Meh. I truly don’t wanna be dissing what I think is a vital component to the ever-woeful South Street area, but I can’t escape the fact that I simply want so much more out of the South & Passyunk FM. Yes there are some really good stands here, and the location(the northernmost orphan-like block of Passyunk) is excellent. And as the great Unilocaler Dan F. accurately points out the atmosphere is far less frenetic than other city FMs. But… it’s just *TOO* small and limited for me. Usually there are no more than 5 vendors running, and simply managing to attract another 5 or so more would do it wonders, I think, both in terms of available variety and atmosphere. Again, Dan F. is accurate when he says that going here helps one«shave down» one’s patronage of Whole Foods and the crazily-expensive Essene, but I just wish that it weren’t merely a «shave».

Outstanding produce; insanely delicious bread(try the tiny rye rolls when they have them); fresh n fancy flowers for cheap; thrilling farm-fresh eggs(you’ll never want store-bought again); beef, pork and poultry; plants and herbs; chocolates and juice-based jellies I should not be eating, but do anyway; and a handsome farmer who’s caught my eye. All in just three or four tables with minimal pedestrian traffic. It’s easy, low-key shopping, and right outside Philadelphia Bar and Restaurant Supply — and Cohen’s Hardware, an awesome place for your random tools, tape, handyman referrals, and restaurant suggestions from the Cohen Family themselves(they won’t steer you wrong). Just an incredibly pleasant, stress-free shopping experience with very fair prices, that will allow you to shave down your visits to Whole Foods and Essene while supporting the local economy and spoiling yourself like crazy. Tuesdays, 2:30 to 7 pm.
