Sugo has pretty good food, but the rest of the dining experience was lacking. The small plates are fun for sharing, and have a decent range. We had the smallest platter between us and six tapas-type things was a good entrée size for four people, and might even be enough if you’re not super hungry.(The arancini was quite popular at our table!) We had the gnocchi and it was quite tasty even if the sauce seemed to be quite uninteresting(a marinara-type one). The osso bucco also looked really nice. I did like their mango daquiri, which was an insanely large drink in comparison to their other cocktails. The concrete floors and walls and open space means it does get quite noisy, and they’re not really child-friendly, even if they offer high chairs. We had a toddler with us and halfway through our meal they moved her pram from out the front of the restaurant to this alley they have which is only accessible THROUGH the restaurant, so when we left we had to push a pram through a crowded restaurant! Not the greatest idea, really. Service was okay but pretty mediocre – our server was extremely slow; even when she brought out the cutlery and plates it wasn’t as if there was any interest or urgency in what she was doing. I would have liked to have seen a faster pace and maybe more interest in customer service.

I had a great lunch here today; very filling, very tasty and very not-too-expensive. We came on the suggestion of a family friend of ours. He’d been to Sugo recently and was singing its praises. We had been looking around for a nice place to have lunch and after a decent search, we found Sugo. Meals on the table included a couple flat bread, focaccia like thingies. I would just call them a focaccia but apparently that would be simply wrong of me. Who knows the difference? All I know is that it filled me up and was very satisfying. Our family friend had sound awesome smelling pasta and the garlic bread was also a good also quite nice. It wasn’t too expensive and the service was prompt, yet relaxed. We were in and out within the hour and drinks were on our table within minutes of coming in the front door. Sugo does a great meal.

Delicious food and great service! The prices are fair and there’s heaps of parking right around the corner. I highly recommend it! :-)

Sugo is something of a Melbourne institution but I must confess, in the words of Shania Twain, That Don’t Impress Me Much. Or rather, Sugo didn’t. Bland, un-yummy sauces? Not great wait staff? Too-high prices? Yep, Sugo boasts all of the above. Considering the amount of great Italian food on offer in Melbourne, there is no reason to accept any less than the best, and Sugo is NOT the best.
