Don’t think I need to write much about this place because anyone who’s been there knows how amazing it is, and anyone that hasn’t won’t truly appreciate it until they go for themselves. One of the most intimate and cosy places for a gig. Brilliant!

Although I doubt it’s not the kind of venue you’d be able to put a profitable show on in if you were a local muso, the Fly is a great place to see touring acts or large community events. Over the years I’ve seen a huge variety of shows in here from Augie March and Amanda Palmer through to a performance art gig of people looping old bits of film. It’s a great place for shows that draw a decent sized audience to still retain a feeling of intimacy; many players who gig at this room fall in love with it and it’s easy to see why. The sound is also very good, surprisingly for a what is basically a large tin shed. As an audience member, it’s pretty ideally located next to a large car park and if you find that you’ve had a bit too much to drink at a show, it’s close enough to the Cappuccino Strip that you can wait out your alcohol intake there or head up to Monument Hill to drunkenly admire the view. The bar here is a little pricey though. The side room here, The Fly Trap, is a great space but a little challenging to put a gig on in as there is no passing trade. If you’re putting on a show where you’re going to pull your own crowd anyway it’s not such a big deal, but if you’re aiming at the general public it’ll be a struggle to get them in, in my humble opinion. This is easily one of the best places to see touring bands in Perth.

Hands down the best live music venue in Perth. There’s nothing contrived or over the top about Fly By, its just like a big shed with a bar at the back. But boy are the acoustics great and it has the most tremendous hippy vibe. I have seen a bunch of gigs there from Boy and Bear to Birds of Tokyo and the performances are always great. Its spacious and fun without losing any of its intimacy. Drinks are cheap and the crowd is always chill — its everything a live music venue dreams of being.

Fly By Night is a reminder of all that is rich about Fremantle and even Perth at large. Its reputation in the community as a premier music venue, coupled with the largely local and national acts it programs gives it a distinctly Western Australian feel. Then there’s the dark and moody vibe of the place, the fairy-lights, the expansive audience area, and the giant moon face sculpture that has become somewhat of an iconic in the WA music scene. There are few places in Perth that hit the mark quite like Fly By. Some of my favourite gigs have taken places here, including The Panics, Lior and Paul Dempsey. The bar selection is tops, and includes cheap wine from the plastic cup which is always a win. There’s no pretence here; just a shared appreciation for quality music.

Welcome to the venue where all gigs should happen, come alive and be enjoyed. None of the fancy chrome pillars or strobe lighting on the bar. The tribute here is towards music, good music, not cocktails or handsome bar men(not that they’re not handsome its just not a priority. phew). A great venue all round.

Fly by Night is one of the best venues in Perth, it is like a huge warehouse. Just one massive room, a stage at one end and a bar at the other and seating and dancing in between the two. What more do you need? It has a great urban vibe, the furniture is very kitschy along with the rugs they warm up the concrete floors and match the exposed brick. The bar is pretty big running along the back wall and concert posters to the roof. If everyone is sitting waiting for an act the room can be a little awkward since there’s a large unused space in the middle, but once the music is cranking the space is good for dancing. The owners are real music lovers and book musicians, bands and artists they have a real appreciation for. It’s always worth having a look at what’s going on here, I mostly hope for something good to come up just so I can come and hang out, the venue is top notch.

The Fly By Night is pretty much just a big tin shed with a stage. Plastic patio chairs are arranged in lines in front of the stage for more formal events, when a dance floor is deemed inappropriate. It is such a fantastic space and always has a great vibe because a lot of the artists who play there are local or not too well known yet, so the audience is usually made up of pretty dedicated music fans. Years ago I was lucky enough to be blessed with the opportunity to buy tickets to see Bön Ivor before they hit the big time at the Fly By Night. The night of the gig was hot and sticky, especially in the shed. The band moved with grace from gentle love songs to shredding in the vein of metal. The atmosphere was palpable and there was literally not a dry eye in the house by the end of the performance, it was truly moving. It was one of my most favourite gigs of all time. If you have an opportunity to see a band at the Fly By Night, do it, it will be a truly wonderful experience.

The Fly By Night is a not-for-profit musicians club and venue dedicated to holding music events from a variety of artists — international, national and local artists alike. The outside of the Fly By Night is unobtrusive, but upon stepping through the doors and the foyer, the venue opens up and you are suddenly in the midst of a large performance space, with framed posters hanging from the walls. At one end of the venue is the stage, while on the other end is a large bar containing a good selection of beers, wines and spirits. There is limited seating towards the side of the venue, but in order to catch the best of the action on the stage, remaining standing is the best option. The acoustics of the Fly By Night are excellent, with all instruments clearly audible. The stage is elevated enough so that most positions in the audience would still be able to see the action. The Fly By Night is a great venue to watch some top local artists, and also artists who are off the beaten track. Keep an eye out for their up and coming acts on their website.
