My husband and I drove through a night from Chicago to NC and were exhausted, and this was the first motel we came across in Asheville. We asked the manager if we could just stay there for the day, not even a night. He said the rate was $ 85 which I found to be high, but we accepted. We got into the room(the door was wide open by the way, not sure why) and the room STUNK. It smelled like ten people had been smoking cigars in there for a year straight, plus a thick musky moldy smell. I had to hold my nose. We were so tired I turned down the bedsheet to try and take a nap… I figured I’d just deal with it. The pillows were covered in hair. The sheets were FILTHY. Stains, hair, crusty stuff. All over the sheets and pillowcases. I can’t even imagine this place could still be in operation. I don’t believe for a second they washed their sheets more than once per week. It was just filthy. Anyway, when we went back to the office to ask for a refund, he insisted he show us another«non-smoking room», which we went to see. It was almost exactly the same scenario. It just didn’t smell AS bad as the first room. When we finally put our foot down and insisted we just wanted out money back, he said he would do it but he needed to charge us a $ 25 «fee» because we «messed up the bed.» I never do this, but I actually shouted at him that he was trying to scam us and no hotel should be this filthy. He also tried to charge me $ 2.50 tax on the make-believe fee. I argued with him until he just removed the tax. I can not believe I actually paid $ 25 to walk into the dirtiest, smelliest hotel room I’ve ever seen and just ask for my money back. Please people, do not go to this place. There are some OK reviews for this hotel, but they have to be fake. I can’t see how any human being who values their hygeine and health could even breathe the air in this place and not be revolted.

First of all, this place is definitely not for condescending snobs. And with this point understood and out of the way: Whispering Pines was just what we were looking for. My son and I were in the middle of a long but quick multi-day auto trip and needed a place to rest in Asheville. I am a travelling construction worker by trade and I like the old school, single story motor lodges because you don’t have to haul your luggage across giant parking lots, through lobbies, up and down stairs, in and out of elevators, and down seemingly endless hallways. Also, we had a new(to us) motorcycle on a trailer and were worried about someone messing with it, so we greatly appreciated having it just 20 feet from our bedroom window. I am also somewhat of a history nut and enjoy staying at older establishments as long as they are well kept. This particular one reminded me of a place in which I used to stay while vacationing with my grandparents in the 1960’s. I usually find Continental breakfasts at motels to be gimmicky, inadequate, and usually not worth the premium prices those places charge for accommodations, so I didn’t miss this at all. I didn’t miss all the screaming brats at breakfast and the mad rush for the last bear claw either. The manager(owner?) was not overly talkative but he certainly wasn’t rude or unfriendly. This is a «Mom and Pop» place. You have to realize he probably lives in the back and must answer to the ring of a bell 24 hours a day, despite any personal activity in which he may be involved. He might need to get back to whatever he was doing, or he might have even been asleep. I am always conscious of these likelihoods when checking in at owner-operated places and I am prepared to give them due courtesy. This is simply a matter of common human decency to me. He came right away and processed us right through. We had our room key in a couple of minutes time and at a great price. We parked right in front of our door and were settled in our room in a minute or so. The room was not huge but it was plenty comfortable. We never turned it on, but there was a big flat screen TV — maybe 42″. The paint was fresh and so were the linens. There were no weird or unpleasant smells. We didn’t need these, but there was a fridge and microwave. The decorations were minimal and tasteful. We especially liked the bathroom. It was large for the age of the place and had a nice big shower that worked really well. Everything inside was much newer and fresher than the historic outside would lead a person to believe. Even my 14 year old son remarked how nice and adequate the room was, and«lame» is usually his favorite adjective. We were road weary and slept like babies. Thanks for a great experience, Whispering Pines! It is wonderful to see this rather historic motel still in operation and being maintained so well. If we ever visit Asheville again we wouldn’t stay anywhere else.

Whispering pines is just what we needed: a cheap place to sleep. The owner was not rude like other reviewers said. He was just straight to the point. We didnt have any problems with him. The bed was comfortable and I slept well. The noise level was also good and quiet. The heater/airconditioner was a little tricky to figure out but thats the case for all hotel/motels isnt it? The bathroom was a little strange with the double mirrors. and the tub was very shallow and caused the shower to leak. The water also takes a bit to heat up. We were staying for just one night in asheville and we had to keep it cheap. Plus our usual hostel was booked so this was a fine alternative.

It’s not close to anything, the owner/operators are almost comically unfriendly, the water pressure and temperature vary by the minute, the rooms are small, and the heating and cooling is provided by a wall unit that given its volume appears to be powered by a jet engine. That said, it’s cheap, it’s clean enough, the wifi is good, and they probably have a vacancy, so it’s a decent bet on a busy weekend. It’s a $ 15 cab ride from downtown.

A fine motel, has fridge, microwave, flat-screen TV, etc. We aren’t picky about hotels but I thought this one did the trick fine. A bit pricier than I would have liked for what you get, but Asheville does not have many cheap hotels. It is located next to a train track but only one passed by when we were there. All in all, about what you’d expect.

Disgusting. Do not waste your time or money with this place. The only revenue this place must get is by refusing to cancel reservations when people get there and see how horrid and nasty it is.
