Piping hot Americano served with a charming smile at City Market. I’ll be back for the coffee flight and another five star review.

I was up in the Castleton area on a Sunday afternoon desperate to find local coffee for the week. Good news, Unilocalers: Mile Square is at Whole Foods! FTW!(Actually, Whole Foods is one of 16 locations in the Indy area — check their website) The coffee is EXCELLENT. I’ve tried the Crossroads Blend, Rocket 88 Blend(you can drink/purchase it at Rocket 88), Guatemala Single Origin, and Papua New Guinea Single Origin. The Guatemala Single Origin has been my favorite so far because the flavors are the boldest. It’s the jolt this non-morning person needs to wake up and take on the day. I’m looking forward to taking a cupping class, because based off of the introductory tutorial I got at the Rocket 88/Mile Square Meet the Maker event(Thanks, Unilocal!), owner Trace and his team know their stuff. Until then, I’ll continue trying more flavors and keeping Mile Square in my coffee rotation.

Stopped in at the roastery after I barely missed the mobile café at Indy Winter Farmer’s Market. Picked up a fabulous single origin Papua New Guinea roast that was ground perfectly for my french press as requested. Trace was so friendly and inviting. I can’t wait to attend the coffee classes when they fire up!

The Hammer and Anvil blend is a nice balanced cup, not as strong as French or Italian roast but more body than Guatemalan or Ethiopian. The whole beans grind up nicely, not too dry(which would produce dust like grounds) and not too wet(which would produce large course grounds). As a daily coffee drinker I would def recommend their coffee, I have not tried the truck yet, just got stuff from the Coffee Crawl.

Mile Square Coffee Roastery was the second stop on our caffeine crawl. The physical location is at the corner of Ray & Charles — but this physical location is mostly a cozy, cool production space and the actual product is brought to you via Café Mobile — a coffee truck! Look for them at Pacer’s games, on Mass Ave, and other local events. Trace — the owner — is the coolest. He was very welcoming and personable. He grew up just a few streets over from this location in the 60s — it was an old blacksmith shop. He feels it is very important to contribute back to the neighborhood he loves. His love for coffee was obvious as he spoke passionately about their philosophy and business practices. Mile Square uses a direct flame, cast iron drum, custom made, gorgeous roaster — appropriately named«little Ray Charles» as a nod to where this place is located. Super cool. I must mention that the fennel and almond biscotti was a PERFECT pair to their Crossroads Blend coffee we sampled here today. They also have their beans for purchase on the shelves at local joints like Goose the Market, Whole Foods — and Café Audrey at Fort Ben serves their coffee too! Trace mentioned they will start doing small coffee classes for groups of 5 – 6 people. Keeping this place on my radar for sure. Thanks for an amazing stop, Trace!

This is a review for the Mile Square Coffee truck — I haven’t made it over to their actual location. The truck has been making the rounds recently… caught it on Halloween at City Market(although no one even commented when I showed up in my Wayne Campbell costume…) and have been told that they’ll be on the circle every Tuesday. Their selection is limited(no espresso machine) but their product is fantastic! I’ve got to watch myself with the cold brew, I love it but the caffeine content is high! The flavor is fantastic, staff has been really nice. Hoping to see Mile Square around more often!

From the minute I stepped inside the simple yet intricate roastery space for Mile Square Coffee Roastery on the south side of downtown it was love at first sight. Lets be clear that I’m not a coffee drinker — well, to be more precise, I wasn’t a coffee«pure”/I’ll drink that plain coffee drinker before I was introduced to the rich and flavorful coffee produced by Trace and Mile Square. Bags will run you between $ 13 and $ 15. Make sure you take the time to meet Trace, the owner, his passion for the product and going the extra mile will leave you hanging on his every word. You can find their coffee beans for purchase at Goose the Market, Lulu’s Coffee + Bakehouse, Homespun, farmers markets and several locally-based businesses around town. Soupremacy located off Monument Circle also recently brought on their beans for their brews — you can also find their coffee by the cup at Lulu’s, Best Chocolate in Town and Cultured Swirl.

I drink coffee. Lots of coffee. I thought I knew what good coffee was, but I soon realized I’d never had FRESH coffee. I had never had PERFECTLY roasted coffee. I’m hooked and I can never go back to buying coffee at the grocery again.

A great coffee roaster. Stop in and get fresh roasted coffee and talk to the man who roasted it himself in shop. I wish they would open their own coffee bar!

My husband and I try to buy gifts from local businesses in Indy whenever possible. His parents are both coffee junkies — I mean, they are nearly 30 years older than me and can suck down more caffeine in a day than I do in a week — and I heard about Mile Square. I placed an order and totally spaced that I had to pick it up on a Saturday. They called me and when I explained I was stuck at home, waiting on someone to check on our cable service, they offered to mail it to me at no additional charge. Wow. Then, the snow came, and we weren’t able to go south for Christmas — why let good coffee go to waste? AH-MAY-ZING. It was really, really good. We will definitely be purchasing more whenever we re-attempt«Christmas» with the in-laws, and I’ll make a reminder on my calendar this time to pick it up!
