Roter Stein

Went there for lunch with three co-​workers. Nice, rustic touch to the interior, a lot of wood and a nice, large regulars’ table with the eponymous red stone on top.
Lunch is moderately (averaging around 17 CHF, including salad/​soup, excluding beverages) and consists mostly of simple dishes (Gnocchi al Pomodoro, Pork Steak w/​Fries, Swiss Military Cervelat w/​Fries). Quality of food is okay for the price, but don’t expect any miracles. Gnocchi and accompanying sauce tasted store-​bought, but were okay. The pork steak was nicely done and arranged nicely on a square plate. Nice touch.
Service is friendly and fairly quick but lacks structure and organization. With the restaurant mostly empty, the waitress didn’t remember who ordered what and we had to send a starter back twice (first: wrong starter, then wrong sauce).
Ambiance, as initially described, is rustic and nice in general, but the coffee stains on the table cloth and the disturbing dangling extension cord dangling outside the window are hard to ignore.
Given the moderate price tag and the rustic atmosphere, Roter Stein is not a must-​see, but okay to have a quick lunch without spending a fortune.

Seit über 10 Jahren ist Bruno’s Quartierbeiz unser Stammlokal fürs Mittagessen, wenn keine Lust auf Kantine oder City besteht. Die Preise sind moderat, das Angebot bodenständig und immer solide Qualität. Meist hat es 3 Tagesmenus ab 16.50 und einige andere Vorschläge. In der «grossen» Karte hat es viel feines Fleisch, z.B. Schweinssteak «Haus-​Art» 28.50, Cordon-​Bleu 29.50, und das teuerste auf der Karte Rindsfilet 43.00. Es gibt auch ein Käse-​Fondue 24.00, ich hab dies aber schon lang nicht mehr bestellt, erinnere mich nicht speziell daran.
Das Rotweinangebot änderte sich über die Jahre kaum, der Conde de Valdemar Reserva oder ein Orangerie Crus Bourgeois waren oft die Wahl. Im Sommer der Zürcher Rosé im Steinkrug.
Wo Bruno, der Wirt, wirklich brilliert: Filetgulasch «Stroganoff» (war am 5.1.2011 Menu 3 = CHF 28.50 oder à la carte CHF 40), habe ich immer wieder gegessen und jedesmal war es ein Highflyer auch im Vergleich mit teureren Lokalen. Er kann wirklich gut kochen. Wenn Metzgete ist, sind seine Schlacht-​Plättli zum Bersten gefüllt und mega chüschtig (auf Vorbestellung).
Abends haben wir dort schon Apéros oder Jassabende organisiert. Es hat ein Sääli für ca 20 Personen, auf den Fotos nicht ersichtlich, und bei schönem Wetter hats 3 Tische vor dem Restaurant, eine Querstrasse, nicht zu fest befahren. Viele Stammgäste. Mittags wenn man früh geht ohne Reservation möglich. All in all waren wir noch nie enttäuscht bei Bruno!
