We made a reservation for lunch at 1PM, and the restaurant was quite empty. Walking in, it’s like going into a house. The interior was decorated nicely, and there were candles on every table. The food and service here are great; our waitress was really nice. I decided to come here because of its Michelin Bib Gourmand status, and it didn’t disappoint at all. [FOOD] We each got a complimentary starter soup that was made of pumpkin, orange, and some other stuff in a chicken broth. It was pretty good and had a subtle tangy taste Yellow Split Pea Soup with Pancakes(Dish of the Day; Pancakes are Dessert): The soup was pretty good; it was light, and the peas gave some texture to it. The dish comes with a side of mustard(really good) and pork(super good). The two sides with the soup came together very well. It was a solid dish. The pancakes were also really good. You get 3 crêpe-like pancakes and a side of cream and lingonberry jam. The cream is very light and not sweet at all. The jam was a little tart but still good(honestly I liked eating it better by itself). And for only 135SEK, this dish was definitely worth it. Zorns Meatballs: Probably the most well-known dish here, I really enjoyed it. The meatballs are pretty perfect and flavorful. The pickles are light and sweet. The mashed potatoes are buttery and smooth. The lingonberries on the side give a small bit of sweetness to the dish. It was really good and worth the rave. Caramel Custard: This was pretty much just flan, but it was a sweet and light. I enjoyed it. [OVERALL] Come here for lunch. There’s pretty much no reason not to. The bill came out to 440SEK(~$ 52), and that’s pretty cheap for the type of restaurant and the amount of food we got. Tip: hot water is free! It was a great experience, and I would definitely come again if I ever get the chance.

Apparently this is Sweden’s oldest established restaurant, older than even the United States! Its a pretty fancy place, so were nothing nice and dressy. Fresh, warm bread was served at the beginning, which contains some delicious berries. We sampled the foie gras and steak tartar, before moving on to the main course. I had the salmon, and some other members had the fried pigion. I have to say, the fried pigeon was amazing! Knowing that there is one less pesky bird around, pooping everyone, made it taste ever better! Well… the pigeon was probably raised specifically for eating, but I still felt a sense of accomplishment. The night ended with desert, and I had the chocolate crème, which was very good as well.

Five star all the way. Extremely good service. Incredible Swedish Meatball dish. The bread was also very fresh. The SOS herring dish was worth a try also! Prices reasonable considering its location in Gamla Stan.

I have been to this old world establishment once. That being said i first sat at the bar where i had the pleasure, no, great pleasure of talking to locals and the bartender who was not only welcoming but down right helpful to first time Stockholm visitors. The food was prompt and capture what i feel is the food i would expect from a classic style mixed with modern technique. Without a doubt this was a restaurant i would visit again, in fact i plan to on my second trip to Stockholm next month.

I was told this is the oldest restaurant in Sweden. This is my second time here, and I was excited to be back. It has a very cool atmosphere and their food is delicious.

My Europe travels came at a slightly higher cost since I wanted to eat at a Michelin rated establishment in every country. So it was very unfortunate that I had to cancel out of the Frantzén and the second backup at Mathias Dahlgren because our flight times had changed, which sent me scurrying to the Michelin site to select another restaurant. Given that I would be exploring Gamla Stan, I was lucky to land last minute reservations at Den Gyldene Freden via the Bib Gourmand list. Den Gyldene Freden is located conveniently in the heart of Gamla Stan and is very accessible by foot. We were seated immediately given that I scheduled in right at the start of the lunch period. The restaurant is a nod to the past in keeping the structure and interior very much what it may have looked like 300 years ago. Add in the warm and comfortable wood furnishings and I felt right at home. The menu is reflective of Swedish cooking: simple, clean, and local produce and meats and fish are utilized extensively. I opted for the cabbage rolls while the other opted for the classic meatballs. We also ordered the smoked salmon as an appetizer, which came accompanied with copies slices of their local bread, which was amazing, by the way. Entrees ordered were Zorn’s meatballs and the stuffed Cabbage rolls. Both came accompanied with local produce which was incredibly fresh. The food was incredibly simple and good. It was an interesting way to experience local Swedish fare. I am appreciative of their clean approach to food: straightforward and no frills. Add in kind service and the rating of 5 stars is no contest. Thank you for our wonderful experience!

Nice restaurant overall! My reservation for two was early in the evening on a weekday, so the staff was very accommodating in letting us choose where to sit. Based on descriptions and photos of the place, we asked to be seated in the lower vault which is really cozy and lovely with a fireplace and a very rustic and historic feel — nice atmosphere! The staff was quite helpful and friendly, and the food — while quite tasty, was a little«sparse» for the price. Considering that it was very rich, though, it was still pretty filling. Gamla Stan is a rather touristy and expensive area to eat, so higher prices for smaller portions is a common phenomenon here. To be fair, I see that other reviewers have said the portions were generous, so maybe these two dishes are smaller than some of the others? I had the potato dumplings, and my friend had some sort of sausage and potato dish. It might have been a more nicely rounded meal if a side of greens had been included on the plate, but overall, it was a nice meal, and a gorgeous atmosphere.

We were anxious to try this restaurant due to the good reviews — we arrived after 9 pm on a Friday and were seated(after a long wait) in the upstairs room. A woman who seemed to be in charge sat us and immediately asked us what we wanted to drink — and seemed annoyed that we wanted to look at the wine list first. So we then sat for a full 15 minutes while(the person who we later llearned was our waiter) and several other wait staff swaramed around us — but never acknowledged we were even there. Our waiter finally appeared at our table — did not say helllo or introduce himself, but just stood there with his notebook and pen… we looked back at him and he finally said«ready?» The food was fine — but ours sat on a table near us for a considerable time as our waiter was engaged in chit chat with a bar patron. We had to ask for water refills and hail someone down to get a second glass of wine. Very poor service for a restaurant with this kind of reputation.

We stumbled upon this place walking around Gamla Stan. The menu looked traditional swedish and it was a beautiful old building where the restaurant has sat since the 17th century. The herrings were amazing. Lamb was excellent. Service was very good. Probably the best restaurant during my 5 day stay in Stockholm

The service is fantastic. The portions are huge. As Americans, we tried the herring starter. Our Swedish friends called us brave but it was delicious. Their house made boar sausage is wonderful. The meatballs are a Must order. It is a pricier place but you are paying for atmosphere. It is well worth a visit

Very romantic with dim lighting and cozy candle lit tables. We were lucky to get squeezed in without a reservation in a Friday. Would definitely recommend a reservation. Fantastic wine list. Wines and beers are recommended on the menu with entrees. I like that touch. My wife and I both had the Swedish meatballs with lingonberries and mashed potatoes. The meal was excellent.

My dear lovely restaurant the reason you are so short of a Michelin star is your completely careless staff. Since 17 century you were serving fine people of Stockholm with the food and wine and beer, Unfortunately nobody was able to recognize your achievements for years. So I understand that one day you decided to give up and just start serving tourists. Oh those poor poor tourists who don’t know anything better than inflight magazine recommendation. Mediocre food along with the terrible wait stuff completes a picture of you. It is 2014 and I ask you for a wifi password so can call my über after spending 3 hours and $ 450USD and I get completely ignorant annoyed answer with 3 networks available«I cannot help you». So I say I paid my money now you don’t give a f$ck about me, right? So f$ck you. Sincerely

Great food, almost 300 year old restaurant and the portions are perfect. I had the herring for appetizer, the lamb and sausage for main and the sorbet and ice cream for dessert. The Herring is so tender and juicy and the lamb is perfectly seared and lightly grilled. I usually don’t finish the full plate, but on this day I did. Usually after a full course, I feel stuffed, other than amazing quality in food, the most amazing part is the portion is perfect, it actually allows you to eat through the entire course without feeling stuffed. That to me is the best part, being able to walk out of the place without bending over and groaning. A must try if you are in Stockholm.

We came here so I could eat Rudolph… Great service, great ambiance, and the food was quite good, although a bit expensive. We started with the scallop and langoustine appetizer and it was ok, but nothing special. After we finished that, we dug into the herring salads they brought in small bowls and that was soooooooooooooo good! Definitely my favorite part of the meal! Each variation tasted fantastic and the cheese and 3 types of bread were a great compliment to the dish. mmmm… mmmm… mmm! I chose the reindeer fillet as my main as the sausage was partially pork(booo!), and it was super tender melting into my mouth. I had asked for pumpkin as my side and they brought mashed potatoes, which were just average. Overall, great experience!

We loved this place! We pay homage to the great Swedish Academy. This is a great place to dine. Great food, service, and we loved speaking with the locals. Lots of history in this 1722 tavern, where the Nobel Prize winners are determined. There is a «cave» like room near the bathrooms, which is pretty cool to see. I heard that upstairs has a beautiful room where big decisions are made. I had the artic char and Sav. Blanc from South Africa, which were both good. I also loved their bread too.

Good food, especially fish here is excellent as well as the rabbit&pork sausage(although a bit heavy). Deserts included many traditional Scandinavian dishes as strawberries and ice cream. Good coffee!

This is probably one of the best known restaurants in Stockholm for historical reasons(founded in 1722 and with famous artists having been there over the centuries). The milieu and ambience are amazing where you really can feel the centuries of history, expecting to see Carl Michael Bellman playing on his lute in a corner. The staff working were nice and attentive all the time. I was there with a larger group so we had had to preorder the food based on a couple of set menus. I had picked the main course with fish. I have to say that the food overall underwhelmed me, it definitely didn’t meet my expectations. My starter was a cold meat plate, Brawn of pork from«Rocklunda» with lemon poached apple & potato cream. Nice flavors, some classical holiday seasoning. My fish entre was arctic char(röding) with confetti on crab, roe, cabbage, potatoes & shellfish vinaigrette. The meal was quite tiny, and would have benefited with some potato/rice/polenta served with it. The«confetti» that supposedly included potatoes was very flat and unsubstantial besides the roe. This was just a true meh as I left hungry, and felt that this was not a place to write home about… The dessert, vanilla cooked pineapple with blood orange sorbet, almond & caramel cake, had a very nice combination of flavors!

Gehobene Küche in gehobener Umgebung. Über den Service kann ich nur sagen, mütterlich, freundlich mit Spaß an der Sache.

We were fortunate enough to be introduced to friends of a friend while we were in town, and they selected this marvelous venue for dinner. The fact that you receive a little booklet with detailed stories about the history of this restaurant should tip you off that you’re someplace special. Having done our research(thanks, Wikipedia) we knew that the Swedish Academy, who nominates the Nobel Prize in literature, dines here on Thursdays. We would like to think that we saw this lot, as there was a promising-looking herd heading to the cellar as we dined. That tidbit aside, the food and ambiance were both marvelous. It’s upscale but comfortable, not stuffy in the least. The food is pretty traditional, and three of us ended up with the Swedish meatballs. My husband got the lamb neck and absolutely raved about it. The server was really knowledgeable about the finer points of the food and drink, and the pacing of the meal was perfect. Definitely one of the more interesting venues in Stockholm.

My first visit was a long time ago, with my lovely dad and his friends… such lovely memories… around 15 years ago. It was a cold cold February night. We walked from the Grand Hotel, it was so nice to enter this albeit dark entrance, a respite from the cold… seeing ladies changing their boots into nice heels. I call still see in my mind’s eye all the dishes I ordered… the herring with little potatoes, the turbot!(OMG…was amazing)…actually…I shared my dad’s dessert with him. Fast forward to my last visit, with my husband. We had a great meal… I had a fish soup… more like a bouillabaisse. He had the herrings and moose(yikes I said, but it was actually really nice)…somehow, must have been the champagne, the rest is fuzzy… we celebrated his birthday… :) One day, we hope to go back there with our little girl…

Alle Gerichte klingen so anders. Nach einer früheren Esskultur. Rustikal.
