It was wonderful! Atmosphere is everything and a knowledgeable waiter who can give you History and a great beer, can’t be beat!

Easy 5 star! Awesome service, great food and amazing beverages! I had the duck and it didn’t disappoint! My wife had the meatloaf and it was really good, not a typical ML but a really one! My youngest had pasta and it was very well presented. We had a couple of Moscow Mules, they make their won ginger beer… Super yummy! We were in town for one night but if we were here for two, we’d probably have to come back:)

The most authentic Belgian food in the South. The Trappe Door is cool, but unpretentious; romantic but not stuffy. The menu is well executed, and the extensive beer list is well-paired. A must visit. My 5-Point Rating System [open category — compared to all restaurants] Food: 5 of 5 Service: 5++ of 5 Efficiency: 5 of 5 Atmosphere: 5++ of 5 Overall Value: 5 of 5 The Trappe Door is a bar first. Our kids were fine here, but A) we went at lunch, and B) our kids have been trained to blend in at nice restaurants. Your kids should be adventurous eaters and accustomed to flying below the radar at meals to enjoy this. The beer list represents all the major Belgian styles, and the labels in each category offer familiar and hard-to-find bottles and drafts for every level of appreciation. Maison DuPont(my favorite Saison) and Duchesse De Bourgogne(a sour Red Ale aged in oak casks and rated 91-points by Beer Advocate) were perfect complements to this cool basement retreat on a hot South Carolina afternoon. If the bar is well-curated, the kitchen is simply inspired — the food here is FANTASTIC. We had two styles of mussels(Provencale and Vietnamese), Flemish Onion Soup, Duck Spring Rolls, Lamburger sliders(melted goat cheese and a beet relish!!), and a few other items. Any one of those dishes would merit their own review. The two highlights of the meal are both features unique to this restaurant. The first was our server, Lucky, a Greenville local who represents the intelligent momentum and artistic savvy that are fast becoming this city’s well-deserved reputation. Lucky is knowledgable about both the food and the beer selection, and he took time with us to help us decide. Lucky even brought samples of different beers to help us pick — and his original recommendation was spot-on. We experienced a truly uncommon level of service that went a long way to making this a five-star meal. The other element is a little strange to mention in a review, but here it is: the restroom is decorated entirely with Tin Tin comics. Hergé, the Belgian whose classic comics spin tales of adventure, global travel, and contemporary political commentary, would have loved a urinal like this one. I’ve never mentioned urinal art before, but then, I’ve never before seen urinal art worth mentioning.

I accidentally fell in this place(trap door, get it) and it turned out to be a very good time. The food was good, they had a great selection of beer, and the server was very nice. Try the mussels, they were great.

My favorite place in Greenville, this place has amazing dishes and an awesome beer selection. The first time I tried a sour ale was here, and I fell in love with them immediately. And the Brussels sprouts were pure ecstasy.

We had the duck, ribeye & grilled chicken salad with French onion soup. Every dish was excellent & served piping hot. Our server had great recommendations of food & wine pairings. We loved the atmosphere — dark & comfortable. Would highly recommend this little gem & can’t wait to go back on our next trip.

Wow, all the food we ordered was out standing. First my wife ordered the steak, it was out of this world tender. She opted for the butter topping on the steak and you could practically cut the steak with a fork it was so tender. She had fries with her dish, which she said were great, however I didn’t try those. I had the short ribs that practically fell apart when you went to cut the meat. With a nice glaze over the meat this dish was paired very well together. The mashed potatoes I believe contained leeks which was different but, surprisingly very good. I wasn’t a huge fan of the brussel sprouts that had been thinly sliced and tossed in I believe cheese. I would prefer my brussel sprouts roasted, but that is just my personal preference. Our company had the Bangers and Mash which you can tell a lot of care goes into crafting these sausages. They say that they make the sausage on site and I believe them. They were very rich and flavorful. I have to admit though. I had food envy over the steak. If/when I go back I will definitely opt for the steak.

Dined with something of a group last Friday night, 5÷27÷16. FYI, tables /reservations are assigned by a computer system. We were a large group(5 couples) and had two separate reservations(6 and 4) and we were not given tables near each other due to the tables being preassigned. Had we known, we would have booked a reservation for 10. But since, the number of people coming changed during the planning, we just made a second reservation… Just an FYI for those making reservations. They have a huge assortment of beer. Beer lovers will probably rejoice. Since my wife and I are not beer drinkers this was somewhat lost on us, but we were impressed by the selection and the beer taps being coming from the ceiling. Their wine selection(by the glass) is dependent on what they currently have open. While they had approximately 10 bottles open, the entire process left my wife a bit underwhelmed. It’s apparent that beer is the primary beverage and we understand that this wine selection system makes great business sense, it is quite different, so just take that into consideration. While adequate, the liquor selection was limited as well. To that end, we both enjoyed a our liquor drinks. The above are not complaints, they are merely information for someone who has never been to this restaurant. If you are not a fan of beer, you should still visit the Trappe Door, the food is great! I had the steak frittes. The steak was seasoned well and cooked perfectly. The frittes(french fries) were awesome and the 3 dipping sauces(sweet chili & grainy mustard we my favorites) where phenomenal. My wife had the cheeseburger and was very impressed. The other couple at our table had the fish and chips and cherry sausages(bangers and mash in most other places) and they had great things to say about their entrees as well. Our waiter forgot to ring in our appetizers(they weren’t on our bill) but the food came out so quickly that we barely even noticed. Also, the atmosphere is different but quite cool. You are actually in the basement… When you are in downtown Greenville, stop in the Trappe Door. I’m sure that you will be impressed.

The waitstaff is very professional and attentive. The beer selection was fantastic. The meals were prepared perfectly. My table ended up doing family style sharing because they were all too good. We had the Brussels sprouts, short ribs, pasta with(oysters maybe?), scallops, duck breast(OMG) and the pork loin(OMGOMG). This place was amazing and can do now wrong. It gets busy, even on a Wednesday night, so call ahead and they seat immediately.

Yum. Came for lunch when I was in Greenville for a conference. Saw this place on Unilocal and decided to try. It was a good place to try. We didn’t come for drinks, only food and the food was yummy. I had the pork and cherry hoagie with a side salad. It was lovely, I especially liked the side salad, but also surprisingly the creamed Brussel sprouts on the hoagie was fabulous. Never thought of creaming Brussel sprouts but will definitely try this one at home. I had to try the fries too since it is what they advertise, Belgian fries. They were good, cooked well. Some crispy some soft, just the way I like. However they were slightly over salted. Nothing the garlic mayo couldn’t help relieve. That was my favorite of the trio. Prices are reasonable and the wait staff was very friendly. My friend had the chicken and mushroom crêpe, which was recommended by the waiter and she enjoyed that as well. Nice little place, kind of dark but a good find.

The Trappe Door is by far my favorite restaurant in all of Greenville! Everything about this place is GREAT — the atmosphere & ambiance, the food, and of course the beer! This place is always packed — especially on weekends so make sure you get reservations in advanced. Hidden between Wild Wings and Barley’s on Washington St., you get hit with experience the moment you step through the doors. Immediately you take a set of stairs downstairs where you’re greeted by the hosts and as soon as you look around you realize that you’re about have an experience, not just a meal. You really feel like you’ve snuck into a Belgian pub full of old barrels of beer, custom tables and booths, low ceilings, and ton of architectural design! As for food, you can’t go wrong with the filet with au poivre sauce. I’ve had it medium-medium rare on multiple occasions and it’s easily my favorite option on the menu. They’re well-known for their mussels, and I must say they do an incredible job making them exceptional. I’m not a fan of mussels typically, but their«White and Bleu» mussels are really, really good! Another great dinner option are the Braised Short Ribs — they’re tender and flavorful. They also have a ton of homemade mayonnaises and you HAVETOTRY the truffle version with the fries! Their long list of beers is incredible, and they are constantly updating their selection of Belgian imports. The staff are extremely knowledgable and very helpful in providing recommendations that pair with your meal well. They’ve never led me astray so I always lean into their expertise. Again, this restaurant is INCREDIBLE and you will not be disappointed!

This place was such a fun and random surprise! So, my boyfriend surprised me with a weekend in Greenville for an early birthday celebration. He wouldn’t tell me where we were going for dinner so as we walked up the street I would make random guesses. I got so excited when I saw the sign for Trappe Door and yelled«it’s Trapp-eee Door isn’t it!!!» I was so excited, I couldn’t even read properly y’all! The vibe was great. It was comfortable and cool. We were given an extensive drink list. I went with a light wheat beer that they had on tap and my boyfriend went with a Pinot Noir. From our seat, I was trying to look at what other people ordered. I’m that type of person that looks at what was ordered around me and asks people what it is, if they like it, blah blah blah. The guy next to us said he loved his seafood linguine so I went with that. My boyfriend went with the recommendation that we kept hearing — the short ribs. We started with a side of fries that came with three flavored mayos of our choice. We tried the bourbon bbq, garlic and chipotle and we both agreed that the chipotle was the best. The fries were awesome! Our meals came and we dug in. My boyfriend loved his and scraped it clean. He even liked the chopped Brussel sprouts, which says a lot because he isn’t always one to finish his fresh vegetables. He loved the short rib and I thought it was very flavorful, as well. I liked my seafood linguine. It isn’t something I would normally order but it was fun to try. There was a lot of seafood and I couldn’t even finish it. My only complaint is that I wish it had a little more of a bold flavor. As I walked out and looked at other peoples plates(I told y’all, I want to look around!) I decided that when we come back to this place(because we will), I will try the steak frites.

Excellent service, bustling in the evening I visited, great food with surprising variety, and lots of space for large parties! I visited The Trappe Door with cool coworkers twice. The first time, I only stayed for a short time and actually didn’t taste anything, but I appreciated how accomodating the staff was for our large party. I also enjoyed the happening atmosphere. Dark like a secret basement with a large bar and many wooden tables. Rustic, cozy, pub-like. The restaurant door leads to steps that go down where the large restaurant room is. The second time I visited, I had reservations for a party of 7. I think all of us got mussels, which is what we came for. This is where I saw great variety: they had around 7 different sauce options for mussels. The mussels(a whole pound) are brought out with a heap of fries(think Five Guys style) and three proprietary mayonnaises. You get to pick three flavors out of the dozen or so offerings. There isn’t any ketchup, by the way, don’t ask. I. Ate. Every. Bite. All my fries, all my mussels. I got the white wine broth for my mussels, which was fine, but I like a saltier broth for my mussels, so I’ll get a different kind next time I visit. In my party of 7, I didn’t hear one complaint. We all had a great time. We were sat around 5:15pm, and there weren’t many other patrons in the restaurant at the time. We got our food in a good amount of time. I only tried the mussels and fries, no booze, but I would highly recommend!

Oh my gosh! This place was ah-mazing! I wanted to go somewhere different to celebrate Mother’s Day and it was phenomenal. First off, the place looks awesome and exactly to the Belgian-Style taste that they were going for. We ordered the very delicious La Ardilla wine. We all enjoyed this moscato and it was gone quick! The food did take awhile to make, but it was worth it and warm and not cold like one would expect when they wait for their food. My brother-in-law had the duck, my father had the salmon, my sister had the beef stew, my mother had a seafood pasta dish, and I had a very delicious chicken dish. We were all very satisfied with our dinner plates and dessert as well! Overall this is the place to go if you want to have a lovely dinner out with close friends and/or family. I will definitely be back!

I would happily give them 5 stars except that their table/reservations management on Thu-Sat evenings is so poor. The hosts are not rude, persay; they just come across as unwelcoming, stressed, eager to end the conversation about reservations and kind of relieved to see you go. So I stopped trying. Otherwise, they are fantastic. The concept is Belgian«Euro-pub». Their servers are great and know their stuff. They have a phenomenal beer list and a delectable menu. They would be one of my top 3 recommendations for the city, except that it’s just frustrating to get a table.

THEGO-TO: This is my go-to and it should be your go-to, too. The Trappe Door is situated off Main Street, marked by an unassuming doorway leading to a low slung pub with great décor. The ambiance is foreign and gives a sense of intrigue – perfect for a Belgian-style pub! The Belgian food served here is approachable: the dishes are made perfectly using quality ingredients. I think you can’t go wrong with anything on their menu. Look for their mussels – served in a number of creative and decadent broths – truffle fries with tons of dipping sauces, and savory pasta dishes. Where The Traape Door experience gets exotic is with its libations. Belgium produces more beer for its size than any other country in the world – Blondes, Tripels, Dubbles abound on their menu. I take my beer loving friends here and they are always impressed by the beer menu. Be adventurous with any of their 10+ rotating draft-list. I also recommend anything with absinthe in it like their Sazerac, or their made-from-scratch whisky sour. Eating here has the satisfaction that no one else is getting a similar experience at any other restaurant in Greenville, SC. With a dependability of experience at a fair price, eating here will bring you bliss every time.

So I came here with my super trendy life inspiring ex neighbor and college friend who was trying to show me how cool Greenville, South Carolina is and it totally is, which this being a great sample of the new cultural trendiness in town. Okay first off — expectations management. This place in the basement of the building so be prepared for a dark Belgian castle type feel(as a fellow Southerner, I know most of the time we like the airy spring feel)… Oh and prepare for chill broish type atmosphere(with none of the jerkness). The beer: The great selling point of this place has to be its super authentic(and delicious) Belgian(of course) but continental European varieties are abound. The servers were super on point with with actually knowing the nitty gritty of all their beers. The food: Okay this is ironically the most un-Belgian part of this experience, the serving sizes are standard American — didn’t bother me. I had a seafood stew of sorts — it was super delightful with amazingly delicious sauces. My friend had the fish and chips… but it wasn’t any fish and chips… you had 3 pocket tray for dip(among the numerous dip options). The décor: This really felt like a Belgian beer hall of sorts with the dark lighting and wood colors. The only thingy that made it look off was the awkwardly place air conditioning vents that made the place have blotches of awkward plastic placement. So basically, this is the fun trendy place to take your out of town guest to show how cool Greenville, SC is… just be prepared for the cave like feel…

Unique place! Great music. Great atmosphere if you like dim lighting, exposed brick and wooden beams(I do). The Trappe Door has a European, Belgian feel and the vibe of being in a Trappist cellar… An all around fun place to be. Huge selection of draft & bottled Belgian beers with description of each variety & alcohol content of each brew. Definitely a place to have a few drinks. Our food was very good — we had the Buffalo fried oysters, Orval burger and meatloaf sandwich. My burger was cooked perfectly… And seasoned perfectly… I just wish the service was on point. No one checked on us once the food was dropped off. I would have asked for another drink and ordered another side… And even dessert. The menu offered profiteroles, waffle balls & other tasty desserts!

This is the place in Greenville that I take my friends from out of town to show off our city. Beneath Barleys in the heart of downtown Greenville, The Trappe Door lies in wait. It is waiting to serve you the best damn Belgian cuisine and imported beer available. The owner even went so far as to fly his chefs to Belgium in order to learn about the food, beverage, and culture from the source. The place looks like a tavern that you would expect to visit in a Dungeons and Dragons campaign. Low wooden ceilings, rustic lighting, a draft system that pours from the ceiling, and some more intimate booths just make the place a fantasy come to life. The food and drink is absolutely incredible. 10+ rotating taps(can’t recall how many), an amazing list of bottled beer(primarily all Belgian for both), and a solid wine selection will have you oogling at the drink menu for awhile. Don’t know what you want? Fear not. The servers here know their shit. They can help you find just the beer you want, or do an excellent job of pairing a beer with your food. No food I’ve ordered here has been less than stellar. The cherry pork sausages are rich, hearty, delicious, and my favorite. Baked Brie as an appetizer changed the way I look at cheese. I’m not big on seafood, but these guys are famous for their mussels. Whatever you do, get the frites(crispy fries) with the mayonnaise based dipping sauces — it comes with 3 sauces, and they will make your taste buds weep with joy. Prices are moderate — expensive, but not anything outrageous, and you will definitely be getting your money’s worth in terms of food quality and portion size. My only regret is that I didn’t write this review sooner.

My boyfriend and I just moved to Greenville and wanted to have a New Year’s Eve dinner somewhere and decided to come here because of the good reviews. We ordered the fried oysters as our appetizer and it was interesting. The batter with sauce drizzled over was tasty although made it hard to actually taste the oyster. I ordered the mushroom penne pasta and it was sooo good! I’m craving it right now thinking about it. We also ordered a bottle a Pinot noir with our meal and it was good. They have a big wine selection to choose from. Our server was great. I think his name was Devin? He was really helpful and even gave us some bar recommendations to go to after our dinner. I really enjoyed my time here and will definitely return.
