We live for the story, right? I mean… what makes it all worth it for you? The combinations we encounter and, hopefully, make them work for us. Let me tell you something about a special combination that makes up a story about a woman from New York and THEUNDERGROUNDKITCHEN. This place is a portal. No, a worm hole… No… a transcendence. No, wait… this place is a testament that finding is way better than technology induced lifestyle hunts. Sure you can go fuck yourselves in those fancy du-jour spots opening up all over town. Makes for great saturated commentary on the nouvelle vanguard spilling in here promoting catch phrases like«Jeeze, 5 years ago you couldn’t walk around here…». Get that out of your system and free yourself for a second here. Please. This place is something that isn’t even close to boasting contemporary business-school-model restaurant/lifestyle operation some prick from Connecticut invested in. No fancy sign. No derelict standing outside trying to lure you in. No hipster tension or cognoscenti hit parade. No. This place is like a glass of water given to you in a moment where a solution is too abstract to formulate. What we have here is a simple storefront that runs itself as a general one-stop sundry and light grocery store for locals and wide eyed passerby. The color palette is a brown, forgotten-about red and middle class yellow scheme that looks like a good place to play lotto and buy a can of coke — there is even a group of loud, modern-day benevolent riffraff outside in avant grade sports attire. Honest place according to this asshole writer. However, if those eyes of yours are a open a little wider and the propensity to say hello to a smiling face that goes by the name Mary Beth ignites, then, well, you’re half way there. Just off to the side inside this general((GENERAL)) store stands a deli with the barest of visual cues to indicate anything more than a dry sandwich and a two day old pickle. Look again and that smiling face will greet you in one of the most non-threatening ways possible along those blocks that make up the Spring Street banking district. Talk to her, dummy. Say hi back. She’s nice and is ready to blow your mind with her culinary genius. Her deli case possesses the ingredients to spin your mind. Mary Beth is the brains behind this simple and accessible fountain of nutrition and unadulterated taste. Feed your pre-conceptions a dose of shut-the-fuck-up and open your heart to Mary Beth. She’ll take care of you like a best friend and feed you like a relative who actually cared about your report card and ironically taught you about Jazz. She doesn’t match the general general of the general store. She lights up that deli and offers you suggestions. She prepares everything offsite and brings it in daily… prepared to explode minds all over downtown. Just go there. You’ll learn why it’s called Underground Kitchen… The address is down below. Have a nice day and a good lunch.

There is no such thing as bad food here. I dare you to try anything and the taste will blow you away. Of course the curry chicken, but that quiche is incredible. Don’t even think about trying the brownies… you will be in heaven. That damn Mary Beth is AMAZING.

This new little spot is a breath of fresh air on Spring St! The owner, Mary Beth is so sweet and a very talented chef. I just ordered the chicken curry sandwich. She made it fresh right there and served it up quick as lightening. This sandwich is so fresh and delicious, it’s definitely going to be a new go-to for me. The fact that it’s located within a convenience store is pretty cool, I can grab a drink, smokes and my lunch in one trip. Freakin awesome!

This place is great. The owner Mary-Beth, is an amazing chef, serving some of the best food I have had in Downtown Los Angeles. I have now been to the Underground Kitchen three times, and each time I am have been equally as impressed. The Good is amazing and Mary Beth treats everyone like family. The next best thing to having a Wife who is a gourmet chef, is going to have a meal at the Underground Kitchen.

Discovered a lovely hidden gem DTLA, the Underground Kitchen inside Spring Street Market. The gourmet sandwiches are great and organic. An incredible selection of Italian cheeses at great pricing and she also does a great job catering events. We had the spinach quiche and loved it, light and fluffy and perfect to take home for dinner. All the Italian Artisan breads are 100% vegan vegetarian, the real deal. I had an event recently catered by Underground Kitchen since I was inspired by our Italian trip! We had an Italian themed party with some great dishes and amazing Italian cheeses! All provided by UGK!!!(Underground Kitchen). Loved the personal touch provided and great set up! I highly recommend her for your next event! Check out this gem today for lunch, dinner or to go!

Been living DT Los Angeles lifestyle for 5 years and FINALLY there is an organic homemade sandwich shop on Spring St. If you blink you’ll miss it. Under Ground Kitchen is the best kept secret for fresh sandwiches and the potato salad is out of control. Thanks for showing up Under Ground Kitchen please whip up some soups! Pea Soup or chicken soup would be amazing. Just saying…

Best tuna ever!!! I am officially addicted. Always torn between getting the curried chicken salad with raisins and apples because it is also delicious but the tuna is now a staple and favorite!

Stumbled upon this place the other day by accident. Excellent options from the norm in the area. It’s like a high-end deli in downtown. Curried chicken salad, quiche, sausages, and tons of great cheeses to take home! I tried the carmelized onion and spinach quiche. Heaven. Pure heaven. Excellent addition to the downtown foodscape.

I just had the italian sausage sandwich for lunch. It was delicious. I tried the curried chicken, too — also delicious — will have that for lunch next time. Welcome to the neighborhood, Underground Kitchen!
