Those who gave good rating for this sushi place must never had tasted good sushi with good service. Don’t waste you money here unless you want mediocre sushi with bad service and rude sushi chef. Menu is very limited and overpriced for what they offered. To make things worse, the place was connected to an Indian restaurant with open walls so you have to smell strong spice odor while you eat your blend sushi and listen to loud conversation and noise next door. Another thing that was unpleasant was being forced to listen to snide remarks from customers from Indian restaurant cause they use Ji sushi door to exit. Even with a groupon deal it is a major waste and a very unpleasant experience. Now I know why they use groupon to attract customers. I will NEVER return here~!!!

We’re neighborhood locals and frequent Cowboys and Turbans quite often. We love Cowboys and Turban’s food and decided to give this place a try, as they are connected. This restaurant was a huge disappointment!!! WHYYOUSHOULDNOTGOTOTHISRESTAURANT: The menu is extremely limited — if you just want a california roll, you’re set. The miso tastes completely off The sushi was grocery store quality — it was not fresh and the ingredients felt like they were the left overs. The beer & saki is expensive. It feels like you’re eating in the walkway instead of a restaurant. DON’T GOTOTHISSUSHIRESTAURANT. We will not be returning.

Took mom here with a groupon, had a sushi combo(five sushi and one roll), rainbow roll, miso soup, and seaweed salad, enough for dinner for us. The fish was really fresh, loved yellowtail and white fish, and seaweed salad was super yummy! Rainbow roll was wrapped by all kinds of fresh fish and had crab meat inside the roll. so better not order rainbow roll along side California roll, lol There are two sushi chefs, both looked super legit! The restaurant itself is super tiny and is adjacent with another Indian restaurant. We went Thursday night around 6:30, parking was easy. But the restaurant is in a tiny plaza, it can be an issue during more busy hours.

Groupon brought me here. Decided make it a date and had a romantic evening eating raw fish in a quaint Sushi/Oyster bar. Hipster girl at the table over announced to the waiter that she was allergic to soy sauce. I’ll let you provide your own commentary. The chef was very accommodating and sweet to her… needs. A+! The Sashimi Combo was exquisite with yellow tail, salmon, white fish and tuna. Eat them slowly to appreciate the quality. The garlic albacore was a great treat as well. The crispy rice spice tuna was okay. The crispy rice was like a burn rice crispy treat without the sugar. Other crispy rice dishes that I’ve had at other places are only crispy on one side creating a dynamic texture. This rice(cracker) was one dimensional. Parking was a breeze, staff was friendly. Very expensive without the groupon, but the deal made it worth the price!

The service was great, the fish was incredibly fresh, but the prices are a few dollars too high for rolls and booze. The ambiance does not match the prices of the food, sadly. They need to step it up on the furnishings, and offer some more variety. It was cold and a little dingy. FOOD: I highly recommend the oysters and salmon sushi, along with the scallops.

I bought a Groupon for Ji Sushi so I wasn’t sure what to expect, especially after the mixed reviews here on Unilocal. However, I have nothing bad to say about Ji Sushi unless it’s that I would have preferred that there not be a big screen TV playing sports above the sushi bar. But we could have been seated at a table so I can hardly take stars off for a pet peeve. This little sushi restaurant is located in a mini-mall on Sunset Blvd(like so many others). The interior is great: there’s a cool light fixture above the sushi bar made from the skeleton of a(small) airplane wing. In the main dining room, many of the booths are made from the body and walls of old upright pianos, their insides exposed. There is also a nice outdoor patio with a big fire pit. Now, the food. I had a couple of oysters that were very large and very fresh and very tasty. I then tried the shitake sushi — it was a bit to sweet for me but I like the idea. In fact, all of their veggie sushi sounded really yummy. I also ordered the yellowtail sushi and a California roll. The yellowtail was delicious — like butter. Absolutely fresh. The California roll was perfect. My friend had a spicy tuna roll that I tried and it was just as it should be. After our meal, our entertainingly smart-assed sushi chef gave us a bowl of edamame. One of my pet peeves with many of the little sushi places scattered around LA is the badly cooked rice! If the rice is too gooey(ever had that psuedo-sushi they sell at Trader Joe’s?) or undercooked, not sticky or chewy or too sweet. Blerg. The rice at Ji is perfect. Ji is clean, the sushi chefs are sweet hearts, the fish is super fresh, and the menu is bare bones — just sushi.

Let me start off by saying the parking situation is horrible!!! We had to drive around the block a few times and finally had to park a couple of blocks away across the street. The lot is tiny and seems to always be packed… Moving on, we payed Ji Sushi a visit because we purchased a groupon. Once we got to the restaurant on a Sunday evening, I was surprised to see it pretty empty, which actually worked for me since I was starving and didn’t feel like waiting for a table. We were immediately greeted and seated by Joe, who also turned out to be our server. Joe was awesome and answered all questions we had about the food. Using the groupon was a breeze, no questions asked… We ordered a spicy tuna roll, a philadelphia roll, a caterpillar roll and some salmon sashimi. The salmon was fresh and delicious! The caterpillar roll was interesting due to the fact that it was our first time trying eel. It was recommended by Joe as being one of their popular rolls and we really enjoyed it. The philadelphia roll was good. You can never go wrong with salmon and cream cheese… As for the spicy tuna roll, that was the only roll that was pretty blah. The tuna was completely flavorless and no spice whatsoever. The only reason I MIGHT come back is to try Cowboys & Turbans which is another restaurant that shares the space with Ji Sushi. They had a back outdoor patio with a bar and a fire pit that looked pretty awesome!

Came here on Sunday for dinner. It’s quite cozy and a small little restrurant in LA. Food is good with the right company, obviously. Food is nice, but I just wished for more than the sashimi. I have had lots of sushi in the past 3 years of actual sushi, so I have higher expectations. But, come witht the right company, your night will be utterly awesome. Do try for yourself though. Don’t take my word for it, I speak for myself.

This definitely isn’t Jiro Dreams of Sushi. Horrible service –most likely not any fault of the servers. The owners don’t give a damn about training people. Menus are unclear and don’t list most things on there. No prices on the bottles of sake. Presentation of sushi is heinous. No ac. No thanks!

(Dined 10÷26÷12 F @ 9pm): Wad up, G… get your shucks on here(if you’re down wid dat), or simply roll wid it! Thanks to an offer from Groupon($ 40.00 of food for $ 20.00), my friend and I tried this relative newcomer(as were we), Ji Sushi, to the Silver Lake hood. After a long week of work and school, respectively, we planned all week to use the printed out offer and explore the eats of our new digs. Normally we would walk, but this was a bit to far from our pad, and frankly, we were just lazy. We entered through the bar/counter area) and immediately greeted by one of the sushi chefs and then seated by a tall male host/server. He was armed with menus and water came out right after. For a Friday night, we expected the place to be packed, but this wasn’t the case: two couples at the counter, one couple next to where we sat, and one other couple in the dining area. This worked in our favor as we starved ourselves for this night out because we were gonna throw it down! The menus were very limited(one-sided laminated for food and another for drinks — mostly sake), so it made ordering simple. With a stripped-down menu, the thought was the food should be precisely prepared and good; we shall see!!! After some discussion, here was the order: spicy yellowtail($ 6.00), spicy scallop roll($ 6.00), shrimp tempura roll($ 9.00), pumpkin roll($ 9.00), Aladdin Yuku sake for me($ 14.00), and Hatsumago Kimoto sake for me friend($ 15.00). While we waited, we discussed our day, watched the sushi chef craft his work, and watched pre-season(I was, anyway!) on the gigantic flatscreen behind the counter. Our sakes came out in cool little bottles and wine glasses to drink them in. The spicy yellowtail and spicy scallop rolls soon followed. You got eight pieces each but I was somewhat disappointed in the size of them as they were smaller than I’d hoped — we were hungry! But each tasted good and fresh. Each piece did tend to stick to each other which caused a few to slightly unravel, but every piece safely made it into our stomachs! Drop these bad boys into some wasabi and soy sauce, chase it with ginger and a sip of sake, and the weekend finally started! The shrimp tempura roll and pumpkin rolls came out once we polished off the other rolls. I must say, these were a definite step-up from the first two rolls both in size and taste(also eight pieces each). The shrimp was warm and crunchy(we both really looked for something crunchy), so success here. Now the pumpkin roll caught my attention and it seemed appropriate to order it tis the season. We were both very surprised by this unique combination! The sweetness of the cooked pumpkin laid on top of a veggie roll was perfection! This instantly became one of my favorite sushi rolls and will now be in search for other variations elsewhere. As a first-timer, I would recommend this roll as a must. Now my sake was more reminiscent of lemoncello, which I love, and was more suited as a dessert substitute, as it was very sweet. But it still went well with the meal. The other sake tasted like any other sake; nothing special, but I’m not a connoisseur by any means. All things considered, the service was good. Our host/server seemed to be the main person who covered the entire floor as we didn’t see anyone else(but I did notice the tall very attractive female in the main dining area who may have been a hostess for that entrance). I observed that he may have been on-the-job training as he would fumble a bit with the orders and at times slow to check on the diners(which would irritate some), but we were chillaxing, so it was all good. He was diligent about clearing our table of empty plates, too. The final bill was delayed, but he was very attentive with us and did fill out water glasses on numerous occasions(huge points here). Parking was a bit tough as they shared a small lot with several other businesses in a packed strip mall. Otherwise, metered street parking(until 8pm nightly) was available along Sunset Blvd. where we parked, and the numerous side streets in the neighborhood. Overall, Ji Sushi was a pleasant surprise and props to Groupon once again. Sure, I wished the menu was more robust and felt the prices could be slightly cheaper, but I’m sold on the pumpkin roll! I found some value as noted by the prices I quoted above(total bill was $ 35.00, which included Groupon and tip), but I agreed that the service needed to be worked on for the sake of others. The atmosphere was crammed in the bar area and dimly lit in the dining area. There seemed to be ample tables and chairs in the dining area. As mentioned, there was a TV in the bar area and they have Time Warner, so I may be here for Lakers games! The attire was casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. Although they accepted credit cards, they didn’t accept my credit card of choice… AMEX! 3.5 stars

Highlights: Food; parking Problems: Training; menus; prices Ji Sushi is a fairly small place, accommodating maybe 10 people total. It’s easy to find a spot to park, whether in the small lot, at a meter on the street, or on side streets in the neighborhood. The food is a little pricy, especially the specialty rolls, but not insane. The sushi doesn’t stand out for excellence, but I especially liked the eel and avocado roll as well as the scallop roll, and the pumpkin roll was unique. The main obstacle to a good experience here is the staff. The head chef behind the counter seemed to know what’s going on, but the servers seemed completely clueless about descriptions of the menu items, how to work the register, and what items went to which tables. The servers were also extremely slow and a little awkward(even if earnest and friendly). It seemed the epitome of on the job training, and the cogs of this machine required constant oiling from the head chef. I was also disappointed in the menus. First, the sake menu lists detailed descriptions of 6 or so types of sake – but has no prices. Having to ask and unpleasant surprises are both undesirable; just print the prices. I’m willing to pay for quality. Second, the main menu doesn’t list everything the restaurant sells. Why should I have to look around the restaurant to discover that I could have ordered beer or miso soup? What else am I missing, and why don’t you want me to know that I can order it? Finally, the restaurant is very small and directly behind the bar is an ENORMOUSTV(at least 50″). In a place this tiny it’s completely unavoidable and extremely distracting. Big negative. I didn’t come to a Japanese restaurant to watch sports. —- Verdict: 2.5 stars Nothing stands out here that would bring me back by itself, although the experience was pleasant enough. However, until the waitstaff gets some serious experience under their belts(and that TV goes) I would recommend avoiding Ji Sushi.

I have tried to eat at this place twice and have gotten terrible service both times. I am not someone who likes to complain but this place deserves the negative review. The first attempt to dine with my boyfriend we waited FOREVER! Not only did they have us wait a while but the waitress was cursing on the phone to a customer. She did NOT acknowledge that we were waiting and proceeded to chat on the phone. We had bad vibes just decided to cut our losses and leave without even being seated. So… A few weeks later we decided to go back at a time that wasn’t so busy and give them another chance. We arrived at 6:10pm and there was no lights and we asked if they were serving. The waitress seemed confused and asked the Sushi Chef he said yes. So we almost sat at the bar when we saw the freezer wasn’t working water was dripping on the fish and we asked if the freezer was working the chef replied no but was willing to serve us lukewarm sushi. Really? someone could seriously become ill. If I were the owner to this place I would be doing some house cleaning. Not cool at all.

I had a Groupon for this place so I can’t complain too much. However, this place needs a helping hand. Please put a «Help Wanted» sign in your window. The sushi chef can’t also be taking the drink orders, bussing the tables and doing the checks. He was definitely working hard so I give him credit for that but we didn’t get the beer we ordered… ever(it was taken off the bill so that’s cool). But the chef didn’t have any change so when I wanted to break a $ 20 to tip him I had to walk over to the neighboring restaurant Cowboys and Turbans and beg servers over there for change. All in all, I know this spot is brand new but they really need some staff. The food is nothing spectacular so it’s not worth the growing pains.

Oh my… really Groupon. really? I bought the deal $ 40 for $ 20, and my boyfriend and I decided to go check it out. It is a hole in the wall, and I am okay with that part, but what i wasn’t okay with was the AWFUL service. The waitress looked like she was lost and was arguing with the sushi chef really loudly in front of the guests. My plate and water cup had disgusting scum on it, the sushi chef was rude because he was fighting with his waitress who kept messing up peoples orders. When it came time to pay they took about 15 minutes to process the groupon, the whole place is a mess. The sushi it self was okay, nothing to rave about. I definitely wont be coming back.

I was excited to try this new local sushi joint but it disappointed. Sushi was mediocre and service was particularly bad(we had to engage 4 separate staff members for upwards of 20 minutes just to get our drinks order to the table). We left saying«let’s never eat there again». If you are in the area and craving Sushi then go to Los Feliz and try Pazzaz Sushi — the food is way better and the service is great.

Checked this place out with my wife the other day. Pretty cool spot! I do think the prices are a little inflated but I have to give it to them, they don’t cheap out on the fish and they’ll make any special request you want! You just need to ask! There was a groupon for the place, I would definitely recommend getting it and checking this place out. Btw, the people that works there are super nice!

I was really looking forward to this place based on the reviews and some recommendations from friends! However I was disappointed. The food wasn’t bad but it was very overpriced. $ 25 for a sashimi plate of 12 pieces. Little to spend-y for my taste and I’m usually all about blowing cash at sushi. All and all I think we spent almost $ 100 for 2 people and we just got the sashimi plate, small bottle of sake, a seaweed salad and 2 piece sushi. No AC — so its super hott right now. I can’t personally recommended this place. But I will say my roommate loves it and so do some of my friends so to each his own. The staff and Chef were all very nice and attentive as well.

Good thinking… We didn’t have good sushi right around here, so Ji Sushi fulfills a need. I’ve eaten here twice now… so far so good! Pleasant setting, friendly people, authentic, quality food.

Look away now, please, this place is horrible. Honestly, the 5 stars is a joke. I’m going to keep writing more and more words so you get tired of reading them and move on to the next place and I get to keep my awesome, quiet sushi joint all to myself. Alright, alright, fine. Great new sushi spot. Basic no frills menu with friendly, awesome chefs. The fish is fresh and the beer is cold. Nice size pieces of fish and if you don’t see what you want on the menu, ask and they could probably fix it up for you. Nice selection of saki as well. Definitely recommend going, ahem, I mean, don’t go…

a great new sushi spot in silverlake. We went the day after it opened and it didn’t seem like they were fully prepared to open shop. we asked for tea and oddly enough, they didn’t have any. the sushi selection was simple but i think once they figure out their clientele they will begin broadening the selection. i recommend sitting at the counter and watching Chris(the master sushi chef) create simple yet fanciful dishes. salmon orange sashimi is a must try! i don’t think it’s on the menu but we asked him to make it for us. he’s fun and serves up some great dishes! friendly staff. nice local spot for sushi lovers in the neighborhood.
