Swan Basement was a revelation. They are committed to the Perth music scene, hosting Drum Media’s Gignition event every Sunday showcasing 4 up and coming bands or individuals. It makes for a great Sunday evening when its cold and rainy outside and if its not, just come down a bit earlier and have some beer garden drinks. A nice cosy venue.

This is one of the most underrated venues in Perth. The live room downstairs has a great PA, an oldschool rock vibe(it really feels like a basement venue) and a rather pleasant courtyard you can hang out in if the music is not to your liking. Although there used to be a giant pillar that blocked the view of the stage, this has been removed in renovation works several years ago. Although the programming these days is a little too heavy on alt-rock for my tastes, if I see a band is coming through there, I’ll generally head down to check it out because it’s a great room. The public bar upstairs is an equally pleasant proposition and now plays host to acoustic and downtempo kinds of acts; though the PA isn’t great, it’s more than adequate for this style of music. Shows here tend to be spectacularly intimate; the friendly bar staff and comfy leather couches make it well worth coming down. There’s a bit of stigma around this room in the Perth music scene as it’s notoriously difficult to pull a crowd to, but I hope that changes as it’s a great room with fantastic production. If you haven’t been(or have been avoiding it for a while), give it a chance, it may just convert you.

The Swan Hotel is one of the stalwarts of Perth’s local music scene, running regular nights showcasing Perth’s local talent. The Swan Hotel hosts local music events five nights a week — a rare dedication to the local music scene. The Swan Hotel is split into two halves. The top half carries the name the Swan Hotel — a decent-sized pub with a performance space at one end and seating on the other. Downstairs is the Swan Basement, which has its own performance space and bar. Some music events take advantage of both spaces of the Swan Hotel and hold two-stager events, while sometimes separate bands will book out separate areas. As a bar, the Swan Hotel is average. There is an okay range of beer, and typical pub grub. The Swan Hotel proper has a larger range of beer and liquor than the Basement, so if you are looking for a decent drink, upstairs is the better option. In terms of acoustics and performance space, the Basement is better, with a larger stage. The Swan Hotel is worth a visit to sample some of Perth’s music talent.
