SCAN Health Plan

This place is terrible. Do not make the mistake I did. Once you sign up, you can’t cancel until next open enrollment. This isn’t the same as Medicare. Scan is a Scam in my opinion.

This company is a total scam!!! The catahters that I paid 0 for from anthem now costs co pay of $ 1,100. for 3 months supply have to get rid of these total parasites. These people all they do is talk and deny. What pieces of crap!!!

My experience with Scan was horrific. The doctors in their health plan kept putting me off with one excuse after another. I kept asking for a referral to a Orthopedic doctor as my right knee was swollen twice it’s size and was extremely painful. I was put off again and again. Finally my PC doctor told me that I HAD to have a cortisone injection before I could be referred. I told the doctor that I didn’t do well with cortisone but I finally agreed so I would be able to see a Orthopedic dr. Within a week I was in the ER with a septic knee. I had tried to call my PC doctor and the receptionist either told me that she wasn’t in or sent me to voice mail and the calls were never returned. In the ER he Doctor told me that I was critically ill. A Orthopedic doctor cleaned my knee and purposely took out my meniscus. I was told this by the Infectious Disease Dr who was in the OR with the Orthopedic clown. I spent a week in the hospital and then was transferred to a recovery convalescent owned by guess who the orthoped doctor. O yes he was the husband of my PC… When I went home I was on IV antibiotic for a month. A nurse came to my home every day to change the IV. When a new enrollment came around I went back to Medicare, why? I wasn’t ready to die yet even though I am a senior citizen. I have more horror stories about friends and relatives dealing with Scan. My sister was taken off her Coumadin and died from blood clots in her heart and lungs. My friend from an organization I belong to died of a heart attack because his Scan doctor couldn’t figure out what was wrong even though my friend knew it was his heart and he simply gave up. He was dead 3 weeks later. Another friend started to complain of severe pain in her abdomen. Her Scan doctor allowed her to have a colonoscopy in January, 2015 and the results were good no polyps. The pain continued, I begged her to get rid of Scan but she wouldn’t. They put her off and put her off. Finally in August of 2015 they did a cat scan. They put her off and put her off with the results. I finally begged her to let me accompany her to the doctor. This was in November. The specialist was on vacation and moved up the next appointment once again. We went to see her PC doctor together. I told the PC that if she couldn’t give us the results of the cat scan that my friend and I were going to go to the lab and I would tell her the results. The PC said that she would ask for a copy and give us the results. The doctor left the room and returned in a few minutes. (not the time it would have taken to get the results from the lab) She returned to the room and said «I am afraid I have bad news. The disease has spread to her liver». She then asked me if I knew what that meant. I answered that it has Metastasized to her liver. She said yes. That Friday we returned to the Specialist and he gave us the same information again. I interrupted him and said «You mean cancer don’t you?» He nodded his head. By this time the pain was unbearable. He gave us a prescription for Norco and told us that she could go to the ER on Sunday. I asked if he couldn’t see how much pain she was in. He finally said if it is too bad go in this evening but make sure you go to the ER I can’t have you admitted. One month later she was dead. I hope and pray that one day Scan will be held responsible for all that they do against seniors. You may ask why hasn’t anyone sued them. Families are in too much pain, I personally didn’t want to have to go through the humiliation and battle that I would have had to wage. I did ask Medicare to allow me to see different Orthopaedic Surgeon but I was denied by Scan and Medicare.

Do not be fooled by the positive reviews. I was diagnosed with Bladder cancer this year. I called all available specialists in my area. Either I was told they were no longer accepting SCAN or the wait for an appointment was two months. If I had not called member services and demanded a supervisor and demanded that they initiate an appointment I might be dead. Scan stinks. Do not be fooled the positive reviews the reviews must be contrived.

Should be called SCAM for the way they seduce elderly Medicare patients into turning over their insurance to SCAN. All of the patients I have seen who have had the misfortune of being scammed by SCAN did not realize that they no longer have the same benefits as they did when they had straight Medicare. They do not understand the policy and SCAN doesn’t seem inclined to explain this to people. Patients who come into my practice with SCAN have the option of paying out of pocket (ouch!) or trying to find a provider in the paltry SCAN network that will take this insurance. Buyer beware!
I’m surprised the insurance commissioner allows them to continue to play their scam on vulnerable elderly patients.

I am writing on behalf of my wife. My retirement company did away with insurance benefits and we were required to acquire outside coverage. We did although we both had to go with separate insurance companies. She went with SCAN last June to begin August 1.
Her ID card never arrived so on August 13 she called to inquire. She reached customer service where she was met with excellent service.
This man took his time and explained everything in detail to her. Her pharmacy needs had to be addressed along with the missing ID card.
She is new to SCAN and hopefully her contact and needs with the company will be few or if not, she will receive similar service as she did today. Perhaps she lucked out from this gentleman in customer service. Hi FIVE to SCAN today anyway.

Totally unprofessional. I interviewed for a management job at their headquarters and my crappy experience is consistent with the crappy reviews I have seen about SCAN.
I am only commenting on my job interview experience there – not my use of their health insurance.
The HR department is really shady and unprofessional. They are really elusive when they answer your questions. They never call you back when they say they absolutely will. They make abrupt scheduling changes without notifying. It goes on and on. If you ask…
Q: «why are there so many vacancies in the department?»
A: «why do YOU think there are vacancies in the department»?
Q: «I was wondering what the pay range is for this job?»
A: «what do YOU think the pay is for this job?»
Q: «I’m not sure, but i think it is a fair question to ask? I’ve gone through several rounds of interviews now»
A: «it is our policy not to discuss that with you. Would you please tell us what you are earning at YOUR job now?»
Q: «i have advanced through multiple rounds of interviews with SCAN, but I also have another job offer at a different company. As you requested, I have delayed giving that other company my decision as long as possible. Would you mind letting me know if you reach a decision soon. If no decision, would you mind calling me next week to let me know anyway?»
A «Sure! You bet we will!!»

You wont get many emails from them because I think they dont want a trail of documentation of how they do their work. It is a phone call or a surprise change in schedule when they see you. They often did not leave messages when I could not pick up the phone. Really shady.
I totally, sincerely appreciate the opportunity. But why do you make candidates go through these deceitful games and experience your dishonest double talk? I am only sharing a few of my MANY bizarre, unprofessional, almost ghetto moments with these guys.

Now you can proceed to read the other reviews from people who actually used SCAN’s services. Is it a surprise that there are so many complaints?

They should change their name to SCAM.
Most inept organization. They keep sending threatening notices even though you are paid up.
If you can’t find another provider where you live, best to pack up your belongings and move to another place that has a better choice than these guys.

I can’t speak for the complete SCAN experience but for my in-​laws’ part of it. I absolutely believe that the quality of care you receive depends on the continuity of doctor care. I totally agree with the negative reviews if the wrong dr. group is chosen. It is prudent for all of those who get SCAN to investigate thoroughly the Physician group they choose and even the doctors within a certain office, the wait times, the amount of time it takes to get an appointment, and the quality of care.
My in-​laws have been with SCAN for over 30 years with a particular Dr. group. My mother-​in-​law received negligent care and ended up dying needlessly of bladder cancer even though she had been complaining to her Dr. about her problem over 2 years. It wasn’t until I got involved that she was allowed to see a urologist and by then it was too late. Note to friends and family — get involved. I complained to upper management within the Dr. group. The doctor was gone within the month; my dear mother-​in-​law was gone within 6.
Recently, the care within the office my father-​in-​law was connected with has deteriorated markedly. Again, for the third time in a year, my father-​in-​law has been referred to a new physician when he could not wait for 2 hours for a schedulted appointment to see the results from his physical from a doctor he had been assigned in January who was seeing clients for his last week with the dr group (which was another thing of which Dad had not been informed). The wait to see a new dr? A month. I finally interfered which I should have done years ago and got Dad transferred to a doctor at my doctor’s office who is from the same doctor group as his old dr. but a different office (confusion reigns when the Dr. groups start being swallowed by each other) and comes highly recommended. Wait time? 3 days. When you’re 96, there is little wait time when you arrive, and you only have to wait 3 days for an appointment, it’s time to break out the happy dance.
My point is – the quality of care you receive varies even within the doctor groups who serve SCAN. It behooves both recipients and family to investigage the quality of care each doctor gives and to make an informed choice.

I have been with scan 5 years, I could not be happier, and would never consider switching. Customer service is unbelievable, and &$ 500 for hearing aids came in handy this year. Thanks Scan! Keep it up!

If you are thinking about choosing Scan as your Health provider think again.
I was with Kaiser for many years before deciding to leave due to their influx of new patients.
I wanted a small but well rounded Health Plan and I decided upon Scan.
Let me tell you they say that they have a network that range from physicians to specialists in all areas of the health industry.
Don’t believe them!
You set up an appointment two weeks in advance just to learn that the doctor you are scheduled to see is no longer in the network.
What kind of middleman health plan does this to it’s patients? I had a cold that was so bad that I had aches and pains from my neck to my lower back. I couldn’t get an appointment for 2 days. When I’m hurting I want to see someone now, maybe the next day but how long does a body have to wait for care on their network?
Scan doesn’t even have a hospital or clinic they just farm the customers out to local sites and you never get a feeling that Scan is there for you.
I have had my issues with Kaiser in the past but by far Kaiser was always able to see me the same day even if I had to wait 2 – 3 hours in the ER.
And with Kaiser they have Hospitals and Clinics to go to. When I had an issue with one of the staff at Kaiser I could always ask for a supervisor. Can’t do that at Scan.
Scan is not accountable for anything.
It makes me ask this question to all of you.
Does anyone at Scan have Scan as their Health care provider?
You can see there are a lot of negative reviews of Scan and I am sure there are plenty more that their older customers wish they could make known.
You don’t have to learn this lesson like the rest of us writing these reviews just look a little harder and take your hard earned money else wear.

I am no longer with scan I am back with Kaiser.
Kaiser still has a long waiting time but hands down a better
Heqlth plan then Scan.

This is a warning to all who are considering joining SCAN. Just as most of the reviews, there is a real problem with this company which is in charge of taking care of our elderly. I especially have to agree with Gabriel, in order to get care you need to be close to death.
My 85 year old grandmother has been denied 3 times for items to which medicare would not deny for her care. A hospital or bed rails, which you would think would be provided since she is bed ridden, unable to care for herself. In addition knowing she has a history of falling off her bed and breaking her leg on at least twice. Then denying her in-​home psychical therapy for the broken leg which was caused from falling off the bed. Lastly, denying her short term care in a rehabilitation nursing home for her broken leg. To which, she had a doctor’s note requesting that it would be in her best interest until she can care for her own. We went through proper channels and had all the paperwork necessary for all our request and now we have to appeal which can take another 30 days for them to tell us yes or no. The bureaucracy that this company puts you through is outrageous and healthcare shouldn’t be this hard for the elderly. Luckily my grandmother has my aunt and myself on her side, I wonder how many other people are in the same predicament. I have advised my aunt to dis-​enroll her in the SCAN program and put her in another medicare program, since this is the time period to do so until Feb 14.

I have been with SCAN health plan for the past 6 months. Selecting a PCP is not bad because there is quite bit of choice. But getting approvals to see a specialist is some thing else. The Primary care doc has to send a referral, then it may take 5 — 7 working days for the referral to be approved or denied. When they do approve the referral, most of the time, the specialists they contract with are very sub standard people. I got referrals for a urologist, orthopedic, and a dermatologist. All of them were very unsatisfactory. In fact the dermatologist, Dr. Hala Kudsi performed a unnecessary biopsy procedure on my neck thinking that I am some one else with a PPO insurance (her staff handed her the wrong patient folder who had a PPO insurance). These people should look at the patient reviews before signing up the specialists. I had enough of this circus. Luckily I am in a reasonably good health but if I should fall sick and hospitalized or need nursing home care, I have very little confidence in their specialists or services. It is a shame that they contract with Medicare and provide such sub standard service to their members. When a primary care physician gives a referral to see a specialist, why should it take 5 — 7 working days to get the approval? That layer should be completely taken out because the primary care doctor would not give a referral unless he or she deems it necessary. (I was with Kaiser prior to this and there is no approval layer there. The PCP gives referral to a specialty dept and in fact THEY call you in a day or two to make the appointment). And after you get the approval to see the specialist, you call the specialist office and most of the time, they cannot see you for several weeks or months and you may probably get a lot sicker or may even die by the time you get to see the specialist. And the emergency is not so great either because they do not have the specialists there and you may have to get referred again through the painful channels. Yes, Scan’s premiums are low but their procedures are awful, so if you can afford it, ditch SCAN and get the regular medicare with some supplement plan and you will have your choice of doctors.,

My mother is on her death bed because of the doctors they provided. Health Care Partners. If you end up in the ER the number one Objective is to get you out as soon as possible regardless if you’re still ill. If your eyes are open and your heart is beating you’re ok accruing to them. Shame on them both.

You people think HMO is here to help you? Wrong! it is another way to make money by taking the max from what social security allocates for each patient. You can select Medicare but HMO promises you dental, hearing aid, eye glasses, transportation. etc. Of course, to max their profit, they have to cut corners by using third-​world doctors, low grade medication, or delay services.
There is no free lunch. The minute you sign up after their fancy presentation, you are a trapped loser.

I’m reading the reviews, and am actually quite surprised.
My experience with Scan has been Very different.
I have an Excellent doctor, who I can get an appointment with at the drop of a
hat. I’ve been in for back pain, and other concerns. I received Excellent treatment, with my doctor. He’s the the first insurance doctor I’ve had who actually gives a rats behind. He takes the time to actually listen to me, and
than takes action to get me well.
I was sent to physical therapy, which was also covered by Scan. Great Therapist!

My prescriptions are covered, with No hassles.
Most importantly, I’ve been to the emergency room Twice this year, for the first time in my life. The co pay was $ 65.00, ambulance paid for, and my care at my hospital was excellent. Three day stay, and out, with no billing hassles, or bs.
Customer service calls are always helpful, and I find the people at Scan quite helpful.
Maybe it’s because I had another health care provider through my employer who royally Sucked!!! You’d have to see your Primary, than be transferred to other, «Specialist’s,» before they would probably deny what you needed anyway. I”ve not experienced this here. I guess I picked the right doctor.
Pick your doctor carefully, and I think you’d be quite pleased.
Oh, I’ve Never received Any kind of letter from Scan, threatening to cancel me. Just sayin.

Okay, here’s the deal.
I’ve been with scan health plan for over two years now.
Let’s just say I’m not at all happy about their behavior. –1 star.
They were not exactly my number one choice, however because of the area I live in, they were the ONLY choice — which was NOT a choice.
I’ll have to narrow it down to one of my biggest complaints which is that I receive threats from them every month that they will drop my coverage. Now, they know that I’ve been paying every month. My checks clear on time, but they still insist on harassing letters. I’m on edge every single month. I guess this is how they treat people.

The main reason I signed on for SCAN was the benefit of a ride from my home to doctor appointments.
Yesterday I used the service for the first time and ended up standing outside in the cold 50 minutes then having to find a neighbor to drive me as the ride provided by SCAN never showed up.
I want to just quit and find another health provider as this experience was so unprofessional, from the way it happened to the way the personnel handled it. One phone call from a woman who said, the driver would «be there in twenty minutes, I mean forty minutes» then 50 minutes later he still was not there, and I’d been standing outside at the front entrance most of that time because I did not want to make myself anymore late than I already was going to be.
Then I had to pay a neighbor to drive me and I got there late and it affected the entire appointment as I was so rattled.
So that is my feedback on SCAN’s transportation service. I would have been better off taking the bus.
As for the doctor, if I go back, I’m going to ask to see a physician’s assistant, as I found the nurses here in Lancaster to be Very Professional caring and willing to listen. Then the doctor entered the room, and the appointment was all down hill from there. The doctors they hire are all from third world countries which makes their interviewing skills really bad. I have been to worse in free clinics, when I was without health insurance.
AND the rest of the staff is great.
I suggest they get rid of the Doctors and just use the nurse practitioners, we’d all get better treatment and they would save money on salaries.

My 91 year-​old father was discharged prematurely from a rehab facility after having had two surgeries within a week of each other. I appealed through SCAN’s sub contractor appeals department. Appeal DENIED. They reported that the rehab facility staff physician agreed with the discharge date. My father ended up on life support the very day he was discharged, due to a pulmonary embolism. His life support was removed approximately 3 weeks later. I lost my wonderful, life-​loving dad right before Christmas. Prior to his two (successful) surgeries, my father was living alone, driving, traveling… enjoying life. I honestly do not know if there’s culpability here, but I intend to find out. I am absolutely devastated.

I am sitting here in shock as I write this review.
I can’t believe what just happened. I am a new member and have a prescription for blood pressure medication. I always keep an ample supply and have another weeks worth of meds. I called today to schedule an appointment. No problem — just wait six weeks.
WT — six weeks for an appointment and I can’t make a doctor substitution. I have two choices
1) Die
2) Go to an emergency room.
All I require is a simple 10 minute check-​in.
I can not put into words my disappointment in SCAN.
Foot Note: Before posting this review, I decided to call the sales office and speak to the nice employee who enrolled me. Since she was a temporary employee, she wasn’t available. However whoever answered the phone had the presence of mind to call the pharmacy and I spoke to a pharmacist. He advised me to take my medication to any local large chain pharmacy and most likely they will provide a refill for me. After talking to a rational human being I raised my review to show two stars.
