Delicious coffee! The staff are always super friendly. It gets super busy on the weekends, simply reflecting how lovely the food, service, and coffee is.

Cute little place. I had a very tasty lunch special there. It has a Mediterranean flair to it with the small round tables outside and the décor inside. My triple shot latté was also good. Edit: came back for breakfast. Had to upgrade to 5*. DANG!

Poor service! Our waitress was more concerned with wiping down the tables around us than taking our order. Food is average for Glebe breakfast.

Small round tables don’t make you feel like it’s a stay, eat and relax over the newspaper/book type place, unfortunately. Our brunch outings are all about enjoying the food, the ambience and the weekend paper. Not good for anymore than groups of 2, round tables don’t push together to make a bigger area. Coffee average, and«large» equates to «standard size», unfortunately this seems to be the trend in a lot of cafes. happy to pay more for a large coffee, but not this one. Coffee came out as a flat white, not what I ordered. It took the waitress 2 conversations to get the order right to start with, so either the Barista got it wrong/can’t make a decent cup. of coffee, or she gave the wrong order. I suspect it is the Barista, as partners coffee was not a cappuccino, again more a flat white with a bit of froth. It’s all about the coffee when having Brunch, crappy coffee takes away from the whole enjoyment/satisfaction with your dining experience. Corn and Zucchini Fritters with Crispy Fried poached egg, bacon, avocado salsa and tomato relish. Bland, very small amount of salsa, and I didn’t notice any tomato relish. Crispy fried poached egg was the highlight, but It was more a boiled egg, Poached eggs are softer snd a bit runny. Needs something to bring all the elements together, maybe something saucy or a least a reasonable amount of the missing tomato relish. Fritters were too moist and fell apart when cut, again another reason for something to help it easier to eat a bit of every element together. Partner had the Baked Eggs wilt Lamb Sausages, chorizo meatballs, feta and spinach with sourdough. Staff need to issue a «the dish is very hot» warning when serving, partner burnt his fingers on the metal dish. A child would get a nasty burn. Tasty was his only other comment, do nothing really special. Would we come back, no, would we recommend, again a no. Too many negatives, nit enough positives. There are lots of other places that have nicer food/coffee and ambience.

LOVELOVELOVE! Phil is an excellent human. He goes to so much effort to remember and talk to the locals while also juggling so many orders and customers. The food never ceases to amaze. The Croque Monsier is a little piece of heart attack heaven on a plate whilst the lighter options are also delish. The coffee is always on point. Gold star for you guys.

Nicest café crew ever! They’re always so friendly even if they’re busy. If you go there enough they’ll give you the good olé’ neighbourhood customer service– remember your name, your order, etc. I’ll be honest I’ve only had their flat whites as far as coffee goes… but there’s a reason: the flat white is the best I’ve had in Sydney. One day I’ll venture out and get a different drink. Extra plus: they’ve recently added some new baked goods from Luxe bakery and another local bakery(I think). There’s a salted caramel fudge square that has changed my life(may be exaggerating but it’s unbelievably tasty). I even shared some with my co-workers and their minds were also blown away(doesn’t help with productivity eh). All in all, my favourite café in Sydney.

No where in Glebe has gotten a much of my brunch business as Astor. Between their fabulous haloumi stack and their superb eggs benedict they have me hooked. Throw in the adorable ambiance and quick service and I’m one happy customer. However, I will only be truly satisfied when I’m on first name basis with the owner so trying to duck in here as often as possible. PS. Their croque monsieur is also delicious.

Every time I walk home, I pass by one of my favorite cafes in the city: Astor Expresso. Housed in a striking exhibition of Art Deco architecture(formerly the Valhalla Cinema), this café brings memories of the sun and splendor of South Beach, where I would spend hours sipping on endless espressos, people watching and socializing, too. Fortunately for me, the better coffee can be found not in Florida, but around the corner of my apartment in Glebe. You can’t fake the talent necessary to brew the perfect cappuccino, and the truckloads of coffee I’ve had at Astor are evidence that the baristas at Astor know what they’re doing. They also offer a spectacular breakfast; standard, but well executed. Last time I was there for lunch, I got a spanakopita, which is a Greek filo pie filled with spinach and chunks of feta cheese. I’ve had plenty of spanakopita in the past, and this one was pretty good. It was accompanied by a heaping garden salad with cherry tomatoes, Greek olives, all doused with a light vinaigrette. A wholly vegetarian and satisfying meal. Service has been consistently friendly.

If you ever find yourself hungry in Glebe on a Sunday morning or early afternoon, there is no shortage of satisfactory brunch spots to select from… But however do you choose? You can go by proximity, or simply follow your nose. I tend to go with the sidewalk theory. Whichever has the largest amount of people waiting outside to get a table is likely the most delicious. This theory led me to Astor Espresso this morning. While the décor is basic and interior arrangement is commonplace, they turn out some fantastic morning eats and mean coffees. Feeling only a little puckish, I ordered their sourdough toast(which comes from nearby Sonoma Bakery) and homemade orange /lime marmalade. Hard to go wrong with an order like this, of course, but I did find myself with massive food envy when heaps of delicious dishes went by me. If I had been in my right mind, I would have no doubt ordered their special of pancakes with poached fruit.

A trip to Astor is necessary if only to taste the Haloumi Stack. With pesto, roasted tomato, two slabs of grilled haloumi, baby spinach and poached eggs atop toasted Sonoma sourdough, this is the best breakfast you can get in Glebe — and for only $ 12.50. The place was packed when we arrived, and we were lucky enough to catch a table just as a couple were leaving. We ordered our coffees and they arrived within a couple of minutes, both delicious and decorated with a perfect six leaf fern. The girls that worked there were super smiley for an early Saturday morning and the café’s easy breezy vibe transports you seaside(except I’m yet to taste coffee this good near Sydney’s beaches.) Food = fantastic. Coffee = fantastic. Service = fantastic. Value = fantastic. A smiley start to my Saturday.

Just below where the old Valhalla Cinema used to be on Glebe Point Road, sits a small, always busy, café called Astor. Every time I’ve wandered past, the café is thriving. People sitting outside, people on the inside, lines forming and folk milling about the display cases full of sandwiches. But today, today I went in. We took a seat outside and ordered some coffee. The young woman working there seemed to have a rapport with several of the customers seated on those dark wooded chairs. Always a good sign. The rapport, not the chairs. The coffee came and it was good, smooth, creamy, delicious. The noise of the busses motoring past on what could be described as a main road, made a word here or there go missing in the conversation, but despite a few looming clouds, it was a beautiful day and well worth sitting outside. The coffee was reasonably priced and the food that was passing us on the way to the various recipients looked absolutely amazing, but for now this rich creamy Soy Cappuccino would suffice.

Astor Espresso is part of the old Valhalla Cinema on Glebe Point Rd. Always crowded in the mornings and lunchtime, it has a buzz and the people serving and the owners seem to remember everybody — though how they do it I don’t know. They leave you feeling as if you’re a personal friend. I have asked many people and they all say the same thing. They serve wonderful coffee and a great breakfast. The food is simple eg: avocado on toast and bacon and egg rolls. The only thing I would warn you about is the seating outside: unfortunately the awaning doesn’t offer much protection from the sun so unless it is overcast, I would suggest finding a place inside — as minscule as it is.
