I’m currently looking for a dining set so I thought I’d check out what MCM has to offer. The store/showroom is across from each other in the New West Quay and had some nostalgic mid century items. The owner was knowledgeable but a bit condescending. When she found out I was only looking TOBUY2 – 4 chairs, she told me she would NEVER split a set and waved her arms around in seeming random fashion to tell me she has individual dining chairs for sale somewhere in the store. There are some beautiful pieces here but I think their refurbished furniture and reproductions are overpriced. I don’t think I’ll come back to this store.

I decided I needed a tulip table for my home and lo and behold, MCM Home had one, alone with 4 matching swivels and a stool. The original price for the set was way out of my price range, but as luck would have it, a need to get it out of the shop to make space plus good timing meant it was mine for the taking! Jenny the owner was very accommodating of my request to pay on layaway(I hate credit cards — I want to know when I’ve paid for something that I’ve earned it!), and also arranged for delivery for much less than the cost I was quoted by other moving companies. She even delivered it personally late on a Friday night when it was the only time that worked for my schedule, and helped me carry my new table to my third floor walk up. Amazing! I’m really happy with the quality of the pieces I bought and the service I received. The only«fly» in the ointment was the staff member who was working when I went to pay my final bill, who took almost 20 minutes to process a debit transaction because she obviously was not familiar with the computer. The prices are high here — these are not thrift store finds. That being said, the collection is wonderfully curated, and with a new expanded housewares and décor section I am hopeful I might find other treasures in my price range. Otherwise, I guess I’ll just keep saving my pennies until I can afford something else fabulous from MCM Home.

I won’t be buying anything from this store in the future. I purchased an item from this store and while I was in love with the item in the showroom, after it was delivered I noticed poor refinishing on the back and bottom of the item(conveniently, these are the areas I was not able to inspect before purchasing it). Whoever«refinished» it did very shoddy and unprofessional work. The words«hack job» spring to mind. This is not cool for a store that prides itself on it’s «beautifully restored, refinished and reupholstered vintage items.» I also felt rushed and pressured by the owner who brushed off my concerns about the weight bearing capabilities of the item and seemed irritated when I wondered aloud how easily it would fit in our elevator. Lo and behold, the item is now bending under the weight of our 42″ TV(we were assured by the owner that«newer TVs weigh nothing» and«are not a problem»). As well, as I later discovered, the item is NOT teak as indicated on the receipt… it is MDF with veneer over top. I only realized this after the veneer started peeling off the base and a family member who has experience with woodworking noticed it. While I would hesitate to call this store a «racket,» it is not difficult to speculate that the owner has developed a business model that relies on naïve individuals who may be first time vintage furniture purchasers. Maybe they have picked up a copy of Atomic Ranch and liked the furniture but have never bit the bullet. I wish I had been more judicious with my purchase from Mid-Century Modern Home. The store is set up attractively and the prices are very high so it’s easy to forget that you are essentially looking at used furniture and should be cautious. Buyer beware…

While some of their furniture is decent, most seem to be 1970’s Canadian teak furniture. They flood craigslist daily with a list of their store stock and lack in customer service skills. I’ve found myself paying the extra bit to compensate for a higher overhead, by shopping at the stores on Main Street

As the name suggests, this new addition to New West’s antique alley specializes in mid-century modern furnishings from the 50s, 60s and 70s. My dreams rendered in teak and glass and upholstery, clean lines bringing a tear to these Scandinavian eyes that have seen too much IKEA. As at Urban Treasures next door, you’ll also find wonderful tableware, serving dishes, coffee sets(’cause that’s what the swingin’ adults drinking after dinner, the better to stay up all night and listen to jazz) and even a few vintage appliances. My favourite item was an expandable dining table, tiled down the center to provide a built-in potholder for hot serving dishes. Beautiful, practical designs — that’s why I’m such a sucker for this mid-century modern style. The store also keeps a mailing list, so if you want to be alerted when the store posts specific types of items that you’re looking for on Craigslist, be sure to sign up. The owners have excellent eyes for design if the current stock is anything to go by.
