Well its a large cold building that again has had the guts ripped out to have one open plan ground floor. very popular a few interesting real ales available. would be OK as a local but for me would not be a must visit pub on the national scene.

A decent historic pub with a few, for the most part predictable, real ales. They have bar billiards. and a bit of a garden. Pretty decent.

Nice traditional pub. Football on but not lary. Nice staff and good atmosphere. Good pint of Tribute. Nice old school pub and looks like it has quite a few nights of entertainment. Could well be my new local.

One of my favourite pubs in St Albans. It’s not a looker, in desperate need of a refurb but its got character. Our group of friends normally gather here for pre-Christmas drinks, play board games(making up the rules as we go because half of the board pieces are missing) and get merry :) The smoking area is small, dark and horrible, toilets look old and fragile, leather sofas are ripped and smell of god knows what… and yet I still love this place! A very Christmassy pub, decent pub grub(but don’t expect much), friendly staff. p. s. And its got billiards! :)

A lovely old bar with character that is much bigger on the inside than it looks! We had booked a room above for bed and breakfast and this was a really good size, good price, nice comfy bed with flat screen television and fridge — all good, now the bad! The room shares a shower room with another room, but as this was unoccupied we had it to ourselves — a bonus or so we thought. On the morning I went to go for a shower to find the door locked and someone who lived above the pub had come across to use the toilet! And to not be too graphic an open window could not cope alone with the stench that was left for me to have a shower with — surely they have their own bathroom in their accommodation? Breakfast is cereal with milk and juice provided in the fridge. I had some cornflakes while the kettle boiled and when added to the milk it curdled! Despite all this friends and family had come over to meet us in the pub for Sunday lunch — there were 6 of us and 5 ordered the beef and 1 the lamb. The lamb was lovely by all accounts but no-one could eat the beef — far too old, grisly and tough — and so we complained picked up our stuff and left to eat elsewhere. This is such a shame as there was such potential for this to be a great weekend. We will be regular visitors to St Albans now that family have moved to the area but will not be going into the Goat Inn again, despite its proximity.

A traditional pub with great food menu, traditional beers and live music. Nice, friendly atmosphere and good quiz on a Sunday night.

A very historic building just outside the center of the city this pub has a few real ales and a great food menu. In the evening it is quite a bustling, friendly bar, large and always pretty good for finding somewhere to sit. It has a small garden for smokers and they have a variety of board games to play when things are queit. This is a good place to meet up with a group of friends and is handy for the restaurants in the center of town.

I went to this pub for New Years last year, and I was really pleasantly surprised. It was chosen by a friend, and I had my reservations, but we had a wonderful time. It is a typical old style pub, and you’ll always find an older man sipping his pint in the corner, but its very relaxed and cosy. The prices are pretty reasonable, and they serve a good selection of beers and spirits. They have a selection of board games in the corner for those quiet Sunday afternoons and the food they serve there is really tasty.

Nice little pub to relax after a long day’s work. They serve proper ales and the food is cheap and plentiful. They somewhat retained the authentic feel of it and resisted the latest trend for the hip modern gastro-pub experience. They used to rent out rooms for 35GBP a night incl. breakfast, as well.

My Dad used to bring me here when I was a little’un after swimming(to dry me out by the open fire) and other than it getting a bit tatty round the edges it hasn’t changed much. Down yet another historical back street just off the main high street in St Albans, dating back to the 15th Century this pub used to serve as a Coaching Inn and if local knowledge is to serve correct — a Brothel! They have a decent selection of real draft ales, and serve the usual pub fare — steak and kidney pie, ploughman’s, cod and chips, etc — in the family friendly restaurant area at the back. This is the sort of pub you could snuggle up in and get all cosy on a rainy day. Perfect for visiting after walking around the grounds of the Cathedral. There are lots of books, historical photos of Hertfordshire and a huge selection of games to whittle away your time on a Sunday afternoon.
