This review is ONLY for De Sabor Peruano in the back of this Latino y Punto where they have a few Peruvian dishes on Saturdays. It is probably more deserving of 3.5 stars, but since I don’t have that option… they get 4. My experience with Peruvian food is limited to having a few meals at friends’ houses, one restaurant visit in NYC, and Antojitos Normita in Happy X on weekends in Lenexa. So, that’s what I will use as a barometer for my experience here. The seating is cramped and awkward at the back of this tiny grocer. It may seat abou 15 people. All the seats were taken when we got there, so we waited about 10 minutes for a spot. We sat kinda family-style at a larger table with another family. We ordered 4 of the half dozen or so available items: papas a la huancaina, lomo saltado, ceviche, and seco nortena de carne, which was the only entrée I’d never had and looked and smelled marvelous… but they were out! The papas a la huancaina wasn’t as good as I’ve had it; the lomo saltado was fine, but the kid prefers Norma’s; and the ceviche was more like the kind I’d had before. It was very good, but a much smaller portion than at Norma’s. All in all, I can’t wait to come back and try the seco. It’s really unfortunate that they only do this on Saturdays. The guy did say they were trying to do it more days, but he didn’t elaborate. I hope they’re able to expand the space as well.

I wouldn’t exactly call this place a carneceria, the meat case was super small and had just a few pieces of sketchy looking meat available. This reminded me of a super small convenience store, full of mostly candy and soda. I wouldn’t bother coming here again, nothing really of interest to shop for.

This market, in the same complex as the India Emporium and the Oriental Supermarket, has a small butcher shop and a somewhat sparse selection of Mexican groceries. There’s a sign in the window saying they have Peruvian products, but I didn’t see any. There was a good selection of dried chiles and other Mexican herbs and spices. Worth looking into if you’re also shopping at one of the other ethnic markets in this complex. They don’t take credit or debit cards. Cash or check only.
