This is a Mexican market, tortilleria & restaurant. There is nothing fancy about it but the food is delicious, affordable & the staff is courteous. My father lives in the neighborhood & for family gatherings(like for Father’s Day which is tomorrow) there is no other restaurant I consider for catering & food. It has a great atmosphere, like being in a small town in rural Mexico. Love it!

Where else can you go and get a pot of fresh menudo for $ 15.00. Feed a family of 5, and have left overs for the next day! This place is awesome! I live 30 miles away but I still make the drive. They also have great tacos, tamales and many other traditional Mexican food. Get there early or wait in line. And if you don’t want to take it to go, well you can eat there.

Well I came here for breakfast the other day just out of the blue and I was pleasantly surprised. My wife and I wanted an authentic Mexican breakfast because we were running around town doing errands. We thought of going to a highly Unilocaled location nearby but we saw this place and decided to give it a shot with only 13 reviews. The area that this place is located in is not very eye catching but if you are from the area it should not be a shocker. The first thing you observe when you enter the location is the amazing smell that takes you into a Mexican grandmother’s home kitchen. The place looks like a small market with lots of seating inside and help your self-beverages on both sides of the restaurant. When I reached the counter a nice lady took our order but the menu had no prices so we just went with things we like. There was no one in the restaurant but two men that looked like regulars by the way they were talking it up. We took a seat by the window and noticed that a lot of customers would come in for pick up so we were a little eased by that. Once our meal arrived after a short wait I asked if they had fresh salsas because Tapatio is the only hot sauce left on the table. They gladly gave me a fresh green and red salsa that I was able to take to my table and the green is bomb and full of flavor. I ordered two different types of tamales and my wife got chilaquiles that were really good. Pork tamale: It was just okay because the flavor was bland and the masa was grainy. Cheese tamale: One of the best I ever had full of flavor and the masa was very good and texture was firm and moist. Chilaquile plate: served with great refried beans that had a smoky full flavored taste. The chilaquiles were crispy and had a great balance of heat and flavor. It was accompanied with two perfectly cooked over easy eggs and some really good rice with mixed veggies in it. So I left completely satisfied and when I cashed out I was glad to only get charged $ 13 for 2 people. I guess if it wasn’t for the pork tamale I would have gave them a 5 star rating but other than that I will be returning.

I’m really trying to give this place a fair chance. It’s close to home and work and I try to support local businesses but I can’t recommend eating here. I’ve had chillaquiles here about the times and they were different each time. Sometimes very spicy sometimes not at all. I just want consistency. Had menudo that was so salty I had to return it. I exchanged it for tamales to go instead. They were very undercooked and had big lumps of fat attached to each piece of meat. Tried chicharron today but something was not right with the sauce. It smelled pretty bad so just finished the rice and beens. Like I said, i really tried to like this place but can’t. There are plenty other places in the area with good inexpensive food. Within walking distance you could find awesome tortas, tacos, menudo, tamales, Aguas, carnitas and buche, etc.

Good menudo, burritos de al pastro and tacos too. Great variety of drink, and they even sell those mexican cookies made of corn(I forget the name). Posole and chilaqiles aren’t the best but the other things I mentioned make up for that!

Most people dislike tripe, especially in soup. However, this place makes the best hang-over remedy ever, known as Menudo. Like gumbo, menudo was once considered the food of the poor since the aristocracy discarded tripe and the poor collected it and found great use for this meat. Menudo at La Imperial is immaculate and Non-greasy. This is a treasure in East Los Angeles.
