendly staff, which I think might have only been two people at the time I was there. I need to get back there soon. Enjoy.
