Crepes Canaveral, a 5 star treasure, is gone. In its place is someone cooking perhaps the worst crepes in NY. Gone is the fresh fruit and whipped cream. Instead, they use jam, no whipped cream. No more crispy edged deliciousness, sparked with a surprising dash of pepper. Now the crepes are tasteless, soft to the point of almost raw. So sad.

Very disappointing. I use to love this place when it was hold by jc, now it’s terrible. New tenant is a jerk, crepes are bad, and prices are up. It is sadly that i’d recommend to avoid

I had an egg, mushroom, onion and cheese crêpe and it was heavenly. The man certainly knows his stuff. The savory buckwheat is buttered before having the egg spread in a circle with the yolk in tact. Mushrooms at first seemed overlooked– but when I tasted it it was the perfect texture. Onions were caramelized. Everything was very balanced. He asked me if I’d sitting or walking, and I told him walking and he said he’d spread yolk on the finish crêpe, fold it and cut it into pieces so that all of the flavor is evenly spread. It was delicious and 10 bucks so it was certainly worth it. Rumor has it he’s found a place with some seating… fingers crossed.

Freshest most satisfying crêpe I’ve ever tasted up til now. We tried the strawberry and whipped crème crêpe. The strawberries were sweet and refreshing, the crêpe was crispy and the whipped crème wasn’t too sweet. You can even see the guy make your crêpe through the little order window. He also chastised me for not ordering the crêpe with caramel(I turned him down when he asked), and asked whether it was ok if he added a little caramel on the side so I can try it. Smart man. It tasted amazing and I felt like an idiot for not getting caramel with my crêpe. Now if only they added ice cream to the crepes, then I would be here all the time.

Here, you’ll find a cute French man serving crepes out of some hole in the wall(literally, our crêpe was served out of a window). I’m very happy I came across crepes canaveral during last nights bar crawl. The owner sticks to the classic flavors, and I applaud him for that. The crêpe was delicious, and the strawberry and caramel flavors came together so beautifully. I’m definitely going out of my way to come back again.

FOOD — perfect. Crepes Canaveral is the real deal and almost perfect! The service was just a little slow on the day I was there but I wouldn’t hold that against them too much. Awesome stuff. Service – probably perfect normally, but just a little slow the day I was there.

Crepes were really good, but there is no chocolate or ice cream :( we ate at the bar, the bartender took our order and was a bit clumsy. Spilt burning coffee on my friend’s pants suit and was like ‘whatever’ Next time I will have them Togo

The best crêpe I’ve ever had(including Paris). JC is a french who actually knows how to make crepes. He especially made a plain sample for us with only butter and sugar to demonstrate how his crêpe doesn’t need anything else to be good. The place is hidden but you won’t regret the experience.

A wonderful crêpe experience. This is my first time having authentic French crêpe and it was breathtaking. The owner saw us waiting outside for a while and assured us that our crepes will be coming next. We ordered the butter and sugar crêpe and also the strawberry crêpe. The fruits were SO fresh! He added black peppers to the strawberries to bring out the flavor of the strawberries. They also made an extra butter and sugar crêpe and we got it for free. The crepes are pricey, but it’s homemade and the fruits are fresh :) The crêpe is made out of buckwheat, so it’s gluten free! The owner was so friendly, I would definitely recommend this place for all those crêpe lovers out there!

Pass by along st marks and saw this crepes station with a bar on the side. So me and my friends got curious and decided to get one for ourselves. I got the caramel crepes. Actually its just so plain and with caramel toppings and I love it. The taste of the crepes itself is really good. Employees are so friendly and talkative and its a plus. They take card payment and you can eat inside the bar but we dicided to eat outside in a bench. Love this place and well come back to try more!

Dropped by the weekend after their NYT review(we’d planned to stop by weeks ago and were nervous them dropping it would cause an unnecessary line, but it wasn’t bad) and of course Jean-Christophe opened at 4:15 or so, later even than the NYT piece claimed(and more than 75 minutes after Unilocal, its only web presence, claims). Friendly proprietor accepted the order of a $ 7 caramel beurre sale(sp?) and whipped cream(cash only), which was a great treat(skipped the Complete but watched it prepared in front of us looked great). FYINYT5⁄15 Recommended Dishes The complète(egg, ham and cheese crêpe); asparagus, egg and cheese crêpe; egg, ham, cheese and spinach crêpe; butter, lemon and sugar crêpe; strawberries, salted caramel and whipped cream crêpe.

This place is still as good as always. Super fresh ingredients prepared with love. God I wish I still lived close by to this place! When you go, don’t forget to ask if there are any off the menu specials. Currently Jean’s got an apple maple crêpe going as well as some blueberries for other sweet offerings. The strawberry caramel(with black pepper, homemade vanilla extract/sauce) and the plain butter and sugar ones still top my lists though. There was a short wait the Sat evening I dropped by — glad for Jean that business is up! This place is still the crêpe to beat in my book!

This place is a hole in the wall(kind of literally), but it’s the best kind. The owner is super friendly and was kind enough to give me a detailed run down of his menu. I believe I had a salted caramel crêpe with strawberries and it was the most mind-blowing, delicious crêpe I’ve ever had in my life. You can tell the owner takes a lot of pride in his crepes as well as customer service, which is fantastic. I’ll definitely be by again if I’m ever in the area.

THE most wonderful crêpe experience. I had never had authentic French crepes before and my mind was blown. I had no idea simple crepes without many toppings could be so delicious. The sweet Frenchman making them was so lovely too. So friendly, such good service. I like the vibe of the place too because it’s attached to a theater/pub. Very cozy and nice. I honestly don’t want to go anywhere else for crepes. HIGHLY recommended!

First of all, the place smells like the inside of an apple pie. Its so cozy and smells SO good in there, I never wanted to leave. JC, the more than lovable French chef, let us know that he was out of strawberries but that he’d just gotten some fresh asparagus so we should try it. We let him whip up an off the menu crêpe with bacon, cheese, asparagus, onions and topped off with a buttery sunny side up egg. My bf and I ate it in about 30 seconds. Then we had a salted caramel crêpe that we demolished in under 10 seconds. THEN we asked JC to makes us another of the first crepes. Ate that in about 10 seconds. After we paid, he treated us to an original crêpe, butter and sugar. It was magical. My mouth is watering and I can’t wait to go back. Please try this place, sit inside, take deep breaths and chit chat with JC. Last but not least, we drank hot cider with whiskey. Icing on the already delicious cake.

First of all, to clarify this place is not Parisienne. Its crêpes from Brittany, the two are different. Just as Tex-Mex is not the same as authentic Mexican cuisine. We stumbled across this place when we were walking through East Village after dinner. We had been to a crêpes place from Brittany when we were in Paris, and so I recognized the flag(the black and white one, different from that of France) and was interested in checking out their menu. As the other Unilocalers have mentioned there is a little window where you can order to go, if you don’t want to do a sit down. Suddenly Jean-Christophe popped out of the window and greeted us «Bön soir». While I am by no means fluent in French, I speak some and love testing out my French with local speakers. I greeted him back quite enthusiastically. He asked us where we lived, I told him in Battery Park so not very far from where this place is location. He offered to give us a free crêpe, either now or we could come back later and claim it. My boyfriend loves crêpes, and even though he was filled to the brim — he said«yes». JC is so passionate about the food, I told him about how we visited Breizh café in Paris and that we loved it(this is apparently the only crêperie from Brittany in Paris according to him — and the only place that makes«decent» crepes in all of Paris). He quickly made a simple sweet crêpe with butter and sugar(the classic as he tells us). It was meant to be something that my boyfriend just tasted(and by that I mean take a couple of bites) but he ate the entire thing in under 5 minutes. Yes, that’s how good it was(to put it in perspective, we had just had just finished dinner and drinks a mere minutes ago). we had a lot of crêpes while we were in Paris and boyfriend didn’t really like them. Now, here is the main difference — the Parisian ones are soft and mushy, while these are light, airy and crispy. My boyfriend described them as eating a croissant because of the layers when the crêpe is folded. JC also made a little taster of a savory crêpe(this one has buckwheat but unfortunately is not gluten free because it does have some wheat flour). He also made us taste the mushrooms which he made with a little tarragon and the blueberry, cooked down with little sugar and lime but not so sweet that they mask the flavor of the blueberries. He also told us he uses unsalted butter because he doesn’t like the salted varieties from the US(given the quality of salt they use). Instead, he buys the unsalted version and salts them using, yes you guessed it, high quality salt from Brittany(he showed me the packet). After, we had tried so many things I felt bad that he had given it all to us for free, so I tried to take out some money but he refused to take it and told me to be «nice». It’s so uncommon to see such a kind gesture in NYC, which has become so commercialized. I would highly recommend trying out this place out, if you like crepes. They have a wide variety of sweet and savory crepes. And I know he mentioned the blueberry sweet crepes with whipped cream that wasn’t even on the menu. JC is amazing — friendly and so passionate about food!

Unilocaler Robert N was craving for some crepes and noticed Crepes Canaveral got super high ratings on Unilocal. He got the Ham, Cheese and Egg Crêpe. I took a few bites and my conclusion was that it was savory, a bit messy and decently large for $ 8. The crêpe was flavorful which gives it a solid 4 stars but not quite a flavorbomb. The crêpe maker was very friendly though and let us try a small piece of a dessert crêpe.

These crepes are better than crepes in Paris. Mmm… super thin so it’s slightly crunchy with caramel(I believe homemade) and whipped cream. Plain with butter and the perfect pinch of sea salt… doubly mmm… Mr. Frenchman from Brittany is super nice and has a great passion for making perfect crepes. Crepes everyday!!!
