I had my share of traditional Turkish food on this trip and wanted to try something close to home. Pizza. Toronto, is, without a doubt, a pizza city. I saw some really good reviews on this joint, so, I had to check it out. The wine and beer is vastly over priced for IST. Want good vino, go to Solera close by. The pizza? Three words to describe this place: The. Real. Deal.

February 2013: My first visit to 49 Cukurcuma. My husband and I stumbled upon this restaurant as it was just around the corner from our Airbnb. We had a super awesome visit. We thought the pizza was excellent and we loved the wine. Lots. Of. Wine. If I had reviewed this restaurant back in February 2013, I would have rated 49 Cukurcuma a full five stars. We loved 49 Cukurcuma so much that we made a reservation for dinner one night on our second trip to Istanbul, nearly two years later… May 2015: My second visit to 49 Cukurcuma. Nothing has changed with the space but the pizza really let us down this time. Average at best which means a solid three stars. Sorry Cukurcuma, I’m just not that into you [anymore].

This probably my favorite spot to have a nice dinner with friends. There is a very good selection of delicious pizzas. The ambiance is also very nice and cozy, and the servers are very friendly and kind.

After a few weeks of travel and intense dining, we really wanted a relaxed place to grab some good food and warm up in snowy Istanbul. We were not disappointed. They accommodated our reservation, held the table, which isn’t a given here, and we had a couple of glasses of wine, some tasty and spicey starters followed by really good pizza. Crust was crisp and noteworthy. I had the arugula and pesto, my husband the pepperoni. Both were equally good. Location is tough to find but its a funky little place with a really nice team of folks working and it was exactly what we were looking for.

Trendy restaurant away from the craziness of Istiklal Ave with a welcoming atmosphere. I went for the basics and ordered an arugula salad and a Margarita pizza. Both were ok. While the prosciutto, dried tomatoes and walnuts were a great addition to the arugula, the salad was drowned in vinegar and buried under a disproportionate amount of cheese. As for the pizza, it was plain and the sparsely sprinkled fresh basil, barely-there tomato sauce or not-no-spicy olive oil did not really stand a chance against all the cheese. The service was very friendly and I liked the atmosphere sitting in a comfy chair tucked away in a corner upstairs. This place offers breakfast and is a coffee hangout during the day. Prices are very reasonable.

Wanting a change from doners and kebabs after our 10 days in Turkey, this was the place. Menu consists of pizza; some may consider them of the«designer» sort, I prefer modern or updated. Between our family if 4, we shared: «pesto arugula /rocket», «seafood» and«prosciutto, roasted peppers & arugula». Yes you read correctly, in this Muslim country, they had ham and prosciutto on the menu! I was very surprised. A small salad and dessert selection, neither of which we, sampled. Pizzas were all very good, nice crust both crisp and chewy and generous toppings. The seafood was the winner, absolutely fresh ingredients. Everything was of good quality and service. Be prepared to pay a lot more than what you might normally expect for pizza. Three pizzas with 3 glasses of wine came to 130TL, the seafood pizza bumped the cost up, at 35TL, most were around 25TL. They also serve breakfast and I should mention the room is very warm & cozy with a «steam punk» feel. Very nice and recommended.
