(2.50 stars) Always a middle of the pack player among NY’s «big name» steakhouses, Angelo & Maxie’s ownership change now finds their quality dropping like a rock. Steaks here have always been seasoned, seared and finished well, just like the big boys– they still are. A&M never started with a grade of beef which was in a league with New York’s elite steakhouses, and never charged prices which reflected prime(top 1%) beef perfected by adequate dry aging. The kitchen was good at turning good(not great) meat into an enjoyable steak dinner. They had the integrity to never pretend(thru promotion or pricing) to be something they weren’t, and their approach made them beloved. Service had always been personable and warm, even when occasionally sloppy. The lack of pretentiousness and fair pricing made A&M a steakhouse«for the people.» Fast-forward to 2012. The quality of beef is only a shade above what is obtainable from a high-end grocery. Prices are inflated for this grade of product. Their side dishes are still very good, as they are in many better steakhouses. Service is rushed and increasingly impersonal. The general impression is that the new management is more concerned with monetizing a legendary steakhouse name than they are with providing a decent steakhouse experience.

Had a great time here several years ago as part of a large party in the cigar room(private dining room.) A friend and I shared the porterhouse for two(enormous and delish — perfectly medium rare) which i barely touched after a HUGE fresh chopped salad.(Took 1⁄3 of it home and took home a good bit of steak. My pug enjoyed the bone — under CLOSE supervision). BIG food at a BIG price — with a BIG scene. Might have made my butt BIG as well. Good fun!

This place gets 5 stars for it’s creamed spinach alone. Best. Creamed. Spinach. Of. My. Life. The filet mignon and red wine were amazing too. This place has a hustle and bustle feel to it, so if you’re looking for quiet dining, it’s not for you.

I had the full experience with this restaurant starting with getting drinks at the front bar and chatting it up with the friendly bartender. When my friends finally made it to the restaurant I was ready to eat. And eat we did: Dozen oysters Chilled jumbo shrimp Bakers dozen clams casino Fried Calamari Steak Tar-tare Classic Wedge Salad Crab Cake and to top it off: 16oz New York Strip with… Mashed Potatoes Mac and Cheese Steamed Asparagus Steamed Broccoli Sauteed Mushrooms OK, I didn’t eat all of this by myself as I had help from 5 others but you get the point. I tried a ton of stuff here and it was all great. My steak was cooked perfectly and the wine continued to flow the entire night. It fell short of the 5 stars because one of my friends steaks was a little undercooked and there is a B rating on the outside of the restaurant. I dint want to know what made it a B but I know from looking at the city food inspection agency that its never a good thing. I love the atmosphere here. There was just enough energy to make this place feel alive without it being too loud to talk around the table with your friends. Its also in my favorite part of the city. I am a fan here and recommend checking it out.

Well, I ate here primarily because I used to love their steak tartare. Well it has changed from table-side preparation to being served as a little patty(WHERE“S THEBEEF??) on a salt block with some mustard and onions. I liked the table-side better. Im just saying. That’s all I had and it wasn’t much to eat. My BF had the lamb chops, they were excellent, and his friend had the cajun T-Bone and said it was very good. But Hey this is MY review and my tartare was not as I remembered and I used to eat here ALOT. I hear they are changing owners so I guess change is inevitable. But BOOHOO, I miss my tartare!

Worse service ever! Also worst food ever! I have not given a review for this place yet even though I have been here several times in the past. If I did reviewed it in the past, then I would have to re-edit and change it from 5-Stars to the present 1-Star. We had a reservation for 5 at 7:00PM on a Friday night. No problem. Our party was all here and we were promptly seated. Our server came by to take our drinks. He was shocked we didn’t order anything from the bar and ordered only sodas. Well, we weren’t drinkers plus some of us needed to drive home afterwards. Our drinks came and then our server«disappeared» for over 20 minutes. We wanted to order but there was no one to take it. After 22 minutes he came by to take in our order. Nothing too fancy. We got two orders of the raw bar sampler, steak tartare and a dozen raw oysters… that should not take more than 15 minutes right? Or so we thought…30 minutes had passed and finally! Our main course came in time just as we were finishing up up our seafood stuff. Three bone in rib eyes… medium rare and a porterhouse for two medium rare. They were cooked slightly under medium rare but that’s no biggie. But on first bite… there was no seasoning at all. Did they not salt & pepper it? I finally did taste some salt on she parts of my ribeye. I guess the seasoning was unevenly applied. The mac & cheese and onion straws were pretty good. Dessert time! Server gave us our dessert menus and then disappeared for another 20 minutes. Ummm… we want our dessert so we can get out of there! My butt was getting sore from sitting in that tight corner booth. So 20 minutes later our server took our dessert order and coffee. I ordered the crème brûlée…and it came in a small appetizer plate? There was barely any«crème». All I ate was a sheet of toasted caramel. WTF? The bill came out to almost $ 400…and we tipped about 12% which was about $ 49-$ 50. I gave an extra dollar for his promptness on giving us the bill even before we had finished eating our dessert. Before anyone starts flaming me about«Oh, these severs work hard and deserve more than that» but this particular server did NOT server us well. He was missing on many occaisons and didn’t take our orders. Then came back to our table about the tip saying«Does this say $ 5 or $ 50?» We should have just given him $ 5. I admit, I’m believer of tipping based on service and I usually tip around 18%-20% but this was the lowest I have ever tipped! Do I know the name of this server? Nope. There was a letter«A» on top of the bill though. Who knows. Definitely will NOT recommend anyone to this place. Even more ironic is the ad inside the bill holder with a membership for«preferred customer». Yeah right. Why would anyone want to go there with this type of service? Not us! I will be saying Goodbye to this place as it has been blacklisted amongst our friend’s future birthday celebrations. Gotta spread the word about this place. :-)

I came here with a date and was definitely satisfied. We split a Caesar salad to start with was very good, and then ordered a filet mignon with bleu cheese off the specials menu and a potato au gratin(both for him) and the salmon for me. I had a munch of his food too and can say everything was very good. The drinks were strong, the service was fine and my only issue is that the bathroom should have been nicer. I’m a big fan of all of the restaurants on Park Avenue South really, but I would make a point out of coming back to Angelo and Maxie’s.

I attended a wedding in the back room — the food was awesome. I would have given this review at least 4 stars had it not been for the horrible service. Angelo Maxies is a steakhouse, pure and simple. We were given a banquet menu, which listed all of the yummy items in store for us. However, it also said«sweet potato» as one of the sides. Now, I hate sweet potatos. So when I gave my order, I said«I don’t want a sweet potato. Can I have a regular potato?» The answer given was«I don’t know, the chef might not have any. The menu is set in advance.» I said that I understood, but if this is a steakhouse, they should have a baked potato somewhere in the kitchen. He said he’d see what he could do. After the appetizer and salad course, the busboy cleared away all of the silverware around the plate, including the steak knives and second fork. So when my tasty 13oz tenderloin comes… I can’t eat it. I have to wait for the waiter to come back and give me a fork… but no knife. Finally he comes back with a knife. And there’s a tiny sweet potato on my plate. I called over the waiter and asked him about the regular potato, because I’m not going to eat this one and it’s now been wasted. «The kitchen is really backed up.» he said, and walked away. So backed up that they can’t plate ONE baked potato? Mashed potato? Nothing? Drinks were v e r y slow to come, and we had to ask multiple times if we could order drinks. There was no bartender so we had to wait for our waiter. Sigh. We told the waiter«bring two», and he just looked annoyed at us for actually wanting drinks. Otherwise, the food was great, the ambiance was lovely, and I had a great time with my friends. However, the slow and bordering on sarcastic service will keep me from coming back or recommending this as a catering venue. Shame, because the food was delicious.

I left full of steak. I don’t often eat steak so it is typically a memorable experience. I think Angelo & Maxies was good but not«Great». The décor is supposed to deliver a «1930s atmosphere» but feels more like a restaurant in a hotel lobby. Image search them to understand what I am trying to describe. Our server was phlegmatic but got the job done. The manager made a passionless visit to the table to assure all was satisfactory. The food, very good. Steaks prepared as ordered and the sides would feed a much larger table. Would dine here again but not as a first choice, something is just missing.

I have always been a fan of Angelo’s and Maxies, it is not the best steakhouse in New York but definitely good quality for the price. It isn’t as pricey as the other steakhouses. For New Year’s Eve, we decided to go out to dinner to the city, we had absolutely no reservation and EVERY restaurant in the city was packed to capacity. After trying out four different restaurants, we headed out to dinner at A&M, we were seated within two minutes(no wait time at all). I’ve ordered the usual for appetizer: fried calamari.. Their fried calamari was excellent, I loved their dipping sauce. For my entry, I ordered the Ribeye steak, it was very tasty but a bit on the dried side. And to top it all off, I had my Oreo Ice cream sandwich which is a must when I come here. Though their steak wasn’t five star quality, the fast paced seating, tasty appetizers, and great service makes this place a four star restaurant. Unfortunately, staff members were setting up for a New Year’s Eve party so we were a bit rushed.

If a waiter falls down in the forest, and no one is there to hear him, does he really make any sound? This is a long overdue review on a meal I had here during restaurant week. I wanted to get in one more RW meal during the last week it was offered in February. So I decided to disappear one day during work for a long lunch and give this place a try. Entering the front doors it gives the impression of a chain type restaurant, but a more upscale version. Kind of like the Red Lobster of steakhouses.(and I like Red Lobster — chesapeake bay biscuits, yum!) Nice wood interior, small cigar area to the side, bright and open dining area with large windows all around. Lots of seating but tables are a bit close to each other. Looks like a nice place to take a date or business lunch meal. Or a mistress or gigalo. To each his/her own! I mentioned that I was there for RW and the hostess was nice enough to quickly take me to a table and hand me the menu. When the waiter came by and I told him I was ordering off the RW menu I could almost smell the odor of disdain eminating off him. He was not outwardly obnoxious to me, but he was not the most warm or attentive person I have ever encountered. Sheesh, it was not as if I was going to take his puppy away! The bread basket that is placed in front of you is carbohydrate crack! Good stuff. I started with the ceasar salad which had just the right amount of dressing in it and was a nice size. Filet mignon was cooked medium with a good amount of pink in the middle, and the edges had a nice char on them. A good steak, not the best I have ever tasted, but worthy of a good review. Sides were ok — basic steakhouse menu items — and tasted fine. Cheesecake for dessert, which is a favorite, was humongous! I seriously went into a meat and sugar coma after eating all this. Back at the office I was in slow-mo the rest of the day. All throughout my waiter hardly came by to see how I was doing. Guess he had his fill of RW diners. Water glass was filled once or twice but that was ok. I had some reading material with me as I was alone. I would say that this was definitely worth it for a RW meal. Would I go back for full price? Maybe, depending on the occasion or company I am with. It is a decent steak and overall meal was fine. It just did not«wow» me as other steakhouses have.

Went to dinner for RW. Had the caesar salad, filet mignon au poivre, creamed spinach(extra)and cheesecake. All solid. Although my au poivre was seriously au poivred as in coughing thru the first few bites and the charring was just that side of burnt. Dirty martini to start things off. Always nice basket of bread to nibble on. Service was attentive. I have been going here for years and years, since they opened and it didn’t feel as awesome as it used to be although I can’t put my finger on what is off about it. Still, if u get a chance definitely give them a try during Restaurant Week.

Our waitress was amazing. Great service. Great recommendations. My ribeye was plump and juicy. I like my steaks medium rare, so I took the advice of fellow Unilocalers and ordered it medium. It came out PERFECT. Red in the center. Was it really 26oz? I think they liked me so much they gave me a special one. Calamari was average. Creamed spinach was creamy. Hashbrown was huge. Fries were thin. Onion rings were oniony. You get exactly what you order; nothing out of the ordinary.

A little cheaper than most of the other big steak places. For the money, a home run. Even price independent, the steaks are quite good, service solid. Worth a try!

In my past life of adult times, my former love who is a man of many hats took me for a romantic dinner for my birthday. Angelo and Maxies is one of the steakhouses which I’ll return. I highly recommend the rib eye steak at $ 26.95 and my own entrée of lamb at $ 26.95 was very favorable amid the overprice. The French Onion soup at $ 5.95 was average yet immensely swimming in salt. Surprisingly one cocktail of an Apple Martini is priced at $ 10.00 rather than the standard $ 14.00. The soufflé at $ 8.50 is a dessert worth indulging as a change of palette to my usual tiramisu or chocolate cake. Customer service is attentive and quality of steaks for the meat lover exceeds my expectations as a foodie. I would come back for a return visit to accompany my entrée with a glass of Claret. To live life beyond the ordinary, patrons need to save for a special occasion splurge as dinner for two totaled a hefty hole in our budget at $ 92.00(with New York City’s notorious sales tax but without gratuity).

Took a friend here for her birthday because she loves steak. I like the décor of this place. We sat in one of the square booths and they have mini circular booths for 3 too. Very nice. A few of us got to the place before the birthday girl did. The hostess was helpful, I asked her who our server was and told the server to bring out a cake and candle at the end of the meal. The early birds including myself just got comfy at the booths first and enjoyed our free bread. Bread was very good and the crackers were good too. Finally everyone arrived and we order the following to share. 1. House salad — Nothing special, mostly greens not much ingredients, dressing was okay. Huge portions. 2. Teriyaki filet mignon — I like this the most out of the other dishes we ordered, for me the mushrooms tasted better than the steak. 3. Grilled filet mignon — One big piece about 2 in. thick meat, wanted it medium rare and it was really rare. Because it is so thick the middle was entirely rare, which is a little disturbing. 4. T-Bone steak — Wow, this was HUGE. 5. Chocolate soufflé — Whoa… they OD on the chocolate too much chocolate that covered the entire plate, huge portions as well. 6. Oreo ice cream sandwich — Yet, OD on the melted chocolate or was it syrup? A lot of vanilla ice cream, this was fun to eat. The dishes had no presentation, doesn’t come with sides and sides all cost over $ 10. They have a very simple menu. Oh, get some matches on the way out. Matches were the only thing that I liked about this place.

Unexpectedly Good That sounds worse than it is. My girlfriend and I always like to take advantage of restaurant week, which winds up being every week somehow but regardless she decided to pick a steakhouse for me her and a friend of mine since he is a picky eater. Lots of stuff on the menu and I wound up not doing to restaurant week menu. There was nothing wrong with and it was actually one of the better menus I’ve seen for the week long venture. We started off getting ½ dozen raw oysters. YES I KNOW, who would get oysters at a steak house. We were all very hungry and had been craving it for some time. Anyway as my meal wound up getting the Marinated Roumanian Steak with Grilled Onions. This was unbelievably good. The steak was tender just like I asked for since I ALWAYS ask for my steak medium rare. Nice sized portion of meat to. For dessert we ordered three things since there were three of us. Can you say fat ass? Apple Crisp w/Ice Cream, Oreo Cake & a Black and White Cheesecake. I ordered the Oreo Cake which I thought was the best but all of them were pretty good. I saw setting as a place to go after work with your friends to have some drinks and shoot the shit. I wouldn’t take a date here but hey that’s just me. The Total was $ 250 for three people. It could have been a lot cheaper but we tend to over indulge. A couple of glasses of wine will do that to you OH and I forgot to mention our waiter was great. Great guy who took care of us and was always around when we needed him

Could have been an epic Friday night/Restaurant Week dinner, if not for 2 things: 1) Broken AC during the ’10 Heatwave, as it will come to be know 2) Orderer’s remorse: i was sold on the skirt steak because sometimes RW entrees can be small and skirt steak is always a big portion. This steak was delicious and enormous, but it’s definitely one of my least favorite cuts on the menu. Couldnt stop staring at other tables, where the pink centers of the ribeyes and filets were staring back at me, taunting me about my choice to bypass the filet, or even the sirloin on the prix fixe menu. Friendly professional service. We were seated immediately once our full reservation arrived. It may have been a bit rushed, but I get it, Friday night and we’re ordering Restaurant Week menu; we were still there for an hour and a half. Sides were unbelievable; best creamed spinach I’ve ever had, mushrooms and mashed potatoes also great. Drinks were poured nicely(no rocks glasses? here’s a tumbler of kettle on the rocks for $ 12; $ 11 house wines). Very reasonable menu(all steaks a very reasonable $ 37-$ 40), great RW menu and portions. I’ll be back, hopefully the AC is fixed by then.

My best friend’s dad brought us here, insisting that they have«a five hundred dollar steak for only fifty bucks!» He was dead-on for taste! The restaurant is big and busy and full of smiling servers. Our waitress was delightful and even folded our napkins when my friend & I stepped out for a minute. They have a fairly small menu, but it’s full of great foods. We shared the calimari as an appetizer which was SUCH the best & the dip was like a sweet & sour kind of thing? Delicious. We all got some variation of filet mignon, and I had the terryaki one, which was fantastic. Their sides are huge, a large is more than enough to share with four people-we had the brown mashed potatoes & the spinach(which was amazing) & we all shared a hot fudge sundae at the end, although only me and my friend’s dad had the slightest bit of room left to pack it in! Ha.
