I’ve never eaten Czech food before so I have no other reference standard to compare my experience to, but I loved cheeky Czech. The dumplings in particular. The meals have always been hearty and delicious, it’s byo but they don’t charge corkage so it’s win win. We’ve had the rabbit and beef goulash, both of which were really awesome. Prices were about as expected, around $ 20 for main, perhaps a little pricey compared to some of the other places on king street. Staff are helpful and it’s usually a pretty classy crowd in attendance, without the pretentious décor.

I need to find another spot for Czech. I love Czech food and the food we received did certainly remind me of being back in Czech but the service was terrible. Our orders were mixed up and most of the menu was sold out. Perhaps I came on a bad day but after the service mess I’d have thought we would have received some apology but no– just the cold shoulder. In an area with so much competition I’d expect more. The stars are for the decent priced and decent sized serves. That’s the best of it.

Small in size, but big in enthusiasm, Cheeky Czech offers a range of traditional Czech food on King Street. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you can choose from a huge range of modern Australian dishes like burgers, wraps, pastas, risottos and salads, but I’d recommend sticking to the traditional Czech menu. Try the beef stew slow-cooked with beer(yes, beer) and spices, and mop it all up with a side of bread. Alternatively, go the veal schnitzel with mash for a vast improvement on your typical pub schnitz. The restaurant’s also BYO, so bring a bottle to share.

The Cheeky Czech claims to offer a range of authentic and traditional Czech foods, but when I first looked at the menu I have to admit I didn’t see it: they offered burgers, wraps, pasta, risotto and salads and what, exactly, is Czech about that? A more careful read of the menu revealed a section of ‘Cheeky, but traditional Czech food’. That’s more like it, I thought to myself, reading a list that consisted of schnitzels, goulash and roast rabbit in a creamy sauce. I avoided the burgers, wraps and risottos because I’d come here to try Czech food, rather than dishes that I could pick up on any street corner in Sydney, and which, let’s face it, probably wouldn’t be that good anyway. So, instead I went for the pork schnitzel as the most typical Czech food they seemed to offer that wasn’t an entirely-inappropriate-for-summer beef goulash or a dish with rabbit(God only knows which hutch the rabbit was plucked from). The schnitzel was nice, I suppose, for a slab of meat fried in breadcrumbs, and quite good value($ 15). The staff were friendly and the place was clean. However, I really wasn’t overly impressed by the restaurant — I came here intrigued to taste some genuine Czech food, but all they really offer is heavily Australianised/Americanised fare that bears no resemblance what they claim.

When I saw Cheeky Czech in Newtown, I had to go and try it, I have never seen a Czech restaurant before so these guys have absolutely cornered the market. The establishment is not what you would possibly expect, even though they offer traditional Czech cuisine, they are not going for a traditional Czech décor, but rather a comfortable modern atmosphere. The menu is quite broad offering not only French food but all day breakfasts and café style options. Regarding the Czech cuisine, the top of the menu, I am guessing this is their signature dish(as it is also the most expensive) is Roast Rabbit in Creamy Vegetable sauce, if you are a rabbit fan I think you would be in for a treat with this one. I am not a rabbit fan, I find game a bit difficult to eat, so I ordered the Raznici, which is marinated chicken and speck(which is like bacon), with capsicum, mushrooms and onion all on skewers and served with potato pancakes and Mushroom and tartare sauce. So delicious, Cheeky Czech is a hit.
