An local institution, Monty’s used to be THE spot during my time as an undergraduate as UM. Like clockwork every Friday, my friends and I would head over to grab a Miami Vice(half piña colada and half strawberry daiquiri) while enjoying the cool breeze off the water. For an additional dollar or two you could add an extra shot of rum, which at the time seemed liked a great idea. Fast forward a couple of years and not much has changed. Come the weekend Monty’s still manages to draw quite the crowd, shuffling in to grab a table while watching boats drift in and out of the marina. The demographic has shifted a bit but it is no less popular. They play music and offer greasy fried foods and cold pitchers of beer, while patrons dance under the tiki-style awnings. The happy hour is still a fantastic value, the raw bar seafood is fresh, and the view is stunning. Sure it’s like being in a permanent time loop, but there is something to be said for consistency, especially in South Florida where few others having staying power. As Miami has grown and my tastes have changed, I can’t say I’m nearly as excited for cloying beverages and run of the mill beer selection, but I can’t deny Monty’s has a certain charm when you’re in the right mood. Plus the view really is outstanding.

They’re getting a generous 2 stars because the outdoor beachy vibe is fun. I feel terrible even saying this but the live singer is awful and hard to listen to which ruins half the experience. food is fine but nothing to brag about. I’ve not once had a pleasant experience here and have been here at least 15 times. The service is completely inexcusably slow. I’m talking waiting 35 minutes for your check after asking for it. My group asked for a refill on waters and she forgot about it throughout the whole duration of the meal and only brought us the waters after receiving our check. She also had an incredibly unwelcoming and unappreciative attitude. Other times we’ve had waiters who have not come by once the entire hour to check up on us. Waiter never came back to pick up our check with our card after 30 minutes of waiting, so we took it to the bar were they refused to run our payment through and our waiter was then nowhere to be found. This ordeal caused us to be there 45 minutes past our meal. To put the cherry on top of the cake, they add an 18% service charge into your bill without your permission. That would explain the miserable service — they know they’re getting tipped regardless!

Been waiting 20 minutes for drinks this sucks. Still haven’t taken our order just walked away when she brought us our drinks. Came here in hopes the rumors weren’t true about service declining. They were right. Got my rum runner and it was so strong, even if I was buzzed I couldn’t drink it. Got it moved to a bigger cup with more mix to tolerate it. Save your money don’t go here. Food was burnt or over fried almost all fries on your plate. Minimal seasoning, possibly in the hopes of you being too drunk to notice. Not happening because service is so slow. You are better off getting drinks from the bar itself. Less wait time.

Outdoor seating, fresh seafood and by the water. Check, check and check! I would not miss coming here for a laid back bite to eat any day of the week. I only had the grilled mahi mahi ceaser salad and a few oysters but the fish was blackened just right over a salad that was enormous! The oysters were large and very fresh. Service is a bit slow but the place has the vibe that once you are there you shouldn’t go anywhere else. I space is huge with plenty of seating outside for everyone to enjoy the fresh air.

2.5 stars but I’ll round it up to a three because, you know, Monty’s is a Miami staple. Let’s start with the good: beautiful location. Right on the marina, Monty’s is located on the quiet side of Coconut Grove. Its tiki-bar theme makes it great for tourists, but I know the locals love that about it too. Live music is always a great touch — it’s all good vibes at Monty’s! Happy hour is decent, the drinks come out to be pretty cheap! 4pm-8pm Monday — Friday; expect it to be quieter on M-Th, and pretty packed on Friday. They are NOT stingy with the alcohol here. I repeat: they are NOT stingy. The drinks are nice and strong and you can definitely feel a buzz pretty quickly. The mojito is really disappointing — it doesn’t even have mint in it! Our server was nice enough to take it back last time. Monkey punch is pretty good if you like coconut, but again, it is strong! You have been warned… I’ve tried a few things in terms of food, none of which are great. This isn’t a place I’d come to for the food. If you’re down for some relatively cheap tropical drinks and tiki-bar vibes, then Monty’s is the place to be. I just wouldn’t recommend it for the food.

The view is beautiful overlooking the bay, food & drinks were good but service was horrible! The place was relatively empty when I was there and our waitress still managed to forget our water… one of the standard things to bring to a table. We asked her maybe 3 times and still didn’t get any water until we had paid our bill. We tried to leave a bad tip to show our frustration but realized the tip had been included in the bill already.

Before heading out of town, I stopped by Monty’s to have a quick lunch before getting back to the airport. There were still a decent number of people at the restaurant despite it being midday Friday, but because there’s so much space outside, there was no issue at all grabbing a place to sit(we ended up at the bar). The bartender was pretty friendly with us, getting our drinks and food in relatively short order. You have an okay view of the dock and all the boats, and the fans above keep enough air circulating where it doesn’t feel too oppressively hot despite the humidity. The beer selection wasn’t all that great — a lot of macro selections — but Sam Adams passed off for okay, and the shots here are definitely poured on the more generous side here. Food-wise, there’s(unsurprisingly) a focus more towards seafood, although it would probably be best to describe the menu best as pretty generic American. The clam chowder is more of a small bowl size, but I actually found the flavor to be quite solid. It’s not up there with New England clam chowder from, say, New England, but it’s definitely solid and has decent flavoring. I was slightly less impressed with the fish tacos, which I got with blackened mahi mahi. The fish itself is not flavored all that much, and there is a ton of pre-shredded cheese(probably straight out of a packet from Publix, if I had to guess) doused on top of it — and it’s not even really melted. The guacamole on the side was not the freshest, but it helped to add a little bit of mojo to the tacos. I did like the hard shells on an aesthetic note, as I think soft tacos would have made this a really mushy mess. I also got fries on the side, which were pretty standard — they could have used a bit more salt. While it was convenient to my location, I probably wouldn’t come back again for anything more than an expectation that I would get filled up. The food didn’t blow me away, and the beer selection was really wanting, IMO. That said, you shouldn’t walk in here expecting to be blown away from the get-go.

Monty’s is definitely a classic and beloved happy hour spot in Coconut Grove. It’s on the water which is really nice and their happy hour deals are on point– ½ price drinks from 4−8pm M-F. It’s such a fun atmosphere and the drinks are very good. Late August-mid December and mid January-early May expect it to be packed with UM students on Friday nights. My biggest issue is with the food– it’s mediocre at best. It feels like almost everything is heavily fried and greasy but the peel and eat shrimp are quite yummy! The service at Monty’s is also very ehh. Especially when it’s busy, you’ll be waiting awhile.

Monty’s still has one of the nicest views in Coconut Grove. Next to the marina. Order anything from fish fingers to fish sandwich, fish dip or even a burger. You won’t go wrong. Happy hour is great! Live music is nice. Parking lot across the street. Get your tix validated. Parking can be pricey.

Happy hour here now. Service is OK as there’s many people here guess it’s a Friday and Happy Hour where drinks are half price. Ordered calamari as appetizers and we had an order of the skirt steak and an order of fish & chips. The food is good not great. Loud noise can’t really talk or hear much. Not bad for a Happy Hour for a Friday. Not really an ideal place for dating but goid for Happy Hour :)

Ive been to Montys before but never on a friday night. I must say it was quite life filled with a mix of um students kids and older people. I’m going to give it 4 stars for the live ambience and the great vibes. The food could be good or okay last night was a mixture of both. My party ordered hot buffalo wings they were actually delicious served with a side of celery blue cheese and more hot sauce they were freshly cooked. The fried calamari with lightly fried thin sliced serve with the cocktail sauce and lemon they were good as well very simple. The curly fries we ordered we’re kind of stuck together which I didn’t find that appealing they were good in flavor though. I had an IPA beer and some of the party ordered a Rum Runner that said it was lacking and alcohol. We complain to the manager and they brought us a stronger drink but when will you receive the bill we noticed it was an additional $ 10 for the stronger drink I think $ 10 for a shot is expensive and not worth it. Overall it’s a fun place to go with a beautiful view great place to bring guest that are in town and the age does not matter. Was a band playing reggae and pop hits and also a DJ the hype the crowd.

Love the fact that it’s right by the water. Second plus is the fact it wasn’t packed on a lunch weekday. Third thing, the staff is great. The jalapeño poppers are to die for and the buffalo wings are superb. Visit on a weekday, if you visit during the evening or the weekends it will be packed.

Raw bar happy hour rocks! 1 $ oysters & little necks! Decent beer — they should get some local craft beer in here — to really shine. Shrimp not gulf :(foreign but good. Florida stone crab claws awesome! Priced great for the grove with an awesome view. Come here for the raw bar — all other reviews aside that complain of their shortcomings are negated if you are a lover of fresh seafood:)

My son wanted to take me out to lunch and since it was beautiful day, I suggested Coconut Grove. I suggested Monty’s and I hadn’t been there in years. We sat outside by the dock and it was beautiful. The service was adequate and timely. We walked back to the car to head home and his stomach ache began. Needless to say he acquired food poisoning. I feel horrible, he wanted to do something for his mom and ended up very ill. Will not go back and will not recommend.

Luis, our bartender, is awesome! He recommend the best food for us & was very attentive. This place has many outside bars and is on the water which makes it even better. The place is covered in big screen TVs which makes it a perfect spot to watch your favorite games! It’s a popular hangout for UM students apparently.

I was working in the Miami area and my colleagues and I were searching for a place to eat lunch by the water. After reading some 3 star reviews and complaints about Monty’s on Unilocal,I was skeptical. but after realizing it was right on the water and checking out how beautiful the views of all the yachts were next to the restaurant, i decided to give it a try. And I am very glad I did. The décor was typical Miami and just what we hoped it would be. Wooden«picnic Style» tables, views of yachts and the ocean, sports on tvs located all over the dining area. It was perfect! There was even a 2 piece band with a guitar player, a singer and a karaōke track playing stylistically appropriate music. One of my colleagues ordered some peel and eat shrimp for an appetizer. It was in a garlic, oil, tomato broth and was delicious! I ordered the grilled Mahi-Mahi fish sandwich. The bun was way bigger than the amount of fish I had, but I didn’t need all that bread anyway. I cut the bun in half, put the fish on half of the bun, which was now a regular sized sandwich, then put the tomato and lettuce on that, spread some tarter sauce on it and went to town. The grilled Mahi-Mahi was seasoned well and very tasty. It was also served with fries, which were a little soft. Had a couple corona light’s served in small plastic cups, just big enough to hold one bottle of beer. All in all, considering the view, the food and the band, we had a great lunch and were happy to take in a unique Miami experience.

Not sure the food is worth the view. Great setting for drinks but how can a bar screw up nachos, wings and a burger. A doorstop would have been tastier than the fish sandwich. Great for happier hour beverages. Perfect coconut grove ambiance and the more you drink the better the better the food tastes.

Casual dining. Food was very good. The Florida Stone Crabs were delicious, but a little pricey IMO. The conch fritters were really good and very nice size portion for the price. The Island Steak was cooked perfectly(med-rare) and very flavorful! The cocktails(Mango Mojito & Pina Colada) were on point too!

The selling points for this particular Monty’s is without a doubt the location and lively atmosphere. I love the open space and casual beachy vibe. As for the service and culinary experience, they’re subpar. I’ve had to wait almost an hour to get my food, and I can assure you I’ve never gotten my order in less than half an hour. So don’t go hungry. The food itself is very average, edible but not memorable. I’m a huge fan of conch fritters, so I was excited to try them. The ones here have no conch flavor and taste more like carbs than ocean. You’d think you were eating hush puppies in a blind taste test. They do have an extensive menu, so there’s always a reason to return and try something new.

Ah, the quintessential Miami experience. Waterfront seafood dining in a picturesque setting. Only issue is that the food is MEH. While my experience at Monty’s ranges over many years, my recent exposure to Monty’s is usually for lunch. Service is nice, but a bit slow, especially on a compressed lunch hour. The restaurant is adjacent to a large parking lot, which is pretty convenient. In past years, their happy hour was quite a fun time, although I always preferred the South Beach location. I haven’t been to happy hour here or Dinner in quite some time. If you have out of town visitors, it’s still a solid spot to take them, simply for the views and to eat seafood. But it’s really just a lot of fried food, and their prices are a bit high. Overall, not my first choice, but it does the job.

Solid lunch spot. Huge restaurant with plentiful outdoor seating and live music along the waterfront in Coconut Grove. As you could imagine, the menu is almost entirely fish-based, but there are a few vegetarian options if you don’t consume fish. The service was great and the atmosphere was super relaxed and fun. Think of it as pub food with a specialty in fish. Not the most amazing meal you’ll ever have, but definitely good.

While on a business trip in Miami, I found myself in the position of having 20 minutes to eat lunch before getting to another part of the city for a meeting. #poorplanning Luckily the folks at Monty’s were as accommodating as could be, making the overall experience great. Upon entering, we asked the staff if they could cook up something that would have us out in ten minutes and they obliged. They immediately put together a Caesar salad and conch chowder soup that was at the table in five minutes. The salad was decent as far as salads go and the conch coup was good. However, I’m Caribbean, which means that we eat conch soup a lot, which means my standards are abnormally high. So while Monty’s soup was good, it wasn’t amazing The restaurant is located right on a marina and provides some awesome views of the yachts that are docked. The seating outside also offers some cool breeze making for a nice dining experience. Overall the food was just ok. But the views and service are definitely worth a trip here. I would definitely try things on the menu other than soup and salad though.

I must say that my opinión from this place had change. I used to love it. Now I see they don’t pot any efford in the menú or getting quality items(Maybe only in the rawan bar). Burguers and sándwiches are so basic cheese options are desgusting, how can you offer American or Swiss only? With so many good Burger Joints doing crafted burguers using good breads… I don’t know, I think menu is dated. Place still Cool and great with boats view. You know… But if I happened to return I would order only the curly fries basket and something from the trae bar. Really!!! They need a visit of this tv shows that re configure and put places in 2015… Well 2016 lets say…

26 check-ins later(and probably another 26 that are unaccounted for), I think it’s about time I update my review for Monty’s. It makes me laugh looking back on almost SIX years ago when I wrote a review after my first Friday night here. Little did I know all of the times I would be back. So many in fact, I was the Duchess for quite some time! If I’m here, it’s for happy hour. Half off drinks and some specials at the raw bar. I’m usually sipping one of three things: 1. Miami Vice — Half piña colada, half strawberry daiquiri, with a rum floater inside. This is what you want to be drinking as the sun goes down on the water. It’s very sweet so usually one is enough. 2. PK3 — Pain reliever on the menu but regulars will remember it as the PK3. This is what you drink if you are looking to blow off a little steam(and by that, I mean get buzzed). It tastes different every time you order it because I think each bartender has their own ratio of alcohol to juice. It’s strong and doesn’t even taste that good. Anymore than three will put you over the edge and just one will leave you with a hangover the next day. Good luck! 3. Beer — Pitchers of beer are pretty cheap. A couple of times it’s been flat but they were quick to replace. The food is nothing to write home about but I usually end up ordering conch fritters, nachos, or some items from the raw bar. The oysters will definitely not be the best you’ve ever had, nor will the stone crabs, but it’s something(and cash only). It seems like the Friday night hype among UM students has died down since my days. We used to have to arrive every Friday by 5:00 pm in order to get a table. Nowadays, we can stroll in around 6:30 and find a spot. I used to complain a lot about service, but that has seemed to improve. Now, we can’t nix the view. Monty’s remains a spot I love to bring visitors to. There aren’t too many places outside of South Beach where you can casually hang waterside. For that, and the nostalgia, I’ll be back!

I went here on a Friday night and honestly, I am always wondering how is this place still running. They are understaffed, customer services is horrible and the food is always overcooked. I had to think twice before eating my burnt chicken strips but I was so hungry. I did not like it here, which is sad because it has a great location but the quality here is not worth the price. On top of bad food and service you have to pay for parking. I would not recommend this place!

So only come here for happy hour. Their food quality has downgraded over the years. I got the Mahi sandwich and it was very dry and tasteless so I added everything I could to make it more edible and it just wasn’t there :(the poor quality definitely made it even more overpriced. My partner also got a chicken sandwich and it was the same. Conch fritters were great though! Stick with the half off raw bar and drinks during the week if you want to leave mouth and wallet happy.

2 stars just for the location. 0 stars for everything else This place has such great potential to be an amazing place to relax. The outside bar is beautiful with lots of small palms and nautical themed decorations. Lacquered wood and tiki type roofing make this a typical tropical bar. Private parking and plenty of boat docking are a few additional benefits. That’s the good news. The bad news: $ 4.5012oz miller light drafts, $ 10 appetizers, and slow service. I have to admit, I tried one of their $ 4.50 Miller lite drafts. Ice cold for sure! But I’m not sure that was any better than any other Miller lite I’ve consumed. Also, I tried their Montys Famous Conch Chowder. Being in Miami I thought there might be a better chance of getting fresh Bahamian conch. Well, that might still be the case in Miami but, not here. The conch chowder I had might as well been Cambell’s. Little square potatoes just like it was scooped from a 5 gallon bucket from Restaurant Depot. Good thing it was only $ 6 !!! Love salt? Order that chowder and you’ll have that phone-distracted bartender on her heels fetching more $ 4.50 drafts!

Service was horrible. Went on a Thursday afternoon, not many customers at all(not rush hour yet) and had to wait on everything. Draft Beer is served in tiny cups, asked repeatedly for water, which should just be served to you when you sit out in the heat. On the flip side, my talipia was delicious. I recon the service SUCKS so bad is that when they get an 18% gratuity regardless, why would they possibly even try? Sad

Honestly, this has to be one of the best locations in Miami to have a restaurant. It’s right in the water. Perfect for a dinner and dancing, or opt for dayside lunch. HOWEVER… the customer service was eh!(Especially for the price) and some say the food wasn’t that great either. A friend of my husband and I had his birthday dinner here. Never been to this location, had been to the other one on South Beach. Was impressed with the location. Parking was sort of a nightmare because they have limited parking but the restaurant does validate so that was good. We had a large party so we had a couple of servers. But they were not very attentive. I was the only one to order the stone crabs, let alone the only cold dish on the table, and ironically, mine was the last to come out. Everyone finished there meal and I was just starting mine. Mind you, the stone crabs are not a cheap dish. And I was the last to finish. Unacceptable. Everyone wasn’t really thrilled with there food, but you go to these places for ambience, which was lacking. They had music which was nice. The restaurant is large but was dead for a Saturday night. I can see why. It such a shame because it such a great location, but I don’t think I would make my way back there.

Phenomenal happy hour; great prices on clams, shrimp, and oysters($ 1.00 each from 4:00pm-8:00pm, Mon-Fri). Drinks and regular food are a bit overpriced because you’re paying for location(it is on the water). Parking is atrocious. Service is sub-par and the overcrowding only makes things worse. You will be stalked by people waiting for you to finish so they can grab your table. If you have a small party, waiters and waitresses tend to ignore you after your initial orders in the hope that you’ll get bored and leave to make way for a larger party. It’s fine for happy hour, but other than that, not worth the headache, money, or inconvenience.

I have been a regular at Montys for over 20 years. After today, I will be considering other hotspots when ever wanting to do lunch or dinner near ocean. The service, for the first time ever, was terrible. We were three adults, asked for each person to have own tab, waitress said she could not do it and that we would have to «figure it out», not only was the comment rude, but her tone made it worse. Through the meal, she had a crappy face and rude demeanor. We ended up ordering tilapia sandwiches and fish fingers for the kids. The kids had a few bites, once it looked they weren’t going to have more, I decided to try them, the fish smelled TERRIBLE, much like old fish. I am praying the little ones don’t get sick from this. As for the adult sandwiches, tasteless and fish was not proportionate with bread— did not fit together well at all. Huge piece of bread with fish, a lettuce and a tomato. We added a bunch of ketchup and tarter sauce to give it taste. This is a $ 15 sandwich, there shouldn’t be a reason as to why, we need to add condiments on top to make it taste like something. Very disappointed with both service and food and to top it off, 18% gratuity is added on automatically. I asked to talk to manager, she did not empathize not agree, but did remove charge for kid meal. I still left very dissatisfied, as this is not the usual at Montys. I give it two stars, for the ambience and the fact that I have loved montys for so many years, I will return once more in hopes for better experience.
