Exploring the many wonders of Rottnest Island certainly works up a hunger. When you’re able to tear yourself away from exploring long enough to eat, check this place out. They do a great range of breads and baked goods. While I was there I tried a pie and a sausage roll. Both were great. The prices are a little higher than you’d pay for the same thing on the mainland, but not exorbitantly so. There is some indoor setting available but if the weather permits sit outside to watch the island’s human and quokka population go by.

Whilst writing my Unilocal reviews this week it has become clear to me that I visited a lot of bakeries over the Christmas holidays! I headed to Rotto for the day and obviously cannot make that journey across the water without visiting the Rottnest Bakery. It’s looking so much more modern than its previous incarnations that I remember as a kid. I opted for the chicken roll. It was fantastic, with a little bit of greenery, lemon avo and nice moist chicken. I thought $ 12.50 was a bit extortionate for a roll, even for Rottnest prices. Seeing as it was Christmas I had one of their mini fruit mince pies for afternoon tea on the way home, and it was one of the best I have ever had! Their range isn’t big, but the products are of a good quality. Prices are expensive.

Sure you are paying a premium for the only bakery on the island. But the food is fresh and tasty and I think I pretty much lived off their meat pies and sweets during days on the island. Loved that you could eat outside, granted it was a bit cold during winter months, but totally worth it since your neighbors are the quokkas. While a tad expensive for a bakery, I found this to be the most affordable dining option on the island. Worth stopping in when you visit.

A day trip to Rottnest isn’t complete without picking up something takeaway for lunch and eating it by the beach. The bakery is perfect for doing just that. Between us we ordered pies(with real chunks of meat), chips, sandwiches and coffees, all of which were delicious and were a fairly reasonable price.

This place, like a lot of places on Rottnest, has special summer tourist season prices. Gotta make money somehow I guess. It’s a bit annoying when you’re paying $ 6.70 for an average ordinary meat pie. Summer also means huge crowds and long waits for food. Basically this is sort of like your average suburban or refectory bakery only much longer waits for more expensive food of the same quality. You do get biscotti with your coffee, though apparently a lot of places do this? Coffee is ok. Add an extra star if you get a quokka to visit your table.

While Rottnest is a fantastic getaway, the signature partner to their crystal clear water is their bakery. The trip to Rotto is worthless without indulging on a sausage roll or my all time favourite vanilla slice. I can’t even hear myself think, my stomach is rumbling so loud just at the thought of it. I know you won’t believe me until you’ve tried it, but I would actually go to Rottnest purely to relive the best moment my taste buds have ever experienced. Just imagine the crispest pastry ever, not too dry but not too soggy, then imagine it covered with the sweetest and smoothest icing possible, and then if it couldn’t get any tastier, it’s oozing with the freshest most delicious custard you have ever tried — now that you’ve imagined the best possible vanilla slice yet, you must try Rottnest Bakery’s, because they are better; they are so good you can even begin to believe!
