I really, really wanted to like this place. Having lived in Bushwick before it was used as a shoot location for the HBO series«Girls,» I still get excited when a new place opens up. A few good experiences, a few not-so-good visits, Palates was a bit of a rollercoaster ride when it came to service and available menu options. One great tuna sandwich and you think you’ve discovered the Next Great American Restaurant. But then a subsequent visit makes you think it was maybe all the nitrous oxide you had inhaled ahead of your earlier visit.(Kidding, of course.) I guess it doesn’t matter because Palate’s is not closed. I can’t say I’m surprised, but it’s still a shame to see a local new venture go the way of the dodo.

I’m pretty sure this place is closed. I’ve tried to go twice and the gate was closed. Today i called and there was no answer. It’s too bad.

Little gem in a vortex of traffic but right in the perfect location. This place was great to visit, they served food and drinks, my «cappo» was fantastic! I really liked the patio, go visit it! Cool area the trains passes by once in a while and the view looks lile a great movie shot. The onwer was there that time and he was really good company, someone who makes you feel like you are home. You can also grab a coffee and work on your computer if thats what you need to do. I liked it!

I recognize the owner here from Bushwick Kitchen, really nice guy. I really like his food. Assuming the girl you let run the counter is family, correct? Well it’s attitudes like hers that run businesses straight into the ground. She doesn’t want to be there and it is clear. This place should have more business. Also it is weird that you don’t take cards… but you are on seamless… and you have an ATM in your restaurant that has a 1.75 surcharge.

A warm and inviting café/community spot/lunch place, Palates fits the bill for anything you’re craving– from delicious homemade kale salads to hearty schnitzel sandwiches. Lazlo, the owner, is a Hungarian powerhouse who used to own Bushwick Kitchen. He makes it clear that his mission is the bring the community together in his awesome space, which offers delicious fare for cheap. The space is huge, and everything is lovingly handmade. The backyard is a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee or, as fall arrives, hot chocolate. Palates is truly the jack of all trades nestled in Bushwick– it offers wifi for the casual café worker, monthly open mics for the musicians, art shows for the artists, and awesome grab-and-go pastries for those on the way to work. Support local! Woo!

I would love to give you guys more stars, but you’re going to lose points when you’re not open 3 hours into your supposed operating hours. I’ve been there only twice before(in the evening) so I never had this problem, but getting there in the morning looking forward to breakfast and coffee and having to find a different spot because you ain’t open when you say you’re going to be, that’s a pain in the ass. This review isn’t meant to harm your business — in fact, I hope it helps you improve your communication with customers. Cheers.

Had the chicken schnitzel sandwich which was delicious. And the beet salad which was very yummy. Lazaro, the owner, is really nice and accommodating.

This is a cute small spot with rustic décor. I originally came here after reading about their Wafflato on Bushwick Daily. Waffle + Gelato = WAFFLATO = Delicious. I’ve been back to have the veggie omlette and last time the bagel with lox, everything i’ve tried here has been great! The prices are fair and they are cash only(which is pretty normal for the neighborhood).

My favorite local coffee shop. Great staff, and really good food.

I wanted to like this spot. I really tried. 3 times in fact. Finally, the chance to have a great little brunch spot in Bushwick, but alas… 3 visits. All progressively worse service, value and speed each time. The staff is easily overwhelmed by anymore than two customers. Simple coffee orders find their way to your table after 20 minutes. Food orders come out 1 plate at a time(with 10min between each successive plate). I would expect this level of service while couch surfing with friends but not from a «restaurant». Also, ordered brunch, which clearly states on the menu that all options come with greens toast and roasted potatoes. It came with none and owner claims that they in fact do not come with those things. I really hope this place gets it’s act together, but honestly, they have so so far to climb before they’re even halfway decent. So, unless you have hours and hours to kill, enjoy receiving misleading/incorrect orders at a snails pace, leave it to the«professionals» and go to dunkin donuts.

I was there in the evening. There was only one other customer seated. I asked for a latte and the barista served me a shot of espresso in cold milk. I took a sip considering that I may be exploring new territory and I handed it back saying, «This is not a latte. Can I just have a coffee instead?» He said he had gotten mixed up and he would make me a latte. In hindsight, I should have just asked for a cup of ice and cut my losses, but I wanted something hot, so I asked him if he knew how to steam milk and he said he did. «OK,» I sat back down and I listened to him attempt a variety of ways to steam milk each unsuccessfully. After five minutes I stood up and told him, «Don’t worry about it. I’ll come back again another time.» Clearly, they are experiencing some growing pains. I don’t mind not being able to get a latte, but that was some of the worst customer service I have ever received. The place has potential though, which is why it gets 2 stars.

New favorite Bushwick café! Has a similar menu to a lot of other places in the neighborhood — sandwiches, soups, salads(and obviously coffee and every variation of it) — but with WAY better prices! Great brunch special too. Fast delivery, but it’s worth eating there; good location, really nice atmosphere. Also, the people working there are super friendly. If you live in Bushwick and haven’t been here yet, go!

I’m really glad to have this place on the block. I finally stopped in for brunch, and I was really happy that I did. It’s easy to spend upwards of ten dollars if you order brunch, but it’s quite a bit of food. I had the Eggs Florentine. Incredibly delicious. The eggs were cooked the way people who get really excited about the way eggs are cooked get really excited about. The potatoes were so well prepared that when one fell off of my plate, I was so sad that I waited until no one was looking and then ate it anyway. Would definitely recommend. The baristas are pleasant, but the café is definitely experiencing growing pains and seems to struggle occasionally with keeping things in stock. This is not a problem for me since I am not the kind of person whose world is shattered by the absence of half-and-half, but if you are that kind of person, you may want to take that into account. You may also want to maybe stay in for a night to chill out with your dog and watch Cosmos or something, because seriously, it is a dairy product.

Palates opened up a few months ago just down the street from my apartment and I’m so glad it did. The owner is so nice and friendly and genuinely excited about the neighborhood and food. They offer the usual coffee shop fare(bagels, muffins etc), brunch, sandwiches, salads, soups and gelato. I know the owner has also been talking about adding some dinner items as well(pastas, cuts of meat etc) which would be awesome. He really makes an effort to make good food super affordable. I’ve never ordered delivery because we’re so close, but whether we take it to go or eat in the shop it’s always delicious, hot and a good price. I love their lattes. All the staff is super nice and wants to bring you into their excitement about the place(hey– we just got gelato try some now! Or hey– we just got a juicer, please let me give you some fresh squeezes oj!) There are a lot of plans for this little place so I highly suggest you check it out and see what is new!

PALATES opened up just around the corner as I was moving into the area. It is a great spot to grab some coffee and a sandwich on your way or just hang out and catch up on emails using their complementary wifi. My favorite is the turkey provolone on toasted multigrain but they also have soups, salads, and brunch. YES, I did just say BRUNCH. The food is always fresh and tasty and the prices are absolutely reasonable. I would rather grab a coffee here on my way to work than pay for that overpriced latte at Starbucks any day. Support yo local businesses!

was really excited for a place like this in the neighborhood and it seems to have potential… but we were entirely underwhelmed and disappointed. ordered two sandwiches through seamless– both were prepared entirely incorrectly and half-assed. ingredients were a combination of: meager, mixed up between the two sandwiches or omitted entirely… not cool especially when some items are an additional charge to add. also ordered a soup that seemed pretty clumsily thrown together with huge half-peeled veggies and little to no seasoning– not even salt… but plenty of gnarly gristly chunks of chicken scraps if you’re into that sort of thing. the veggie chili was a similarly unseasoned, watery mess. the only reason i didn’t give this place a 1* is because the area is desperate for casual dining options like this and i really want them to get their shit together and improve and become successful.

Great quality ingredients, awesome prices, really glad this place just opened up down the street from me. Sometimes I just want eat out without having to choose between going cheap and eating crap or feeling guilty because I could have saved a lot of money by just making something at home. Palates isn’t re-inventing the wheel: they have soups, salads, and sandwiches. There are no bacon-infused cronut kale salads with chia seeds. Even if the food isn’t mind-blowing, I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve ever ordered. It’s basic, but they use quality ingredients, it’s forgiving to your wallet. and the place has a great feel to it. Also: great coffee free wifi great gilato excellent music playing, every time It’s clearly a work in progress, and it seems to get a little bit better every time I come in. The owner is super nice, excited to be part of the neighborhood, and ambitious about this place’s potential. The reviewer who complained about the lack of professionalism probably wasn’t making anything up, this place doesn’t have the tight-ship vibe about it, but for me that’s where its charm is. It’s just getting started, so they’re not super busy or over-staffed. I think this place will be a hot spot as soon as it starts to warm up.

So I’m working on New Years day and was in the mood for a salad. I was initially worried since there were no grubhub ratings for this place but I haven’t had much success getting a decent salad in bushwick so far. I risked it and ordered what was basically a chicken ceasar salad and a turkey sandwich for later. If you’re in the mood for a salad or sandwich and dont want to walk around in sub 32 degree weather this is the place i’d reccomend. Probably the best salad I’ve had in Bushwick. No joke, the ingredients were all crisp and fresh upon delivery(including the chicken and avocado) The delivery guy was friendly and the prices are very reasonable too, good start to the new year finding this place on GH. Hope to see this place do well.

I hate to give a new place in my neighborhood a sub-par review, but this place was just asking for it. I went in last weekend to check the place out and just get a coffee with my friend. When we walked in, there was no one behind the counter, and just one customer sitting in a booth. The guy in the booth eventually said ‘hey, whats up?’ and stood up to go behind the counter. As it turns out, this guy was the barista(unprofessional much?). I ordered a medium mocha latte, and my friend ordered a coffee with cream. The barista first turned around to scope out the various syrups that were available and then told me ‘Um…i don’t think we have mocha, um… we have this almond mocha syrup?’. I switched to a regular latte. He made my latte and gave my friend his coffee, then told told my friend they were out of cream or half-and-half. How is this place brand new, not busy at all and have no half-and-half? I hope this place can get its act together, but it doesn’t look promising. I’d be scared to try any of the food since they can’t even make basic coffee/espresso drinks.
