I had the steak and onions and it was delicious. The staff was super nice. Just wish the interior was just little more like restaurant, but that is ok as long as the food is great!

Wish the restaurant was bigger. They did not have everything I wanted. Food was good.

Looking to get a taste of Home cooking… I was excited to find this place on Unilocal. It’s a small store front with a few table and chairs. Comfortable for two, not for a large family. I decided to take it to go. The gentlemen I spoke with was friendly and welcoming. The food was made to order, which took time, however, welcome to get fresh food. The price caught me of guard. Very expensive! While the food was okay/good, the portion size was very small leaving me disappointed. With little Puerto Rican food selections in Houston. I visited two more times with the same results and decided it will be my last time. I better balance in price and portion would have made me a regular.

Barely made it today during rush hour. This is a very small hole in the wall iterally bout 10ft by like 15 feet wide, tiny but cozy joint. I had the Mofongo, bistec with rice and beans plus tostones and 2 pastelillos. All this was to go since they were closing. Food was very good, this place has been open 35 years according to the owner, but currently under current owner only 8 years. Owner is very friendly, the place is very humble and only has like 5 tables total. The menu isn’t extensive but serves the main popular Puerto Rican dishes. I’d definitely come again on my next visit to Houston. I only hope next time the menu expands to having items like Yuca al mojo and alcapurrias. Other than that very cool boricua spot to satisfy the summer hunger!

The meal was decent, the Mofongo and Carne Frita was very filling. The pork was very salty and fried so it was really greasy but the Mofongo balanced it very well. The plate is not very big but don’t let that for you it will fill you up. For $ 14.35, that is with a water, I felt it was a little overpriced for a tiny restaurant with no A/C.

Very good authentic Puerto Rican food. We came all the way from Chicago and we happened to be in the neighborhood when we came across this hidden gem. The owner who also happens to work the kitchen is very nice also.

If your looking for some good ol home cooking Puerto Rican food in the fourth ward, tex chick Puerto Rican restaurant is the place to go. The place is very small I’d say about the size of a 2 car garage, there’s about 6 – 7 tables and the kitchen is right next to you and you can clearly see your food being cooked to order. Please don’t come here if your expecting fine dining this is a spot where you can sit down chill chat with the cook/owner while he cooks you up a awesome Puerto Rican dish. The food here taste just like I would have at wellas casa on a Sunday. Since I started coming here to tex chick I have tried several dishes and I’m pleased everytime. I’ve tried carne fritas, mofongo, pollo guisado, bacalao, carne guisado, breaded chicken, yellow rice and beans, plantains both ways either Maduro or tostones, I’ve also tried the pastelitos de carne e pollo that’s not even on the menu :-)… The carne fritas is one of my top choices when ever I come in and it’s a very popular dish, the mofongo I’ve had here some of the best I’ve had in a long time, mofongo is smashed fried green plantain made in a pilon known has a wooden mortar with some garlic, some olive oil, and broth although it’s Origin is from Puerto Rico mofongo is also big in Cuban and Dominican cuisine. The carne and pollo guisado is the same Just made with a different class of meat and I don’t know what they put in the sauce but it’s amazing. The bacalao known as salted cod fish is very good but be aware that the bacalao they use has small bones so please be aware of that. The yellow rice and beans are delicious as well as the plantains in either way of Maduro or tostones I prefer tostones with my meal. Now the pastelitos are made to order and both chicken and beef are good. tex chick Puerto Rican restaurant is a good place if you want to eat some good home style Puerto Rican food. The only bad thing I’d say about this place is a bit small and there’s hardly any parking around fairview so be prepared to drive around. Note: look them up on Facebook, sometimes they have events going on.

The only restaurant in Houston that serves mofongo(that I have found so far). Quaint little restaurant with excellent service.

Ok to good Puerto Rican food but the portions were extremely small for the price — felt like an appetizer. Perhaps it was a bad night because the reviews are really good.

We were a little skeptical because of the condition of the inside. It is very tiny and not the cleanest. We had 1 order of carne frita and tostones and 2 soda, it was $ 22! The tostones were over ripe, pre made and refried. The carne frita tasted decent. I would not recommend this place. To add it is ridiculously over priced.

So I live in the neighborhood, and I want this place to be good. But every time I eat here I’m disappointed. So it’s time to review… Today it took 30 minutes to get our food, and the place is tiny. I had 1 pork chop and mofongo for $ 11.95, and what a disappointment. Thin overcooked deep fried meat and dry plantain mush. Not again.

Don’t let looks fool you. Well sort of. Once inside, it’s about 7 tables and the bare minimum of what you need to eat. You can see the owners/family cooking in the kitchen right infront. The rice and beans are alright — the chicken is super flavorful — and my guy had the bisteak — he loved it. It’s down home cookin. Not a lot of parking infront — try for the side streets but be careful where you park — watch for signs.

Best Puerto Rican food this side of Puerto Rico. Fantastic service and prices were fair. Cooked right in front of you just like home with mommy and poppy!

Great food and great people. The chef Angelo and his mother treated us like family. I did not find empanadas in the menu but i overheard somebody ordered them and they were absolutely delicious and authentic. Totally recommended. We will definitely be back for more.

What a little hidden GEM off of Fairview! Been wanting to try this place for a while now. Last Sunday we just walked in and to my surprise it was a very cozy place, more like walking into a kitchen but we received a warm welcome by the family who owns/runs it which made us feel at home. The menus were on our table, and when we were ordering the host/chef/waiter walked us to the kitchen and showed us what he was cooking. We were not that familiar with Puerto Rican food, so by showing us it saved him trying to find the words to explain. Which worked for us! They were conveniently playing merengue music, which we enjoyed, all that is missing is a beer & view of the ocean. We ordered steak & onions & fried pork. Fried pork was a bit dry, so he made some more, free of charge. The steak was very good, and the plancha’s were delicious. The rice & beans had a nice flavor as well. For your kitchen away for your kitchen, humble friendly folks, and delicious reasonably priced food, I’ll definitely be back! Gracias!

This, people, is perfection. It is this tucked away little blue house that can be overlooked at first. But as soon as you step in and are greeted by the cooks its like stepping into a different place. I first went here with an old friend, and was blown away. I tried mofongo for the first time and it was literally like joy. Straight joy in my mouth. Now, the staple that I always get is the Bistec Empanado and the rice with black beans. The steak is breaded so perfectly and fried to a tender perfection while the rice comes with black beans and what I believe to be is pork. This rice is so amazingly flavored that I can literally eat just that and be completely satisfied. I think a year ago the place caught on fire and I was very worried that it would be a gem gone too soon. Thank you, Tex-Chick, for providing a quick escape from the mundane food of Houston.

My bedroom is bigger than this place. Great food. Only about 6 small tables and a small kitchen in the corner. I ordered the stewed codfish(bacalao guisado). I was expecting a bowl of soup, but the food came on a plate with rice and beans. The beans were good, but the rice had no taste… hot sauce on top fixed that. I had a Malta India drink with the meal. Never having a Malta soda before, I liked the taste. The owner is very friendly and helpful… so are the patrons who were eating there. I enjoyed my food and would like to return and try another delicious entrée. Prices were reasonable…$ 12 for a lunch plate.
