I think the only reason that Fat Sal’s got this rating was out of sheer amazement. At Fat Sal’s they really do it BIG. The concoctions of sandwiches they create are things my dreams cannot even come close to being made of. There are countless of sandwiches I have yet to try but I don’t think I could live to the end. The sandwiches are literally as big as your face and they stuff everything they can into it. It’d delicious, don’t get me wrong– but the only kind of person I think could crave and demolish a Fat Sal’s sandwich is a drunk pregnant lady expecting triplets(which is something we don’t want!) Which brings me to the beginning of my story… I was out with a couple of my girlfriends(no, I was not a drunk pregnant lady expecting triplets) and we had more than enough to drink– so we were STARVING. We knew there was only one place to suffice the angry howler monkey in our drunk tummies… FATSAL’s. I kid you not— that was probably the BESTFREAKIN’ SANDWICHOFMYLIFE.(but then again I couldn’t tell you where my left shoe was that night) All I can remember was that my food baby was huge and it was happy and satisfied. Me and my friends, trudged along(without a left shoe) and still half sandwiches in hand– we couldn’t finish them. We woke up at one of their apartments, remembering very little of the night. But the one thing we all could remember was our FREAKIN’ DELICIOUSOURTRIPTOFATSAL’S! We still talk about this story all the time and go there(sober) on occasion. The line is always out the door and onto the street/patio. But its really worth the wait and the experience.(PROTIP: To go is your best bet & Unilocal is linked up for orders) Moral of the story: GREATWHENDRUNKMUNCHIESHITBUTALSOGREATWHENEVER.

Definitely something you should try. The fat sandwiches are all delicious. Gets pretty busy at night. Sandwiches are big enough for two servings.

I wish they had a location near me :(but of course when you’re near UCLA, you have to have fat sals! this location is a bit inconvenient because seating is very limited(more of a to-go place) and you either have to park in the lot between fat sals for $ 7 or look for street parking near by. I don’t even recall what my friend and I ordered but they were both really good. We got the gravy fries, which were okay. Nothing too crazy. but I’ve never really understood why people like gravy and fries. my go to sandwich is the one with carne asada and guac. but I decided to go with a different one, the one with lettuce, avocado/guac, fries, ham, spicy sauce, chicken, but it was really good. my friend got the one with fries, chicken, buffalo sauce and he really liked it.

I legit can’t eat at this place without feeling my heart clog but you know what you’re in for if you are thinking of eating at a place called«Fat Sal’s». The sandwiches are amazing if you do eat it.(and quite frankly, it’s still healthier than your average«bacon wrapped burger-quinoa bake»… so if you can stomach anything bacon wrapped, you can handle here just fine) I usually get the Banh Miki or Killer Korean BBQ as they’re actually rather light while still having a LOT of awesome flavor. Are you attending UCLA and have a friend who’s really, really freaking high or drunk? There is no better place than here. Seriously. None. Does your friend from the midwest need to eat meat because they are sick of Californian food? Take them here. Looking for healthier option? Guess what, you’re in luck as you can go to the falafel place near by and eat healthy next door while your meat eating friends enjoy here.(They do have salads actually, btw… but if you’re vegan, the falafel next door is probably your only choice as far as I know…) I really do appreciate that the guys here don’t boot me out for having the falafel while the rest of my friends have a Fat Sal’s sandwich.(I try to eat the falafel while standing from the outside so I don’t take up precious seat space though) The employees are always nice… like I’d totally understand a bad day or two, but I have seen none from them from the dozens of times we came here. Great customer service each time when I actually do get a sandwich. If you order delivery, they’re great too, btw. :)

Omg!!! Literally life changing experience. So I came here with a friend who wanted me to try a Fat Sals sandwich. I thought to myself that it can’t be that special. Come to my surprise that it was amazing and probably the best sandwich I’ve had by far. I believe I got the Fat Sals sandwich with roast beef, French fries, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, brown gravy with a garlic hero. Soooo delicious. The roast beef was super juicy and the sauces complimented them so well. He portion is generous too(: I am so upset cuz I live in Irvine and wish that there was a location there! HIGHLY recommend this place. It’s a small place with a little window where you can watch them cook your food. Very cute. Dirty, but cute

I had this feeling before I went there that this was drunk food. Unfortunately, I wasn’t adequately prepared. I am thoroughly not a fan of this place. I thought that all the ingredients together would be delicious: mozzarella sticks, chicken, french fries, etc. but I can’t do it. I can eat an entire pizza on my own, eat two double doubles animal style with fries and a milkshake, but Fat Sal’s is my limit. I cannot eat at this place, it’s too greasy, too cheesy, too fried, and way too ketchupy. No thanks. Sorry Sal, you’re definitely not just«big boned.»

Who knew so much food packed in between bread could be so good. I ordered the fat Jerry and it was quite delicious. All the ingredients complimented each other nicely. The mozzarella sticks gave it a cheesy flavor and was cooked so it was perfectly crisped. The steak, egg, chicken, French fries, bacon, ketchup and mayonnaise made a beautiful combination. The steak and egg was slightly over salted and that overpowered the rest of the ingredients a little bit. The ketchup and mustard were not spread out enough so some bites there was a lot of ketchup and some bites there was none. Besides that, it was a one of a kind, delicious sandwich that you can enjoy at any hour of the day for a nice meal.

Went here on Sunday night with a friend. Not a lot of places were still open so we decided to try Fat Sal’s and oh my… we were NOT disappointed. A man who worked there helped recommend some sandwiches for us because the menu was quite overwhelming. Everything looked amazing so it was extremely difficult to choose what we wanted! We decided to split a Fat Jerry and bacon cheeseburger fries. Once our order was ready we jumped in the car, excited to get back to our friends apartment and make everyone else super jealous of our late night munchies. It worked. Once we were back, everyone could smell the incredible aromas coming from our bag of goods. We decided to share with everyone because the portion sizes were so large. Everyone agreed it was a hit! This is for sure our new place to go whenever we are in the area and craving some ridiculously delicious grub. Thanks, Fat Sal’s!

I think this is a nice place to have nearby! If I’m hungry and don’t feel like walking far, Fat Sal’s will always be right there with open arms. Once, I came late around midnight, the line was long. The second time, I came around lunch time, where there was only one person in front of me, so I thought, «perfect, short line = receive food faster.» Something was going on that day that I don’t know about, cause it didn’t look like a lot of people were waiting on orders, although they did seem busy making a lot of sandwiches… so it took a while to get my order in(maybe 15min? I dunno, I was busying myself with my phone), but when they took it, the food came out fairly quickly. The guy who took my order and the other one who input my order into the cash register were both nice about the whole timing thing, so all is forgiven. I tried the Buffalo Chicken Cheese Fries because I love buffalo sauce, especially in combination with the blue cheese. I found the buffalo sauce taste to be a bit weak, but it was still an overall good and filling(and probably super unhealthy) meal. I’ll most likely be back to try some other things off their menu, maybe at a less busy time. Although they have a seating area, it’s not really a great place to sit down and eat due to the small area, so I would recommend ordering this whenever you want some to-go food.

This is college translated into something edible. Basically, it’s a whole bunch of stuff thrown together that sounds gross in theory, but it’s so yummy and awesome when you bite in it. Sure, you’ll regret the 50 extra lbs you put on the next morning, but boy is it good in the moment. The sandwiches are good, but the real winner is the Carne Asada Fries. Oh my goodness, please get them for your own sake! It’s regular fries showered with guacamole, sliced beef, sour cream, lettuce, garlic aioli, jalapeños, and cheese to top it off. You spear your fork into that jungle of diabetes and get a little bit of each. Slightly spicy, a little creamy, overload on sodium. Perfect for during that 2 am drunken state of hunger and confusion. Now, this is not your fine dining meal! Please understand this. You may not enjoy it nearly as much at 11 am for lunch than, say, well, a point in time when you should really be in bed. But hey, that’s the glory of Fat Sals! It understands exactly what its doing, giving you traditionally cheap/bad-for-you food, but adding just a little bit of bougie(think garlic aioli-esque touches) to bring it to the next level. Not the cheapest, around $ 7 – 13 for a meal, but eating here is really an experience in its own right.

Needed a good on the go meal near UCLA, luckily they’re to go pick up system was synchronized with Unilocal.Looking at the menu, this was something like no other so we knew this was a MUST. Ambiance Parking: We got here on a Saturday around 5pm. There is parking space behind that you do have to pay for. Generally so I would recommend to pick up and go. Seating: * Seating is quite limited too. It can probably accommodate 15 – 20 people. In a shaded outside patio. Feels: * Right across from UCLA and in the busy streets of the city. Great place to people watch and just enjoy the El Lay culture. If you’re a tourist far or local, their cuisine is one of a kind. Nothing extremely unique but just a simple clever concept of sandwiching appetizers. Food: Fat Sal(A-OK/Recommend) I was most looking forward to this sandwich. The bread was crispy and the elements were all in their however though there was juice from the oil and cheese, it lacked moist and kick from a sauce. I would recommend adding some ranch or other sauces they sell for better flavor. Fat Jaimie(Recommend) I actually liked this better. Perhaps because it wasn’t dry and had a good mix of flavors from the guac and the pepper providing good flavor and kick all between that junk. Customer Service: N/A-My home girl picked up the sandwich while I parked but ordering it online was easy! Overall: 4.5 stars. Price was about right, order was punctual, food was guiltily delicious and unique. It definitely fulfilled but not defeated(I was kind of hoping to make 3 meals out of this). I would definitely recommend these to those that are in for something different and don’t care about calorie burning. Till next time, Fat Sal! TL;DR Tips: * Order online to beat the rush and reduce the parking hassle

Guess you can’t be in Westwood and not eat at fat sals! After much research on Unilocal,I decided I wanted to get the fat banh mi-ki since I love vietnamese food. My boyfriend got the colossal. We decided to split half half because I wanted to try both. We came on a Saturday at 7 and the wait for the food was pretty long, no one even came to take our order since it was so busy. We stood at the window for five minutes before we decided to grab drinks and come back. We ended up back here around 830 and it was much better! Hardly any wait. We were so hungry we decided to eat there. I was a little surprised they didn’t have any sriracha but the sandwich was still good! I thought it’d be odd with onion rings but it only made it better! The colossal was good but I prefer the banh mi ki! Definitely a great place to try. Best bet is to find street parking since the parking lot is pricier.

Everyone knows that Fat Sal’s is the place to go when it’s 2 am and you are too lazy to cook your instant noodles. From mozzarella sticks to carne asada stuck inside a Hero(that’s the superpowered bread that they use), there is a delicious concoction for everyone. Fat Sal’s was actually the first place I ever ate at in Westwood. And it is definitely worthy of its legacy. My arteries are clogging just thinking about it. The seating is very sparse and cramped. And it always seems like people are blocking the sidewalk with their cars. But who can blame them. When you need Fat Sal’s, nothing else matters. Once you are even within a block of this place, the savory smells will ensnare your wallet – I mean your nose. So just fork up that college tuition and spend it at Fat Sal’s already.

You know those nights when you do something you tend to regret the next morning? When you’re eating something so delicious yet your far-from-sober mind is telling you to stop? Fat Sal’s is the answer to both these questions. After a night of drinking, and all you’re craving for is carbs and water, this is the perfect place to go. It was my first time going out at UCLA and my friend told me this was like the Freebirds of UCSB(Which I must say, is better, both sober and drunk ;)). Fat Sal’s is a small little shop with limited outdoor seating, but is the prime place to go for drunchies and future heart attacks. Service is friendly and fast, which is just what you would want when you have hangry drunkie friends with you. There’s Fat Sandwiches, a variety of fries(Chili Cheese, BBQ chicken, pepperoni pizza, etc), wraps, salads(?), and more. **If you’re a vegetarian, WARNING. There’s only one option on the menu that is veggie-friendly, which is the veggie wrap. but even vegetarians, come on, why would you want that for drunchies? My friend and I ordered the Fat Jerry.(Be prepared.) It comes with mozzarella sticks, french fries, chicken fingers, mayonnaise, ketchup, cheesesteak… I don’t wanna know what else. The Fat Sandwich(9.99) truly is fat. It’s huge and, even when drunk, I would recommend sharing with one other person. That way, you’d have only half the regret the next morning ;) This sandwich was. disgustingly delicious. It was packed with so much fried stuff, yet I couldn’t stop eating it. Honestly, I couldn’t, or, shouldn’t, come again. However, if you do come to visit UCLA, please give it a try for me. You’ll love and hate me for it.

Int. Apartment. Day Skinny Sal: You know what sandwiches need? Mozzarella sticks right in there. And maybe some french fries, and a fried egg, and chili. Friend 1: Shut up skinny Sal, that would never work. Abandon your dreams of one day owning your own sandwich place– with crazy ideas like that it will never happen. Friend 2: Yea, who’s gonna buy a sandwich from someone called skinny Sal anyway? Skinny Sal: Oh I’ll show you both, I’LLSHOWALLOFYOU!!! Cut to: Training Montage Skinny Sal in a lab with bunson burners and… lab equipment testing sandwiches. Skinny Sal Eating overstuffed monstrosities 80s music. Cut to: Fat Sal, now a man, his sandwich art perfected. Lines of customers around the block. Women through their underwear at him, men want to be him. Fade out When I first heard about Fat Sal’s I assumed it would be sort of bad, but that I’d eat it anyway. Most places that try to over stuff a sandwich with odd ingredients end up not being good– the things inside don’t go together, are all randomly under or overcooked, the sandwich just collapses in your hands etc. I was wrong, I WASSOOOWRONG. Sure some of the sandwiches sound crazy, but everyone I have gotten has been delicious and has worked. The Fat Bruin is definitely my favorite but I have had just about everything on the menu and would eat it all again. I will say I am less of a fan of the fries. They all sound so good, but in practice they just can’t live up to the amazingness that is the sandwiches.

I forgot how much I loved this place. It’s a shack so you pretty much order, pick up your food at a window, and peace out or find a limited seat and make a mess there, all in about 20 minutes. I ended up here with my friend because of the dreaded drunchies and I ended up trying a signature hero for the first time, whereas I usually share a fat sandwich or get sides only. We got glorious grilled chicken(hey, trying to be healthy here) and the colossal carne asada and split half our sandwiches with each other. The colossal carne asada was so delicious and actually tasted healthier than the grilled chicken. It’s not one of the first things on the ingredients list so you don’t notice it much but the honey bbq sauce on the grilled chicken is very overpowering and for those who don’t like saucey, it’s a bit much. Got all over my hands. The guac and veggies on the carne asada sandwich was just right and it tasted very fresh. Got the job done and we were in an out of there in no time. A fan but sine I don’t want to become Fat Sal, I’ll have to wait another year before I come back.

Oh Lordy. Family cheat meal and the In ‘n Out line was larger than my wife’s patience. We decided to check out Fat Sal’s after seeing it in my bookmark list. I had half of their Fat Jerry with some onion rings. Both were excellent. My wife had their Italian sub and junior got a plain cheeseburger and, his favorite, some fries. Parking was $ 5. This may be a once-per-year event for us, but it was great.

I have heard so much about this place that features«Fat» sandwiches, I made the 45 min drive from my office in Torrance to meet a friend. Fat Sal’s is partially owned by Jerry Ferraro(Turtle, of Entourage fame), was featured on DDD, and is located on Gayley just North of Weyburn in Westwood. Adjacent lot is $ 8, but there is less expensive public parking around the corner on Broxton. Sal’s features«Fat» sandwiches with multiple ingredients for $ 9.99, and single ingredient sandwiches for $ 7.99. I opted for the Fat Joey(pastrami, turkey, melted swiss, cole slaw, fries and Russian dressing). My friend opted for the Fat Banh Mi-Ki(grilled steak, Vietnamese pickled veggies, Szechuan slaw, onion rings, tomato, jalapenos, cilantro, teriyaki glaze, sriracha, and mayo — sorry, no pic). We also split seasoned fries w/fat sauce($ 3.99). If you want a bottle of water, it is 51 cents more with the seasoned fries combo. Unfortunately, my sandwich was just OK. The bread was nicely toasted on the grill, but there was hardly any pastrami or turkey. It should have been re-named the Skinny Joey. Honestly, what I tasted the most was the cole slaw. Nonetheless, the ingredients tasted fresh: 3 Stars. My friend thought the same about his sandwich. What’s phat about a sandwich that is lacking in meat!!! Lastly, the fries were just OK too. They were nice & crispy, but the seasoning was nothing special, and the fat sauce was basically thousand island dressing. In addition, the price was high compared to the portion: 3 Stars. Regarding the ambiance, this place is a shack with a few stools. Yes it has character, but where do you eat if all the stools are taken?: 3 Stars. The service was pretty good. The food came out quickly, and the workers were polite: 3 Stars. DDD should be renamed Diners Drive-Ins and«Disappointments», because there is not one place that has been featured and I visited, that I thought was really good. I have been to Beer Belly in KTown, Paul’s Coffee Shop in Fountain Valley, and Bread Crumb Ohana in Huntington Beach: All were overrated. Yes, this place is open until 3 am. However, like most late night places, it tastes good at the time, but the payback is a b*tch the morning after — LMAO!
