Coming from the states, having cake for breakfast was unusual but I was living every kids’ dream– eating dessert for breakfast. I had a ham and cheese croissant sandwich, a cup of english breakfast tea, and a generous slice of Sweden’s princess cake. My cousin tried their most famous tea with mixed fruit(kinda wished I got that one instead) and she shared the cake with me. Btw, the service was pretty decent. Wished she was more welcoming but she did answer all of our«common sense» questions. Lol we felt stupid afterwards. On a side note, my cousin and I went back to our hotel room that night and wished we bought a few more slices. It’s just the right amount of sweetness. There isn’t a leftover coating of sugar in your mouth, yah know? The fondant and buttercream is perfect and the cake so so moist. Ugh, wish I could have a whole cake right now.

This café restaurant is located in a stunning part of Gämla Stan. Offers lunch specials with free coffee/tea and bread with it. The food was very fresh, I got the salmon salad special, which included new potatoes and salad. I also got one of the beautiful variety of cakes, many gluten free! I got the baked cheesecake which was delicious! The décor is nice an quant with a comfortable seating. Overall I give this spot a 4 out of 5. Nice location, fresh food and good selection of treats. However I would have liked my food to have come with a better side than a very basic salad which consisted of 3 slices of cucumber, 2 bits of tomato and some shredded lettuce. My cheese cake was really good but the portion was quite small for the cost.

My husband and I visited for breakfast because we had read about gluten free options. I was concerned the only gluten free thing would be the cakes, but was pleasantly surprised. During breakfast they offer sandwiches which can be made gluten free and gluten free muesli. I opted for the sandwich and we got a piece of carrot cake to split. The sandwich bread was very dry, which ruined the enjoyment of the sandwich. The meat and cheese on it were good but the bread definitely lacked. Although I still appreciated having the option of a sandwich for breakfast. The carrot cake was very moist but I didn’t love it. I’m a big frosting person and this missed the mark for me. Both the cake and frosting were okay but nothing great.

Food was very good, nice quiet area. However, there system repeatedly rejected my credit card, very suspicious. This has not happened in a week, and didn’t happen when I went to get cash with the same card afterwards.

Was in Stockholm for four days, and dinner here was one of my fav food experiences in the city. It’s such a cute and cozy place, and the owner is super nice. Our dining table looked out the window onto the patio and the side streets of Gamla Stan. We had the meatballs(with mashed potatoes and lingonberries) and the skagentoast(like a shrimp salad on toast). Both were superb. The complimentary bread before the mains were sooo good. My friend has celiac, and our whole meal was gluten-free. They actually have a dedicated gluten-free bakery!

Amazing place! I found this cute place during ny first day in Stockholm and I have literally come back every day. I am gluten intolerant and this place is just PERFECT. They had all kind of gluten free cakes(and normal ones as well) and delicious gluten free sandwitches. The location is in d best square of d old part of d city. Without doubt… Go there and order a carrot cake(gluten free and delicious!!!) in d terrace.

Swedish meatballs were great, but if you come with someone else and it’s lunchtime, I would suggest you both share a few things – we shared the meatballs and a salad with salmon on top. The meatball dish just felt very heavy if I were to eat that whole thing myself – just meat and potatoes and a side of lingonberries. It’s good to get some vegetables in too, with the salad. :) Speaking of the salad, it was fresh and had lots of different ingredients, including two massive pieces of feta cheese. The only issue I had with the salad was that there was too much food stuffed into a small bowl. Everything was about to overflow, so we had to be very careful not to spill pieces of lettuce or melon on the table as we dug around to mix it up. We sat downstairs, which I’m sure is nice if your intention is to get away from it all and do some reading, but when you’re totally alone in the basement and everyone else seemed to be having a great time upstairs you feel like you’re missing something. Sadly we arrived *right* when the last upstairs table had been taken. They included free coffee/tea/water and self-serve bread and butter with the lunch meals, which was a great addition. The one thing I didn’t like about this place was that it felt a little like a cafeteria. You order from a chalkboard on the wall behind you and pay upfront, then you have a tray that you have to carry around, and you have to grab your own forks and knives and napkins. I’m sure if I came back, this would all go smoothly, but the cashier didn’t speak much English so we had to make a few trips to/from our table to make sure we had everything and they knew where to deliver our food.

I had dinner at this little place on my last night in Stockholm, I could not leave without trying some Swedish meatballs and a shrimp sandwich. I have to say that the shrimp sandwich did not really impress me. When I got there, there was a family of tourists sitting by the windows and no one else, I already knew what I was going to order. The shrimp sandwich came first, it wasn’t bad, just that it lacked a little bit of flavor, nevertheless I ate half and then half of it I took it back to my hotel room. The meatball plate came next and I have to say, they were pretty good, nice presentation, great mashed potatoes, they serve you a good portion of meatballs and of course the lingonberries. The ambiance was very relaxed, background music, candlelit tables and the service was good. The restaurant is tucked away somewhere in the in between a small tree plaza and it feels somewhat hidden and cozy. This place is perfect if you’re looking to have a quiet, cozy, romantic dinner or just bring family over and relax for a bit. The prices, like everywhere else in Stockholm, well appropriate for where you’re at.

If you get a chance, descend the staircase and have your food and coffee in the basement dining rooms. There are beautiful cellars underneath this building in Gamla Stan and I cannot recommend spending your meal in this spot more. So charming and intimate. I had the(shocking!) meatballs with mashed potato and ligonberries. It was delicious and the meatballs were juicy and had the perfect level of spice. The menu was in English and Swedish — which is helpful if you are from English speaking areas. Such a charming spot with white walls, warm wood floors and tables and sparking candlelight!

I decided to stop by this restaurant and have an early dinner. I’d read online that they catered for gluten free and I wasn’t disappointed. There were quite a number of options including gluten free garlic bread and gluten free bruschetta(of which I had both). Both were… excellent. Absolutely delicious. And the desserts — amazing. I definitely recommend checking out this place when you visit Stockholm!

Walked in blind to this delightful café and am glad I did. Had the BEST Kottbullar I ever had for lunch and that alone is something. The upstairs was too packed to squeeze my camera gear and me into the same space, so I ate down stairs in the cozy, stylish(and almost empty) lower dining room. Service was reasonably prompt, considering the lunch rush upstairs, and friendly. As I ate, I got to feel like a member of the staff, as I kept pointing to the bathroom for other guests who came downstairs with befuddled and concerned looks on their faces. Maybe a few more signs will fix this only small deficiency that I can see to this fine eatery.

Great option for gluten free vegetarian food. I was expecting it to be mediocre from reviews on here but my mom and I were pleasantly surprised. Other reviewers found it shabby but I think it’s gorgeous inside. To me it was clean and well presented and my picky mother was also happy with the choice. I’m a big fan of all the William Morris wallpaper upstairs and downstairs and the view onto the square when you sit at the window is priceless. Ate here for lunch and dinner on two different days. Lunch is more informal, with soups and gluten free sandwich and salad options. At dinner I got potato pancakes and lingonberries topped with vegetables. Mom loved her steak. I don’t know how friendly the place is for gluten free vegans. I didn’t get to try the cakes, but they did look nice. Service was pretty standard for a restaurant in Sweden. I would definitely go back. It’s not haute cuisine but you still get a nice meal in a pleasant surrounding in the middle of the Gamla Stan.

Fresh and delicious food with tons of gluten free and lactose free options. Reasonable prices for the old town, but be warned that the portions are kinda small. Very cute area and patio.

Was taken here for a meal by my parents-in-law. We had a dog with us, so we were seated in a special room. At first the room felt cozy, then it became obvious that the room was an afterthought. The room was hot, there is no air con and when asked if they could open the window they forgot. The food felt overpriced for what you got. You can do far better for the price. This feels more like a lunch place than somewhere to get a evening dinner. We had 3 waiters over the course of the evening. The one who seated us looked like she had a bad day. The second served us drinks. And the last didn’t open the window for us. I had the poached salmon. It tasted ok at best, but still, I expected better. My gf got a salad that was 200kr!!! The menu does the food more justice than it deserves. I won’t be going back again. They need to rethink the prices, give better waiter service and some way of cooling that offshoot of a dining room.

Great place to go if you have a dog in your company, or if you just want a coffee and some«fika». Dinner is another story however. Burger was severly dry and underdone. The waitresses was very confused when taking our orders and upon entering the restaurant the staff had misplaced our booking, and made us wait for fifteen minutes before finding a table for us. When we settled the bill the staff had miscalculated the cost for several drinks and made us pay more than what the bill said. Prices were decent but you can definitely find better places to dine in Gamla Stan. I won’t be going back to Under Kastanjen. /A local Stockholm-resident.

This is perfectly situated when strolling around the streets of the Old Town. From the outside it looks awesome but at least the bar section(to the left when entering) isn’t as pretty as the exterior. The selection of cookies, cakes and sweets to the coffee is ok and at 16.00 this place change from coffee bar to wine bar. I imagine this place shows its best side a sunny summerday at the patio.

So. When I looked into Stockholm, all the guides said like ooooooomg you haaaave to walk through gaaamla staaan, it’s sooooooo greeeat. And I’m like voooooommmmmmiiiiiiitttttt, Gamla Stan is so f*cking boring and touristy. Really it was the lowlight of my trip. But, this place was ok. I was only there for a drink so I can’t speak to the level of their food. But atmosphere was, it was fine. Nice small terrace and a noticeable reduction of tourists. Only two or three people snapping photos at any given moment. And there was a really funny guy sitting on the bench eating an imaginary sandwich for like 25 minutes.

Excellent place to hide away from the crowded main streets of gamla stan. Quaint, quiet and offers reasonably priced Swedish sweets and other meals. I tried their meatballs and it was delicious. I will never be able to go back to that bastardized version that IKEA peddles. The plate is small so you have room for dessert and that sublime Swedish latte. Perfect combo for a late lunch!

Haven’t spend all your money yet? Or the exchange rate of USD to SEK haven’t gotten you completely broke yet? You must try Under Kastanjen! The prices are reasonable and won’t completely rape you like the exchange rate. We arrived at 9pm and wanted a table. The staff said«we close at 10pm», we didn’t know if she wanted us to eat there or just telling us, but we were a bit confused. So we told her we’ll eat fast, then she seated us. Weird. You still have an hour left, do you close at 9 or 10? Anyway, free water! This place is one of the few places that will actually serve you water FORFREE. No charge! We drank 2 bottles because we were so excited and surprise, especially for Stockholm standards! The menu is mostly Swedish and decent prices. I got the Swedish meatballs and my BF got the steak. The Swedish meatballs were good and plentiful with a good sauce. I wish they put more of the sauce on the meatballs because after awhile it got a bit dry especially with the many meatballs they give you. My BF’s steak was delicious though. He loved it. Great prices for Stockholm, great food as well.

Under Kastanjen(Under the Chestnut Tree) is as if it is out of a storybook. Situated in the heart of Gamla Stan, this café serves delicious food, coffee and tea. Be sure to snag a table outside under the tree to enjoy your meal and do some people watching.
