When I discovered that Hot Star Large Fried Chicken opened up a store in Melbourne this past week I got excited… those that have been to Taipei’s Shilin Night Market and have had a bite of their XL Chicken can attest that Hot Star is THE BOMB and is a must eat every time you visit the market.
Since they opened in Melbourne they would for sure be in Sydney, right?
Nope…not yet.
So I was feening… and a quick search lead me to Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks.
It sounded promising, especially cause it’s in Central’s brand spanking new shopping centre.
This shopping centre is still in the middle of construction yet it’s opened its doors to business already with a little over half of the shops open, which is good because no queues.
Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks sits on the food court on level 2, and offers a few of the more famous street snacks found at Shihlin Night Market.
I got the Happy Rice Box which comes with the fried chicken, rice, and tofu/​egg for $ 9.50. I also got another XL Chicken on the side for $ 7.50 (I’m fat, sue me.) They have signs saying you should try it uncut, but they cut it up for me anyways without asking. The chicken used for the Happy Rice Box is about half size of the XL chicken so keep that in mind.
If you’ve had the XL Chicken from Hot Star in Taipei and you’re expecting something similar you will be severely disappointed, this place can’t hold a candle to it. The chicken was OK but smaller, flatter, and drier. It’s like getting a knock off brand of Coca Cola, it’s not the same.
I probably won’t be back, so if you want Taiwanese fried chicken in the CBD go to Oden House instead. It won’t be as big, but it tastes heaps better.
Oh…and Hot Star Large Fried Chicken is coming to Sydney CBD in February 2014!

I found this place thanks to some well placed social media ads while searching for some food to eat. At that time it was about to close so I made a note of it to come back the next time I was in the area.
Tried the Happy Rice box which seemed like a good option because it contains a mixture of everything. It was pretty good, and I would definitely come back for it again if I’m in the area,
