This is actually a 3.5 stars review. La Abeja has been in Highland Park for almost 50 years, and going there feels a lot like going to somebody’s house in Mexico. It starts with the smell which will make you hungry. This is an old-school Mexican restaurant, and one of the interesting things is they don’t give your chips/salsa, and the hot sauce on the table is nothing exceptional either. The food is made to order and portions are generous. The chile relleno puts everybody else’s to shame and a steal at $ 4. The chile verde burrito is big enough to share(unless you’re a «cerdito») and tasty enough; it’s nice they don’t put rice in it. The taco dorado de rez is really good, but stay away from the carne asada tacos, they’re pretty sorry: tough, cold meat with a lackluster pico de gallo that’s kinda shameful, actually. The service is friendly but don’t come here in a hurry: it gets pretty full during lunch time and the food can take its time getting to your table. From the looks of it a lot of the folks have been coming here for a long time and the owners stop by the tables to chat. La Abeja is one of those places you can take people from out of town to and make yourself look like a genuine«Angeleno» who knows how to find really good Mexican food. It’s reasonably priced, too. Check it out if you’re in the NELA area or want to do something a little adventurous.

This place walks the line between genius or washout. I think it’s still winning. The Mexican beverage selection is on point. I was able to order my mineral water for the standard price which i enjoy everytime. And the milanesa was legit. I will be back no doubt.

Been coming here for my lunch break whenever I’m near by. All my co workers love it here. 2 burritos and 2 cokes for $ 11 bucks. That’s pretty cheap. And the food, wow, so tender and juicy. Can’t wait to bring my spouse.

You have to try their Chili Verde burrito. I stop by on my way home from work at least once a week to pick one up. It’s to die for!

La Abeja is a great place to go when you are looking for Mexican home cooking. The food was excellent and I really did feel like I was sitting in my mom’s kitchen. Our waitress(I’m assuming she is the owner) was very loving and attentive and gave us great suggestions. I ordered the chile relleno combo plate and it was delicious. Most places only serve one chile and at La Abeja, they give you two. Although I was very full, it was worth it because it was so delicious. I’m looking forward to go back very soon so I can try their menudo.

This place hits the spot every time you want something that feels homemade. My wife love coming here when we crave good Mexican Food. I Highly recommend it! Ps. Combination plate is the best. You get to try two different items(always good no matter what you get) with their homemade rice and beans.

In reality, 4 ½ stars. I went there for lunch. It is a family type place. I loved it when the waitress make us feel like we were family. And we got the 3rd degree on how our food tasted. It was like Mom’s. Everything had the homemade taste and feel. The iced tea was old school, brewed from teabags. The enchiladas, both the Rojo and Verde are really great. Something that will make you swear off any idea of going to a chain. The refried beans, comfort on a fork. The only downfall, the rice. But it might be because it was at the end of the day. But the other food made up for it. Food made with love. They, like many great cafes they are closed after lunch. I am going to return for breakfast. It is worth the drive to The edge of Highland Park for this HONEST tasty food.

Got $ 20? Well it’s enough to feed two people with fat appetites at La Abeja. Oh, Bee… The place where a 115 pound waif can eat like a 250 lb trucker and feel good about it. Yes, the food is made with lard. Yes, the menu is in Spanish. And yes, the incredibly friendly servers speak perfect English, and RBF(resting b! tch face) is not a fixture here as it might be at some frou-frou places in Beverly Hills. Don’t be surprised if the server’s children pour your water and offer you some of the M&Ms they’re eating. M&Ms and bean and cheese burritos; what a delicious combination! La Abeja has nothing on the menu over $ 15(almost everything is more like $ 6 or so), and it is a world away from Americanized«Mexican» fast food restaurants. Oh, there’s a man over there eating a fried tongue sandwich. Well, when in Rome… (Or Cypress Park) I had a fifteen minute conversation with the owner about The Three Stooges and Bela Legosi’s lawyer son. AWESOME. The«Chola’s Rock» bumpersticker I bought here($ 1.50) is also quite fetch. La Abeja is… Good for your wallet. Good for your tongue. Bad for your cholesterol and heart. Magic for your soul.

I’ve been coming to La Abjea Since I was a baby. The food is amazing, Homestyle Mexican. It is a family owned business, Roy & his lovely family have always been kind, hospitable and they run this place with them same staff since forever. Some of my favorites: Beautiful beans, flour tortillas made in house, delicious salsa, crispy flautas filled with machaca topped with fresh avocado and sour cream. On the weekends you can have the amazing Menudo, I mean the broth alone is killer. Oh the Champurado, another specialty. Thick, creamy, delicious cup of love. The place is a neighborhood staple. You will enjoy a nice hearty meal at such reasonable prices! You won’t regret it.

Pretty sure I ordered the wrong thing here. We order 2 breakfast chorizo burritos and a chili relleno burrito. The chili burrito was pretty delicious. It was a green chili stuffed with cheese then wrapped in a bean smothered tortilla shell. It tasted clean and was easy to eat. The breakfast burritos were a little too heavy. They tasted like fat and lard and pork. This might’ve been the worst breakfast burrito I’ve ever had. Not enough salt, not very tasty. I would not order a breakfast burrito here. Red chili salsa and green chili salsa was not that great. It was watery and thin but really spicy, which I like. The owner was eating something that looked super tasty when we walked it. It was an entrée. I think next time we’ll order something from the entrée menu. The chili relleno was actually delicious. It was spicy with a thick white cheese in the center. I would recommend ordering that entrée. The beans were delicious as well. The place itself is very inviting. Service is nice as can be. There’s plenty of free off-street parking. Price point is pretty high at $ 9 an entrée for Mexican food. I guess everything in LA is $ 9 tho. Must order the champurrado caliente. It’s thick and sweet, almost like a breakfast porridge. I’d order this again. I’d like to come back and try more items off the menu.

This mom and pop business is an amazing part of the Highland park area. The owners(husband and wife) still work here and are really nice. I always come her where I am craving a burrito with green sauce. Their meat is flavorful, burritos are huge, the green sauce is soooo tasty and the price is great! Parking is on the street. They can get pretty packed, so if you know what you want, you can call in your order. My family also likes their menudo.
