Great place to wind down after work. Ping pong, shuffleboard, pool table, cornhole, washers, jenga, darts… and live music! This place competes with the Pour Haus for top bar in New Braunfels. If they added some food trucks or any food options nearby I would give it 5 stars!

Went on a Friday night with friends! Pool and Shuffle Board was cheap, washers, ping pong, jenga, darts and corn hole was free! Just a great place to wind down after a hard day of work! Drinks were great too! Had a good strong rum and coke. There was live music too! It was great! Only downside was no food. It needs food! Better than the Pour Haus, just a little out of the way. Will be coming back for sure!

Tavern in the Gruene hosted the after party of my wedding. It was awesome! There are several rooms, many games, two stages, and a fun outdoor patio. A great place to have a relaxed and fun evening! Our guests loved it.

Nice little spot. I like that they have ping pong, as well as a nice sized seating area and patio. The drinks are fairly cheap and good pours. The only problem I had is that it closes at midnight. That’s a little too early for a bar.

Really fun place! I love that there are different rooms separating entertainment: pool table in one, live music in another, the bar in one, shuffleboard in another. Yet everything still somehow flows. They also have a great outdoor bar and stage. Reasonably priced drinks for being so close to Gruene(You get the Gruene feel without the Gruene fuss) It’s a great place to hear local bands and meet the local New Braunfels folk. If you’re from out of town and love live music, it’s a must check out. Tuesday nights, they do or used to do a live remote from the local Americana radio station KNBT with Ray Wylie Hubbard, who’s a great singer/songwriter. If you like local people, local music, and local fun, you would probably also like Billy’s Ice House and River Road Ice House!

Good spot. They have a shuffle board which we like. It can get really Smokey in there though. On the up side, the shuffle board is by front door with a wall dividing you from main bar where most of the smoke is. Good juke box but music only plays if someone pays to play something. They do have live music on weekends. Everyone is really friendly here.

We went here on a Friday night while on vacation. The bar has that rustic honky tonk kinda feel. The bartenders were nice and the drinks good. There was shuffleboard and a pool table. The band that played there that night was excellent. There’s an area to dance in front of the stage. Although the stage area is small, there are plenty of tables and chairs to enjoy the show. I would recommend this bar if you’re looking to have a drink and listen to some good old live country music. It was definitely a good time.

A great escape from the summer heat. Dark and cool inside but not seedy; they have a friendly, welcoming staff and reasonably priced drinks. They score bonus points for offering shuffleboard and table tennis in addition to the usual bar games. Throw in the live music offered most every night it’s damn near impossible not to have a good time here.

I am big fan of Tavern in the Gruene. It’s got a definite tavern feel to it as the name implies. They usually have great drink specials and seem to always have a great band playing everytime I go. It’s a place you can go chill with your friends for a low key night or balls to the wall fun. The staff has always been quick and attentive. I’ve never had to wait for a long time for a drink even when the place is packed. There are alot of cool choices to hit up in Gruene but Tavern in the Gruene has to be a place you stop when bar hopping the town of Gruene, Texas.

I really liked this bar! It reminded me of college back in Stillwater, OK. Very casual, lots of space, and inexpensive drinks! I had $ 4.50 Cabernet wine and actually liked it(shocking since bar wine usually isn’t that great)! The indoor area has two separate large rooms and a huge bar. We sat in one area of the bar where a good cover band played. There is also an outdoor area. It’s definitely a fun place to chill and not worry about dressing up or impressing anyone. It’s not a hole in the wall, but has that personal feeling. The bathrooms are nice too, which is good coming from a girl. ;) But seriously, I highly recommend it!

Great atmosphere… if you enjoy smelling like an ashtray. Very smokey and stinky. Maybe I’ve become spoiled by San Antonio’s smoking ban. I didn’t really see anywhere that would be considered a dance floor. I love a good two step, but when the dance floor isn’t big enough to make a round, not worth it. They did have an outside stage, which did have a larger dance floor. So if you just want a drink with a smoke, great place. Lookin to go dancin? Keep on looking.

A bar is a bar is a bar… right? It’s all in the way you look at it – for me, a good bar is a mix of the bartenders, the patrons and the prices. Yes, I’m a girl who loves a good local microbrew or exotic import, but at the end of the day a cold Lone Star and an interesting conversation is all I require of my watering holes. And holy snikes did I get that at Tavern. Now, I can say this much: when I rolled in, I’d already been drinking(courtesy of that beautiful bitch of a sausage festival known as Wurstfest), so my recall may be a smidge cloudy. But right off the bat, I loved the joint because the doorman waived the $ 5 cover. While I would, of course, like to think it’s because I’m so cute and charming, he told me that his family owned the Gruene Homestead Inn right across the parking lot. I had wasted little time in offering my unsolicited opinion of the inn as a fantabulous place, and he was nice enough to say, «Well hell, since my family is already making money off of you, here’s your $ 5 back.» Ok, maybe he didn’t say it just like that. And maybe I did give him shiz about a cover when there was no band. But the end result is the same — I had an extra $ 5 with me that night, thanks to that guy. So woo and woo on that! Next up, the patrons — they were your usual mix of funsters. A few big bellied good olé boys, who I always inexplicably get along with. One complimented my purse(which is woven entirely from candy wrappers) and told me he’d made things just like that in prison. No lie. There was a guy from Canada wearing a chicken hat and a Vince Gill look-a-like in a black jacket. There were a handful of locals as well, all having just come from watching football. There was the token drunk guy who was way over affectionate; when my friend wouldn’t give him the time of day, he moved over to me. Most women would be appalled, but quite honestly, if you can’t find the story value in something like that, then you really ought to reconsider if you actually have a sense of humor. The drinks flowed freely and everyone was in fantastic spirits. The night was capped when the ex-con and one of the(very cute) locals began arm wrestling for me. And not ‘for me’ as in I requested two see two men arm wrestle, but FORME, as in to the victor goes the spoils. How hilariously awesome is that? Two random dudes in a random bar in a random town arm wrestling out of the blue over a girl whose name they’ve likely already forgotten? Fantastic, I tell you. You can’t find that type of thing in just any old bar.

Not really a part of the Gruene District… but close. A good place to get loaded if Gruene Hall is packed. Think…Neighborhood Bar in a barnwood shack… two minute drive from Gruene. Not Bad.

What’s better than a fabulous Bed & Breakfast in the Hill Country? How about a B&B with a bar on the premises? And, I don’t mean any olé bar, I mean a honky tonk! I recently stayed at the Gruene Homestead Inn and was pleasantly surprised by the on campus bar, Tavern in the Gruene. Built in the mid 90’s, this«shack» looks like it’s been there forever! Dark and cool, this place would be the perfect foil to the summer heat. The bar is complete with pool table, ping pong table, shuffleboard, a decent jukebox, and live music most nights. It was a great mix of locals, music lovers, and tourists. The beers are cheap and cold and the live bands were pretty decent. The best part is the ability to leave and stumble to your cabin/room when you’re done! But, I would visit this bar if I were staying another location in Gruene and New Braunfels!
