I’ve had the lunchtime £1.99 deal from here a few times and although the price is very low it is evident in the quality. I get the fish cake and chips because sausage or fish and chips is too greasy. The mushy peas taste of nothing. I appreciate you get what you pay for and this is a rock bottom price for average quality.

Considering that I eat here once a week(as a minimum!!!) I feel like I am able to write a well-balanced review of this Fish & Chip shop. The first thing to say is that since the major refurb over the summer, the shop looks fantastic! Ultra clean with brand-new fryers and a totally different vibe. There is now an eat-in area to compliment the take-away. The chip-shop runs a recession-beating lunch-time deal: £1.99 for Sausage & Chips, Fish & Chips or Fish Cake & Chips(with the option for Peas or Curry!). I have no idea how they manage to make money on this deal. The chips vary from perfect(and I mean perfect) to slightly greasy. When the fryers were brand new it was more likely to get greasy but in the last few months it seems like the staff have gotten to grips with them. The batter on the fish and sausage is lovely and crispy. The peas are adequate whilst the curry sauce can be hit or near-hit. All in all this is an above-average Chippie and the price and quality far outstrip any other in the area.

Staff are rude and unhelpful. Food here used to be nice but seems now to of hone down hill and prices have gone up. Avoid!!!

Why do so many traditional Fish and Chip shops still close on Sundays? Yes, I’m sure the staff work hard and need a day off too. Do they really need their rest as much as England needs access to its favourite dish seven days a week? I think not. Luckily, the Whitehouse Common Fish Bar agrees with me, opening for four precious hours on a Sunday evening between 5.00pm and 9.00pm. Their accessibility is matched by some pretty decent chips. Last Sunday, we both had cod and chips just arriving in time to take advantage of the Sunday opening. The chips were well-cooked and nicely seasoned with salt. I have to be in the mood for vinegar. The fish batter was golden and crispy, harbouring white tender cod at its absolute best. Yes, there’s more to the menu than the classics but some days, and especially Sundays, you just want things to be the way they should be…

The take away is always busy because the food’s so good — we’ve been going there for many years, it’s the best chippy in the area
