Aquatec

The aquatec is actually a really well-​equipped gym. The gym itself is in the same layout as the old ice rink, and it works. I was a member here for a while, so let me explain, for a student it is only £15 a month and you can with that use any of the North Lanarkshire gyms. When you join you are given an induction with a personal trainer, who writes you a workout card to your specific needs and goals.
You can use the gym at any time with a membership and get a place on any of the classes, spin, body pump, you name it, its free. You will need to book the week before though becasue they get filled up quite quick.
If you do not want to to join as a member I think the original induction is around £8, and the n subsequent visits are maybe £3 something. So after a few visits you are better just becoming a member.

Yes, the Aquatec truly is a institution in Motherwell.
It has went from the hideous and grubby to the new and shiny quite a few times, and it’s status at the moment is ‘not too bad’.
I absolutely adore the smell of chlorine and wall of hot air as soon as you step in the door, it really takes me back to my childhood when coming here was a real treat. As i got older, they put on ‘Pool Parties’ for 10 and 11 year olds, and we would spend all day at school on a Friday deciding which swimsuit would match our Barbie armbands better. These were big decisions you know.
Nowadays, the swimming pool looks, to my 22 year old eyes, a lot like a huge puddle. You cannot swim in there at all, so it’s more of a kiddies play pool with a flume, baby paddling pool and a couple of Jacuzzis for the older ladies.
What used to be the Ice Rink (which i never mastered, ever) is now a top of the range Gym, one of the best, if not thee best in Lanarkshire. Fully equipped, with classes running throughout the week, this is a really busy gym after working hours. I went to a Spin class one night and I honestly almost died. True story.
They also have a sauna and steam room, although rolling around in the good people of Motherwell’s sweat was never high up on my agenda.
All in all, worth a wee visit, at around 16.00 for a monthly membership if you are a student (includes access to all North Lanarkshire leisure buildings)

This place has been in Motherwell since I was born. It’s hard to imagine Motherwell without it.
It used to be a swimming pool/​ice rink combo with many a Sunday afternoon spent here skating when I was younger. The ice rink has since been done away with and replaced with a really good gym, probably the biggest and best in North Lanarkshire.
The swimming pool is a fun pool, barely a metre deep and only good for splishy splashy times, not a proper swim.
They have a good health suite with a sauna and steam room where, despite the signs about NOT shaving, there are always hairy old men shaving.
The pool is rarely busy aside from summer time when kids under 16 can swim free when it is bedlam.
The gym, as I said, is ace. There is at least two of everything so you are guaranteed to get a shot of whatever it is you are wanting to use, with some really modern equipment. The ‘gym music’ can be really loud which drowns out my own work out playlists much to my annoyance, but other than that, there isn’t much to fault the place.
A busy place.

This pool is absolutely freezing every time I go but it doesn’t stop the kids from enjoying it. My children go swimming throughout the holidays when its free but it works out rather expensive to take 4 out with the holidays. It has a big flume again the queues can be rather long but go down rather quickly. It has a fantastic gym where many classes are held and a fantastic health suite. No café but a few vending machines are available in the foyer. Showers are always lovely and warm and the pools always well supervised. Staff are all very efficient in there work and are pleasant

always take my kids here at summer for the free swim as it keeps them amused and out of trouble, gets busy during school holidays, pool isnt deep about 4 – 5 feet at deepest part, has a flume for kids and big kids to use, small toddlers pool and a jacuzzi which holds about 10 people at a time. it has a waiting are were you can keep an eye on your kids if you arent in pool, this area also has a tiny soft play area for toddlers with a ball pit. there is a large gym which you can join for £15 a month (i think), no café but a few vending machines in reception area as you enter, loads of lockers and changing rooms, although i only saw a couple of family rooms so you might need to wait a few minutes for one
